Open Thread

This is the week that Craig Thomson defended himself in Parliament, Schapelle Corby got clemency and we discovered Aussies spend more time drinking booze than doing housework.

Mark Zuckerberg got married, Helen Marston claimed animal experiments wouldn’t help her fight cancer. Movies taught us that NSW would probably win the State of Origin. Pity it didn’t work out that way. Oh, and here at Punch headquarters all the Tim Tams got eaten.

Football happened last night.

The Punch's crack graphic design team slaved away to produce this work of art

One colour reigned supreme. Or there was a draw. This open thread was written well before the game. Anyway, last night was effectively another epic clash in the eternal war between the primary colours blue and red. (Maroon, pah, it’s a variation of red). A war that has played out on several fronts: between Republicans and Democrats, Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue, Manchester United and Manchester City.

And more. What’s your favourite blue versus red rivalry? And what other colourful things are happening in your lives?

What’s the worst injury you’ve sustained on a holiday? One UK backpacker has been awarded $44k by a Brisbane court after a bouncer broke his leg in an “incident”.

In a written judgment published late on Friday, Judge David Andrews found that the force used by the bouncer “was more than was reasonably necessary”. Fair or not fair? You decide.

One of the hottest debates at the Madrid tennis Masters tournament is over the colour, texture and feel of the clay beneath players’ feet.

BREAKING NEWS: Man asks to be taxed! Stephen King is his name and writing scary books (and getting paid squillions to do so) is his game.

In a recent article he wrote for The Daily Beast titled “Tax Me, for F@%&’s Sake!” King has demanded that super rich people like himself be asked to pay more tax, or contribute in other ways to make American society more equitable. Not doing so, he says, will ensure the country faces an apocalyptic scenario of its own making.

Carrie’s situation… how most millionaires would probably react if told to pay more tax.

It’s a noble cause. But at the end of the day only time will tell. As King himself put it: “Rich people like to keep their dough”.

Tucked in amid the weekend’s exciting political news was this little nugget: People are suing Nutella because they believed it was a “nutritious treat”.

Full of energy. Energy meaning calories. Pic: AFP Photo

People were fooled by marketing to believe that chocolatey, hazelnutty Nutella would “nourish their children with whole grains” as “part of a balanced meal”.

It’s more than half sugar, and about a third is fat, which doesn’t leave all that much room for nutrition. But some people were fooled and now they’re up for massive payouts of up to $20. Which doesn’t really seem worth it. What do you think, Punchers? Is litigiousness spreading like fatty goodness in Australia, too? And what else is on your mind?

What in the world could these to have to say to each other? Or perhaps that’s the point. Buddhists are very forgiving.

Dalai Lama: If only I could understand what George is saying

According to The Daily Telegraph, the Tibetan leader told American news network CNN while he did not admire all of Bush’s Middle East policies, overall he found him a nice man.

“I love President Bush ... as a human being. Not as a president of America. Some of his policies may not be very successful. But as a person, as a human being, very nice person. I love him.”

Would you fly on this plane? The good-as-new Nancy Bird-Walton touched down in Sydney yesterday, ready once again to ferry passengers around the world. Qantas boss Alan Joyce reckons people will have no worries about hopping onboard this particular flying kangaroo. Do you share his optimism?

Pffft, it's just a flesh wound

There are two ways of looking at this. The first is that this was a new plane with a minor fault (a faulty oil pipe) which nearly caused a major crash. Not good. Alternatively, you could argue that it’s pretty damn amazing that the plane was able to land considering it suffered a pierced wing, punctured fuel tanks and wiring and hydraulics damage.

What say you about this and all other things that happened on the weekend? Anything else grabbed your attention?

Here are the top six things we learned on The Punch this week:

Ho, hum. The view from Punch HQ for most of this week. Well, almost the view.

- Charles Darwin was racist

- The NBN is both complex and simple

- Large coffees make us fat

- Gun culture is the last thing we need in Australia

- Life in 2080 is looking pretty wacky

- And that thing called “the sisterhood”? It doesn’t really exist.

Google fears for the internet’s future.

Don't be evil: Sergey Brin, left, is concerned. Picture: AFP

The co-founder of Google, Sergey Brin, says there’s a lot to be lost in the “walling off” of the internet by companies like Apple and Facebook. Governments in China and Iran have also succeeded in putting the internet “genie back into the bottle”.

“Very powerful forces… have lined up against the open internet on all sides and around the world,” he told The Guardian. “I am more worried than I have been in the past. It’s scary.”

“Moving forward” has a different meaning in North Korea.

“Let us move forward to final victory,” Kim Jong-un, the son and successor of Kim Jong-il, urged North Koreans assembled at a military parade in Pyongang at the weekend.

Kim Jong-un rocketed to the top of communist food chain in North Korea

Whatever that means. Jong-un’s speech came after the Obama Administration suspended a food aid agreement that would have helped alleviate the famine that grips the country - which they did in response to the hermit state’s (failed) missile launch last week. The aid would have come in exchange for North Korea halting its missile testing and uranium enrichment programs, and allowing international monitoring of nuclear sites.

One in three children is malnourished in North Korea, according to the World Food Program. This raises an interesting question. Should food be used as a foreign policy tool? Shouldn’t food be distributed to needy innocents regardless of what regime they live under?

What do you reckon? And what else is on your mind today?

Commenting on our One Direction piece yesterday, fairsfair pointed us in a different direction: a cover of their song What Makes You Beautiful that’s actually not too bad.

The goal is twofold: to bring a powerful new enrichment activity to the orangutans and to get zoo visitors engaged in the fight to protect an endangered species. True story. Yesterday’s open thread had some cute chicks. Today we’ve got super-sized chicks. Meet Yutyrannus huali - the name means ‘beautiful feathered tyrant’ and it’s a newly discovered species of dinosaur, and the biggest feathered animal known to science.

Phwoar, check out Big Bird! Pic: Dr Brian Choo

The adult Yut would have weighed in at 1400kg. The discovery has been published today in Nature. The Advertiser‘s science reporter Clare Peddie writes that lead author Professor Xu Xing, from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing said the feathers were “simple filaments”.

“They were more like the fuzzy down of a modern baby chick than the stiff plumes of an adult bird,” he said.

Australian musician Jimmy Little died yesterday morning, aged 75.

Performing at his last gig. Picture: Anna Warr

Little was best known for hits Royal Telephone, Danny Boy, Baby Blue and One Road. Royal Telephone, released in 1963, reached number 1 in Sydney and Adelaide, and #3 in Melbourne.

A groundbreaking indigenous artist who recorded 34 albums, Little started a foundation sharing his name in 2006 dedicated to increasing the life expectancy of indigenous Australians in rural Australia. You can learn how to donate to the foundation here.

The music legend had been battling illness for some time. His wife passed away last year. Vale, the both of them.

Little talked about his youth with writer Benjamin Law in this insightful interview last year. He said:

You have to know yourself, trust yourself, and even love yourself to a point. Be yourself and keep trudging on down that path, because we’re all here in life for a reason.

Do you have any memories of Mr Little? What else is on your mind today?

Disclaimer: Today’s open thread begins with an apology to those in the less fortunate states because Sydney had some glorious weather this weekend. A little more ‘get outside and play in the sunshine’, than ‘stay at home and read’.

What did you read this weekend?

Saying that this Time Magazine article is worth a ponder. A recent study by a British social networking site has found that the average person doesn’t find true happiness until they reach the tender age of 33.

Same goes for this fascinating and tabloidy tale from the UK’s Daily Mail (otherwise known as THE bible of all tabloidy tales). It’s a story about seven year old Kian and Remee, twin girls who were born a minute apart. Only Kian is black and Remee is white.

For something a little more high-brow, try this excellent piece from James Risen of The New York Times about the clash between the CIA and the White House in regard to their dealings with Iran.

Now back to you. What got your toes curling in the reading department this weekend?

How often in life do you get something for nothing? Today, The Punch offers you just that.

If no one else joins, I'll win. Now, none of you want that, do you?

All you have to do is join our AFL footy tipping and you’ll already have one game right! See, the season started with one match last weekend when the Swans beat the Giants. If you ever forget to tip (or haven’t joined yet), you automatically get the “away” team, which means you got the Swans.

So go to supertipping.heraldsun.com.au, join up and type in code number 278034. Let’s see if we can get more than the 29 in our NRL tipping. And remember, the winner gets to write a Punch column about any topic they choose, subject of course to a bit of editing at our end. Anything else got you feverishly excited today?

Apple’s claims that its new iPad has “4G” technology has got it in trouble with the competition watchdog, the ACCC.

