Matthew Newton

Ok, let’s get to the bottom of this Matthew Newton thing. We know he’s Bert’s son. We know he’s had recurring issues with the law. We know he’s been banged up in Miami Dade lockup overnight. And we know he’s said to be bipolar and probably needs some help.

He even dresses Florida

We also know he’s an actor in Florida. Put it together, people. This thing is so stupidly obvious it’s straight out of an episode of CSI: Dumbsville. What’s Newton doing in Florida? Easy. He’s auditioning for the part of a perp in a Florida cop drama.

Think about it. After playing the bad guy in Underbelly, he has a taste for playing crims. And so, this decent, hard-working artiste who takes his craft incredibly seriously is sending a clever message to talent scouts everywhere that he is ready and available should a role come up.

If Matthew Newton’s A Current Affair interview was his opening shot at public redemption, it was a misfire.

Both the actor and A Current Affair seemed to want the Australian public to swallow the troubled star’s “cathartic” TV tell-all and wave him off cheerfully on his road to professional rehabilitation.

But, there was one big thing lacking – free and easy use of the “s” word.

If the media’s intention was to hold a loaded gun to Matthew’s head with the hope of getting an apology, then it was the media’s gun that misfired. Mental Illness already carries heavy stigma. Shame on you media. You should be raising awareness of this very dark disease known as… Read more »

When news broke Bert and Patti Newton were going on A Current Affair to talk about their son Matthew a lot of people rolled their eyes, and then nearly 1.8 million of us tuned in.

Patti and Bert Newton on A Current Affair last night.

I was definitely in the fairly large skeptics camp, wondering what good the interview could possibly do, and if in fact, it could turn out to be self-indulgent and harmful. And then I watched it.

You can read news stories about the content of the interview here and here. And you can watch the whole interview here.

I’d never been too impressed with Matthew Newton. He always seemed like an arrogant upstart who’d taken a ride on Daddy’s coat tails to get ahead in showbiz.

Some role model. Matthew Newton with the impressionable X-factor crowd.

There was no doubt he was talented, but then again, so are many actors who are waiting on tables around the country, desperate to get their shot.

And when allegations emerged that he’d assaulted Brooke Satchwell, my mind was made up. Only cowards hit women. Actually no, only cowards hit other people, full stop. It doesn’t matter what sex they are, no one “has it coming”, no one deserves violence. So it seems bizarre that here I am having a crack at Channel 7 instead of him.
