Vietnam

It doesn’t matter if it’s making babies as a commercial surrogate or a10-year-old kid stitching together basketball shoes in Vietnam, exploitation in any commercial transaction is wrong and should be punished.

But you don’t ban basketball shoes. And I don’t understand why Australians have been banned from using commercial surrogates overseas.

Last year NSW passed its Surrogacy Act which, when it comes into effect, will make pursuing commercial surrogacy overseas a criminal act.

I’ve not read all of the comments following this article (except for the first few comments made by Eric: creepy and insensitive much?) , but I’m going to throw my two cents in anyway: criminalizing foreign surrogacy (in my opinion) is a step in a good direction. Regardless of ethical… Read more »

usually with surrogacy the other person’s womb is merely an oven for it to cook in, when you give up your children for adoption you don’t get a say in how they are raised, why should you when you don’t share DNA with the child? Read more »

I think the future of Asia is in the ‘consortium’ : a group of nations - Vietnam, Thailand, Nth and Sth Korea etc, - that are able to function as an economic and social unit. Kim Jong Il should be trying for this, rather than forcing through any sort of… Read more »

Thieu was the President of South Vietnam. He resigned some time after the communist North Vietnamese broke the peace treaty they had signed 1973, and successfully invaded the South. Lacking American support, the South Vietnamese government collapsed. The communist victory led to the mass murder of millions of people. http://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/DBG.TAB11.2.GIF… Read more »

Khe Sanh was a purely American/vietnamese experience - 6000 marines and not one Australian. Anyone know why Cold Chisel chose that name for their song about an Australian veteran? Maybe “I left my heart to the sappers round Nui Dat” didn’t sound right. Read more »

The fact of John McCain’s incarcaration may well have turned American voters off his candidacy. Americans, like Aussies, value experience and adventure, but not at the extreme, lest it turn us anti-suburban. President Obama is waiting.
