Kerry O Brien

The strangest thing about Tony Abbott’s performance this week wasn’t that he died a slow death over the course of what should have been a routine 12-minute interview on The 7.30 Report.

The strangest thing was his assessment the following day that it had been a tough interview.

Kerry O’Brien is a very good interviewer, but there was nothing tricky or surprising in his questions on Monday night. Sure, when Tony Abbott’s clutch started slipping, and he proffered his woeful distinction between “heat of the moment” policy commitments versus the gospel undertakings given in “carefully scripted remarks”, O’Brien knew that Abbott was in deep strife and pursued his quarry relentlessly.
