Paid Parental Leave

When Tony Abbott last month stomped around a military base in Afghanistan in bomb disposal kit he looked more like an over-cautious beekeeper than a man of daring deeds.

First big new idea for the Action Man: better armour

But Abbott cannot be underrated for political boldness and dismissal of caution. His Action Man style has for the past 12 months allowed the Gillard government little time for rest or applause.

But now Tony Abbott is foreshadowing a switch from the relentless and restless tactics to a more settled period of policy creation. Twice in the past seven days he has pointed to extra effort in the contest of policy ideas, while still harassing the Government.

The health and welfare of our young people has been at the centre of many policy announcements made so far this election.

Childcare centres and chubby babies provide popular photo opportunities for campaigning politicians, and both parties are arguing over who’s paid parental leave scheme is best.

Focusing on our young people is important: they are the future of our nation, the next pillars of our community; but is it the role of government to tell us how to raise our children?

John A Neve, that quote of Melanie’s came word for word from the above article that some of us just read. I’ll say ‘some’ as since you didn’t recognise it, I’ll guess you didn’t. Though I should point out that that is conjecture. Read more »

On Tuesday this week, 25,000 Australians delivered a clear message straight to the people who represent them in the nation’s Parliament.

Signing a national petition, nurses, teachers, hospitality and construction workers, uni students, school kids, their mums and dads, their grandparents demanded that their elected representatives stand up and vote for the Rudd Government’s national paid parental leave scheme.

After waiting decades, working families are set to be the big winners when the Government delivers Australia’s first paid parental leave scheme and Australia finally catches up with the rest of the developed world on this vital reform.

...and it would also be the weathiest families in Australia who, during the 05-06 FY, gleefully grabbed Howard-Costello’s handouts to the tune of $100 million.
