Jason Akermanis

Jason Akermanis – former footballer and king of indelicate comments – caused an unseemly furore in the AFL world this week. He questioned the appropriateness of a state funeral for the universally adored Jim Stynes, who died after a long battle with cancer on Tuesday.

It won’t surprise you to hear that Akermanis copped it from all quarters, with former Melbourne captain Brad Green summing it up best on Twitter: “Aker, you are a tosser!!! Show respect.”

It might surprise you to hear, though, that I get where Akermanis is coming from.

If Jim Stynes was known for his football career alone, then I would consider the offer of a state funeral inappropriate. However, the far reaching impact of the program he was so closely connected to has positively impacted the lives young people in ways we will never fully know. It… Read more »

Well, it’s official. Footballers are processed meat. Anyone who dares add a touch of spice must be eliminated and buried deeper than toxic waste.

Here's lookin' at you, doll.

If you haven’t yet caught the news, Brownlow medallist and triple premiership player Jason Akermanis has been sacked from his second club, the Western Bulldogs. This, remember, is the club that opened its arms to Big Bad Barry Hall, so you’d assume they’re prepared to give guys something approaching a long leash.

But no. Today, they’ve decided enough is enough. Seeya Aker. Don’t forget to take your ego on the way out.

Was it BK who stated ” name the thing he was sacked for ” ? Well in Ackers own words, Brad Johnston and a meeting of players decided they didn’t as a team want Acker in it. That had come about by a number of things, his column, information about… Read more »

Fidel Castro is blogging. Prolifically. And it’s all being conveniently translated into English.

A hat-tip to Alex Beam of The Boston Globe, who has dug out some of the best nuggets from Fidel’s regular columns on Cuba’s state media service Granma. It includes regular rants about US imperialism. “Naturally, I am a politician and it pleases me to compare the virtues of a pirate with the highest circles of imperial leaders in Washington,” he says after quoting at length from a poem involving a pirate.

One column in particular contains an extraordinary segue from a detailed analysis of American foreign policy into World Cup segue. Behold:
