Winter
The temperature has dropped, the days are noticeably shorter and suddenly salad does not seem like such an appealing lunch option – bring on the soups, I say.
It may surprise you to hear that not only are soups a great option nutritionally but certain types of soup have also been proven to help support weight loss, so let’s get that soup pot out and get chopping!
Soup, particularly vegetable based soups are a great option nutritionally as they combine a high nutrient density with a low energy density and this means that we get lots of key nutrients including vitamins and minerals for relatively few calories.

The Australian ski season starts today. And leaving aside the very real possibility that that I may well be a wanker for all kinds of other reasons, the point here is that I am not automatically a wanker because I choose to indulge in snow sports.

Nor are at least one million other Australians who visit our snowfields annually. Yet we’re all tarred with the same brush of the wealthy Toorak and Vaucluse minority who flit and flounce about in poncy overseas resorts like Aspen each year.
Many people don’t know that snow sports have been practised in Australia by ordinary Australians for 150 years. In 1861, a bunch of gold miners in Kiandra, NSW, formed what is widely believed to be the world’s first ski club. The above pic shows The Kiandra Snowshoe club, as they were quaintly called, at the turn of the 20th century.

Kassanra and uni-educated snow bum, the way you two are carrying on makes all skiers & snowboarders look like wankers. Both are really fun sports and regardless of which one you choose it is only those too inexperienced for the runs they go on who end up pushing too much… Read more »

It’s bloody cold and often wet by 11pm on a Saturday night in the eastern states at the moment.

Having walked down Rundle St, Adelaide and South Bank, Melbourne at this hour in the past couple of weeks, I have one burning question: “Why are all the pretty young girls freezing their bits off?”
Seriously, jackets seem to be very much out of style on four degree nights right now – and short, sleeveless, bare skin is in, both in and out of the pubs and clubs. It’s enough to make a past-it, pregnant, thirty-something like me feel slightly hypothermic.