Apparently their displays are also made out of a crucial component of a human eye

The electricity was crackling in the comments section this week after a Brazilian student died after being Tasered by the NSW Police Force. Tory Shepherd kicked off the discussion asking why Tasers are still classified as a “non-lethal” weapon. A serving NSW police officer explained why Tasers are an important and mostly safe police tool.

It wasn’t a good week in the “crazy antics” department. A mining billionaire gave conspiracy theories a bad name by accusing the Greens of being funded by the US Central Intelligence Agency. The man behind the preachy Kony videos had a naked meltdown, news.com.au reporter Claire Connelly writing that it was really all our fault. Germaine Greer launched a bizarre and germane smear on the Prime Minister’s rear.

In the ideas department, Jonathan Sobels suggested mining companies should endow universities. The NRL should dump cheerleaders. Anthony Sharwood’s thirst wasn’t quenched by modern day beer ads. L-platers need emotional training, not just driving tutoring, Lucy Kippist wrote. McDonalds strained our cardiovascular systems by linking up with Krispy Kremes. And I took us into the Sydney shop that your GPS and Google Maps have pushed out of business.

On the news-front, nobody could excuse the murders of Afghan civilians by a US soldier. Vale Jim Stynes. The Queensland State Election will be held tomorrow. An opinion poll found yesterday that Campbell Newman, the candidate for Premier that the LNP are trying to install in the seat of Ashgrove, is on track to win the seat. The party is predicted to sweep State Parliament. But who will you be voting for and why, Queenslander Punchers?

Definitely a meaty week to commemorate National Bacon Week. It’s Friday. What’s on your mind?

Any day now, the bees will take over the world. You might have thought their numbers were dwindling, which would mean plants wouldn’t be pollinated, which in turn would mean we’d all die. And that might indeed happen down the track.

Humanity, meet your future. Pic: AP

But before it does, the bees will heat us with their brains and kill us all. If they so choose. Research out this week shows just how bees overwhelm enemies like hornets by swarming all over them and heating them till they die with brain power alone. It’s scary stuff.

So who’s for a honey sandwich? While we make one for you, tell us what’s on your mind.

Mmmmmm, cheesy

Joseph Kony. Remember that guy? We started the week with a piece from SBS journo Aaron Lewis on how he joined the hunt for the Ugandan warlord. Closer to home, Bob Katter set off a furore. Meanwhile, in something you’re sure to bring up at the pub, Sam Canavan explained why the camp lisp exists.

1400 years is no excuse for sexism, Penbo wrote about Islam. Lucy laid out how the Rinehart family were breaking the rules every family have. Ant Sharwood discovered that a lot of people actually like Eddie McGuire (who knew?). The world was a stage for Bobby J. Carr. And I explained why the birds and the bees is a stupidly outdated concept.

Is this the world’s most annoying social networking website?

No I do NOT want to connect with you

I reckon so. Like many Australians, I’ve got an account on LinkedIn, the website you can chuck your resume up on and link up with people you’ve worked with so they can self-consciously compare their own resumes against yours—and maybe recommend you to an employer.

However, I’m not entirely sure how it complies with the Spam Act considering the virtual tsunami of emails it inflicts upon everybody you’ve emailed in your life asking if you’d like to “connect” with them.

If you’ve used it, have you found it useful? I’m betting that there is a strong chance that if you use it, you signed up in the first place in the belief you’d stop getting sent those bloody emails.

Much of the country was deluged by rain this week, but spirits remained fiery at The Punch.

Liberal MP Sophie Mirabella outlined why she thinks political correctness is a grave threat to our freedom of speech. Steve Williams defensively put his hands in the air and said that while he has no problem with breastfeeding, some people need to be more discreet about it. Another Steve, Defence Minister Smith, wasn’t raising his hands in surrender - although he was certainly cursing Bob Carr.

Penbo welcomed the new Foreign Minister to hell. Tech reporter Claire Connelly found a 3D film with a “3D” component that isn’t lame. Lucy hailed the men behind the women and I argued that we need to value the health of the head as much as the heart. Political guru Malcolm Farr called bullshit on people crying “class warfare” about political attacks on billionaires. And Tory Shepherd likewise called it on playing heroes and villains with the Kony 2012 campaign.

There was a bit of a hoo-haa yesterday over the announcement of seven National Living Treasures. You could well argue it was more of a brouhaha than a hoo-haa. Or maybe a just a ha-ha.

Dr Karl wore one of his quieter shirts for the occasion. Pic: Cameron Richardson

The seven inductees to Treasure Island were hole digger Clive Palmer, nerd Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, revhead Sir Jack Brabham, tree-hugger Dr Harry Butler, pioneering medico Professor Ian Fraser, warbler Olivia Newton-John and Kylie Minogue, who some also regard as a singer.

Perhaps the most controversial inclusion is Palmer, the belligerent billionaire who last week called Frank Lowy “an institution who belongs in an institution”. Whaddayouse think? Who else would you have as a National Living Treasure? Is the list a bit of a toss given we’ve got loads of other official honours? What else is floating your boat this Monday?

It’s been a big week. At the top: the Labor leadership clusterpunch. We liveblogged the leadership showdown as it happened. You can find all of our Labor leadership coverage here.

The Monkees’ Davy Jones died and our Helen Parker, a friend of Jones, explained just what she found inside his locker. Steve Kryger sparked a comment storm when he wondered why comedians always take a hard line against religion. news.com.au reporter Claire Connelly set out to write an article about trolls and walked us through her somewhat ironic experience of getting trolled in the process. The Circle issued one of those non-apology apologies over Yumi Stynes and George Negus’ slur on VC recipient Ben Roberts-Smith’s name.

Formed NSW premier Bob Carr briefly re-entered the political scene. A couple of billionaires got into a stoush over kicking balls around a field. Erick explained what he loves about women. And you’re kidding if you think all women should be mothers.

Well, the week certainly took a turn on Wednesday when the Labor leadership time bomb finally blew.

Earlier, Liberal MP and regular contributor Sophie Mirabella had mocked the PM for her attempts to shoot down the leadership rumours. It reminded her of Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi Information Minister, she wrote. When the ALPocalypse finally began, we were all over it. Yesterday we live-blogged the Gillard press conference and our reporter on the scene, Tory Shepherd, wondered why Gillard couldn’t always be that convincing. Editor Tory Maguire detailed the respective camps’ scorched earth tactics. And Malcolm Farr, our chief political guru, previewed what a Rudd administration would look like. Incidentally, many of the ministers that announced for Rudd yesterday were on that list - and vice verca.

In other news this week, Ant saw Ricky Ponting channel Seinfeld, Lucy thumbed her nose at airline snobbery, T-Shep pondered what she’d miss if all men vanished form the earth and Sunday Mail reporter Jason Tin wrote an open letter to The People Who Write Open Letters.

Sky News sports reporter Sam Squiers implored us to lay off Nick D’Arcy, we debated internet piracy (here and here), and I showed how the tide of technological change is sweeping some of our jobs away.

Huge apologies I didn’t get around to addressing the very important matter of the Thursday Word yesterday! Politics was spilling all over the keyboard instead. The word was parsimonious.

Happy Friday. What’s on your mind?

Who loves the weekend for how much more time they get to spend reading? Yep, me too. Especially longer feature/magazine type reads that get put aside during the week.

Emily Symons telling it like it is. Photo: Sunday Telegraph

Got me thinking maybe we could share our best finds on the Monday open thread? To kick things off, here’s three pieces that got me thinking this weekend.

So join in. Add your own reading list, or just let us know what else is on your mind.

1. Ricky Gervais on Wired.co.uk. The piece is mostly about celebrating creativity. Gervais thinks we should focus more on our ability for “playfulness” as adults. He says it helps us to let go, be inspired (and sometimes inspiring) and also, think differently. He also says social media, well okay specifically Twitter can be a great way to excercise this “playfulness”. Here’s a favourite bit that might inspire you on a Monday morning.

The answer is simple. Never grow up. I don’t mean don’t become an adult with responsibility and the weight of the world on you shoulders. I simply mean if you’re writing, or directing give yourself enough time to play. Play the fool. Goad. Shock. Laugh. Trip over something that isn’t there. Try something. And never be afraid to fail. That failure is useful too. It’s just another building block

It was a week of love and grief. Whitney Houston died, and journo Greg Barila channeled many when he explained how Whitney was responsible for his, ahem, sexual awakening. Love showed a different face in Tory Shepherd’s tale of love in a land of sharia law. And author Jack Marx came out swinging in defence of the lonely on Valentine’s Day.

Anyone want a balloon? Picture: AP

Qantas reeled yesterday and Ant wondered who in their right mind would want to be their CEO anyway? The private health insurance rebate passed the house, although Tory M noted the debate had descended into a shoddy class war. The odds shortened on a leadership challenge, our political guru Mal Farr wrote. Penbo explained how the only people in Australia who own guns ended up being crooks. And I explained how Gina Rinehart could take us to infinity and beyond—and improve her reputation infinitely at the same time.

News.com.au journalist Chris Paine slammed his head into a desk when he found out there are people who exist who don’t know who Paul McCartney is. Writer Emilia Terzon made many of us feel like throwing up describing the animal abuse scandal in our own backyard. And Lucy showed grace and poise in disarming the latest round in the war over multiculturalism.

It’s Friday. Happy weekend. What’s on your mind?

So after we posted yesterday’s piece about people who’d never heard of Paul McCartney, The Punch team started musing about our rapidly changing world. A particularly bald and nostalgic member of the team said he remembered a time before muffins migrated south from North America.

some of our best friands are muffins

As usually happens with these things, young Daniel could remember no such time. To him, a world without muffins and friands is as inconceivable as a world without the interwebby thing.

Anyone else remember life before muffins? Perhaps you’re so young that you can’t even remember life before muffin tops, which by our calculations came about a decade after the muffin proper. And what the hell is a friand anyway if not a cheap-arse shrunken muffin with no top? You know where the comments section is…

When you think of breast cancer, what image do you think of?

Honesty. Picture: David Jay

For many: a pink ribbon. But an American photographer has developed a different picture.

David Jay took portraits of breast cancer patients after treatment in order to illustrate an honest picture of life after cancer. It’s called the Scar Project. He wants women to recognise their beauty after masectomies, which are undoubtedly damaging to the self-image of many breast cancer patients. You can find the pictures, which are obviously graphic, here.

Jay explained to The Daily Muse:

The SCAR Project is primarily meant to be an awareness campaign for young women. It’s not about taking beautiful pictures of women with breast cancer but rather about taking honest pictures of women with breast cancer.

I get emails from women of all ages, all over the world, who have breast cancer. They frequently say things like, “I haven’t felt like a woman since my surgery,” “I haven’t gotten undressed in front of my husband yet,” “I don’t let my children see me naked,” but that seeing these images has changed their perception of who they are—changed their life. They see the women in the images and think, “Well, if you look beautiful after this, then perhaps I am still beautiful, too.”

More of that interview here. What do you reckon? Should cancer be characterised a little more honestly in pop culture - that there is a masectomy behind that pink ribbon? Or do we need to use euphemisms when it comes to matters like illness and war sometimes? Do you think Jay’s portraits are empowering for women? Disturbing? Distressing?

It’s Wednesday. What else is on your mind?

We often imagine that New Yorkers stereotype us Aussies as backwards, quaint, knife-wielding, tanned, crocodile-hunting, outdoorsy, friendly, drop-bear avoiding troglodytes. But it turns out that they’re actually cottoning on to our fashion-forward focus. You see, we’re setting trends in the Big Apple (apparently Aussies who refer to it as the Big Apple are actually to blame for the troggy image).

New Yawkers are falling in love with the flat white. Yes, to you and I it may be just the non-frothy version of a capuccino, or the too-milky macchiato, or a drop only distinguishable from the latte by its trendy cupware, but to them it’s the hot new thing. Hugh Jackman’s to blame, and he generally is.

It was a week of leadership tensions, talk of economics and debate about sexism. To kick off the week, I explored why leadership spills seem to backfire on political parties most of the time. Mal Farr went hunting for the government’s surplus. Lucy analysed all four corners of the debate over whether the PM has been treated poorly because of sexism.

Our obsession with interest rates isn’t all that interesting, Tory Shepherd claimed. Stop expecting Facebook to be your friend, because it’s not, Ant wrote, hoping to chasten those of us under 30. And cabbies soliciting sexual favours for payment? A bogus trend, wrote Tory Maguire.

The supermarket price war is hurting those who need the most help, World Vision CEO Tim Costello wrote. The Sunday Mail reporter Jason Tin urged us to tap into reality and switch off the television. Research scientist James Heathers explained the psychology of Punch-ing on, right here. And you had an excellent discussion about the way technology has changed over the course of our lives.

We were having a chat about technology in The Punch office yesterday. Ant was shocked (shocked!) when I mentioned using computers at primary school. As he recalled, when he was in high school, it only had a couple of computers in a lab that you were very rarely allowed to touch. There was at least one in every classroom when I was at school and labs jam-packed with them. And by Year 8 or 9 most had mobile phones.

It's been a long time!

I don’t think I can remember my report cards ever not being typed, whereas the rest of the team could all recall the challenge over having to decipher the teacher’s handwriting. Tory M remembered trying to save up several grand to buy her first computer – when today you can walk into JB Hi-Fi and pick up a laptop for around $800. One day soon all school kids will be typing up their end-of-school exams. Some already do. Times have sure changed.

Considering you, our excellent regulars, are of all ages, we were wondering: how have you adapted to the technological changes of the past thirty years? What changes have you seen? What have you had trouble getting used to? Is it exciting? Terrifying? Astonishing? Confusing? What don’t you know how to do? I only found out about Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V a couple of years ago.

Thought this was a bit of a talker for Thursday. What do you think? And hey, what else is on your mind?

Sexy men smoke. It’s a fact. James Dean, Jon Hamm, Humphrey Bogart and Shane Warne (feel free to add to this list).  So it’s a great pity that smoking will also eventually make them stupid. Or so says new research from the UK that has drawn a link between rapid brain decline and men who are long term smokers.

Puff, puff, puff… and away goes my brain.

Here’s the skinny from Reuters:

The study used a group of men with an average age of 56 when they had their first cognitive assessment. The study used six assessments of smoking status over 25 years and three cognitive assessments over 10 years, and found that smokers showed a cognitive decline as fast as non-smokers 10 years older than them

The study also found that women smokers are spared the effect on their brain because they generally smoke a lot less. Hmmm, we’re not sure about this one. What do you Punchers make of it? And if you’re a male smoker, does this kind of study put you off? Post your thoughts on this and anything else that’s on your mind below. Oh, and happy Wednesday. The week gets good from here.

The fallout from the Australia Day incident continued. The PM’s leadership was further destabilised by silly media errors. Penbo said pollies should just sack their staffers. Our Lucy Kippist followed up our coverage with an expose of the volunteering medal that the PM was handing out on Australia Day. On the flipside, the ALP saved the alps.

The artist Christo and his wife wrapped the Reichstag in 1995. Now they're wrapping a river.

New contributor James Heathers broke down why alternative medicines aren’t scientific. Sue O’Reilly didn’t get the response she was looking for when she asked Tony Abbott to meet with a child with disabilities and their carers. Tory Maguire wondered why Sydney gets so sooky about the weather compared to elsewhere in Australia, Jason Tin decried the end of the internet and Tory Shepherd warned of the dangers of home births.

Elsewhere in the world, a man planned to wrap a river in fabric. How about that?

As many great Australians and members of The Punch team would do after achieving a great success, on Sunday evening Novak Djokovic picked up a microphone and had a go at karaoke.

Between the Prime Minister’s shoe and Novak Djokovic’s shirt, we can easily wildly generalise that clothing theft is soaring across Australia this new year.

There’s a rather amusing video doing the rounds of Djokovic’s chucking his shirt into the crowd after Sunday’s grand final and a woman snatching it from the sky before its intended recipient had a chance to get a hold of it. Here’s an interesting development in the UK on sentencing for drug dealing and possession. Have a squizz for yourself, but here’s the gist:

People who buy drugs to share with friends could avoid prison under guidance that also recognises medical use of cannabis.
Recreational drug users who naively buy small quantities to share with their friends could avoid jail under sentencing guidelines for drug offences published on Tuesday.

Yes, I know, it's the generic cannabis image.

If people are buying small quantities of drugs to share with a friend - should it be a big deal?

Some Australian jurisdictions have, for instance, decriminalised minor cannabis offences. Should it be like that nationwide? Possession remains a criminal offence throughout most of the country, although it’s often up to the police officer whether to charge a non-violent offender or divert them into an education/assessment/treatment program. Is that fair? What do you think?

There’s some more information at the bottom of the post for you to make up your own mind. And hey, it’s Wednesday. What’s happening in your world today?

Welcome to Monday, Punchers and a belated Happy Chinese New Year to all. Speaking of the Chinese New Year, did anyone get amongst the celebrations this weekend and order a bowl of shark fin soup? This Chinese delicacy has got plenty of tongues wagging at the moment.

Mmmmm… sharky

Slippery, glutinous and made entirely from cartilage, the the soup is believed to boost libido and keep aging at bay. Chinese restaurateurs are proud of the dish. They say people come far and wide just to eat it. But conservation groups want it banned. Like Mike Rutzen, the founder of The Australian Anti Shark Finning Alliance told the weekend papers the practice of finning is “cruel and should be relegated to the history books”.

Here’s what it looks like before it’s cooked. Actually, here’s the link. You might not want to see that first thing.

So where do you stand on Shark Fin soup? Post your thoughts on that, or anything else on your mind below.

Plenty has been written about the pros and cons of different circadian rhythms, and the latest research has found you are actually at your most creative when you’re at your groggiest - it’s to do with being a bit unfocused and meandering towards a realisation.

Its 20 million articles (over 3.8 million in English alone) have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world. Almost all of its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the site, and it has about 100,000 regularly active contributors.

Damn. How on Earth will we find out what the Big Bang is now? Pic: AFP

How did we know that? We looked it up on Wikipedia! The Punch must have some kind of superpower, because Wikipedia was “blacked out” for 24 hours to protest against proposed US anti-piracy legislation they say will restrict the freedom of the internet. But it let us in for a bit.

Do you use Wikipedia? Do you trust it? Are you worried about the legislation? Talk about these burning issues, or anything else on your mind, below.

It’s Wednesday. It’s Wednesday. Yay for Wednesday. Arguably the most hopeful day of the week. Two days closer to the weekend. And two days further away from Monday.  What more could we ask for?

I might be cute, but I have breath that would strip paint (thanks to old fart)

And here is one of the cutest animal pics of… well, possibly the year so far.

Now for the caption comp: what’s this little guy saying? Keep it clean people.

Facebook is replete with all things grim and morbid. Attention-seeking status updates, almost as much woe-is-me as look-at-me. Now the social media site is hosting an app that will let you send a message after you die.

‘If I Die” lets you appoint trustees to release your final message in the unfortunate event of your demise.

Would you use it? What would you say? Share your thoughts and anything else on your mind below.

Good morning, welcome to the third week of January. We’re still scratching our heads wondering how on earth, in 2012, a ship worth hundreds of millions of dollars, loaded with modern navigation equipment, ends up like this:

The Costa Concordia. Picture: Getty

But feel free to dive into any topic you like.

It’s Friday the 13th. But in some good luck for you, here’s this week’s Friday review.

A vendor sells dragons in preparation for Chinese New Year in Beijing. Picture: AP

In the news this week: a trio of anti-whaling activists were imprisoned boarding a whaling security vessel. Tory Maguire asked whether their problem was our problem. A Coalition MP caused a bit of a stink (and one too many smell-related puns in the media) with remarks about deodorant. And breast implants exploded.

Father Paul Kelly kickstarted a heated legal debate over “gay panic” legal provisions, which continues here today on The Punch. Emma Jane left some readers of The Punch in tears laughing about the iPhone’s AutoCorrecting software. The feminist/meninist debate continued to rage.

Farmhand Lucy Kippist ploughed into the future of agriculture in Australia. Tracey Spicer wondered why women on the front covers of magazines just can’t keep their clothes on. And wouldn’t it be easier if we just pretended our leaders are Glorious And Defenders Of All That Is Good And Excellent Who Descended From The Heavens At Birth? asked Jason Tin.

What else is on your mind, folks?

I’ve now had a look at the police website and at the actual form, and I must say I’m not comfortable with this.  The instructions and form make it clear that the person isn’t filing charges and that therefore the police will not launch a formal investigation.  It seems the… Read more »

Welcome to Thursday, Punchers! Today’s topic for discussion: “singing in public”. Or, in other words, getting your karaoke on. Like, this woman. Her name is Adelle Neary and she’s an Australian diplomat in Indonesia, who sang a traditional Indonesian song (in Indonesian) on the local talent show “Foreign Stars”.

Ms Neary told News.com.au that she “never would have done it if she knew how much attention it would get”.  Ah, yes. We’ve all been there before. If you care to share your worst karaoke experience, or even your favourite song to sing in public, feel free to do so below.
