Simon Sheikh
There is fresh evidence Australians are dividing between Labor and the Liberals and that the shift to the political poles is leaving the Greens adrift and losing much of the electoral ballast accumulated over the past five years.

Voting last weekend in the Australian Capital Territory has followed the broad trend set in recent NSW local government elections and recorded in opinion polling.
It could be that the latest third-party bloc, balance of power heirs to the Australian Democrats, is being stranded with reduced influence. Which additionally could mean that in the history of really unfortunate political timing there might be a footnote, at least, for activist Simon Sheikh who is setting out to enter Parliament.

In the words of Bob Marley, GetUp! – stand up.

GetUp! should stand up and tell Australians who they really are. Are they an activist organisation with a certain political leaning? Are they a pseudo political party aligned with the Greens and Labor? Are they truly independent in their views or do they take advice from particular political identities?
For a long time GetUp! has stood upon the mountain of moral superiority and preached to us ordinary ignorant slobs on everything from economic fairness and workplace relations to the price of petrol and the plight of battery hens.

Sophie Mirabella is copping it this morning because unlike Greg Combet (Clark Kent anybody?) she didn’t rush to the aid of Simon Sheikh when he collapsed next to her on the Q and A desk last night.

Visually it didn’t look great. As the Get Up! director slumped forward unconscious the Shadow Industry Minister appeared to recoil. It was certainly an odd moment. Climate Change Minister Combet, who was mid-sentence, expressed the confusion everyone would have felt when Sheikh (who is ok, thankfully) first connected head with desk. “I’m not quite sure what Simon’s doing there. Is he okay? I think… he’s not okay. Simon is not okay,” Combet said, before going to Sheikh’s aid.
Mirabella’s inaction was for a just a few short seconds, but from the reaction you would think the woman had poisoned the political activist’s glass of water.
