Mothers Day
Quite often, you hear a mother say “I can’t imagine life without my kids’‘, and I’m well and truly in that camp. I can’t imagine not having their blessed, sun-shiny presence, minute-to-minute, day by day.

As Mother’s Day rolls around again and women around the country prepare for their tea and toast in bed and get ready to beam when they open that candle, purple notebook or hand cream from the school stall, I find myself thinking about how motherhood has changed me - almost down to the DNA.
It has certainly made me a better person. And it has made me want to keep striving to be even ‘‘better’’ for my self, the kids and other people.

The other day, my daughter came downstairs wearing my shoes. Not the younger one, whose chief purpose in life is to steal my heels and strut around pretending she’s a teacher. Or a hooker. It’s hard to tell.

No, this was the older daughter, the 10-year-old whose delicious little baby feet have somehow morphed to the same size as my own, hence her apparent need to borrow my Converse. The new ones.
Anyway, as you can imagine, I was so thrilled, I threw my arms around her and announced that now we shared clothes, we were undisputedly “best friends”. Would she also like to help herself to my GHD? When could we go shopping together?

In the pantheon of lame annual days of celebration, Mother’s Day is right alongside Father’s Day, Festivus, Talk Like a Pirate Day, and Love Day (which was made famous by The Simpsons).

Let’s face it, if it weren’t for the marketing departments of Hallmark, the Chrysanthemum Growers Association, Breville and whoever puts together Human Nature’s Mother’s Day albums, Mother’s Day would never have gotten off the ground.
That is my firm an unwavering view. Or, it was my firm and unwavering view up until I became a mother.

Or perhaps it’s the other way around and no female has found you tolerable, no matter how “rich”. Since from that comment it would seem you believe that having money and being successful in your career entitles you to have women dropping at your feet. Read more »
