Hospitality

With the Queen having sprinkled her magic on our nation, and the sniff of the sport of kings in the air, a battle royal is fast brewing over pokies. On one side are Australia’s bunyip aristocracy and elite. Rich, powerful and masterfully connected, they are used to getting their way.

On the other side, the very plebeian will of the majority - the common sense of the common people. This royal battle which would normally be settled behind closed doors is now public and transparent and will be a watershed test for our nation.

With James Packer and his thousands of Crown pokies emerging to join Channel Nine, the NRL, some AFL clubs and state governments - not to mention the $20 million advertising spend from hotels and clubs - the line up is complete. All the vested financial interests are singing from the same song sheet. Their chorus line is ‘this will not work and it is totally up to individual responsibility with some extra counselling thrown in’. Little wonder Tony Abbott chose to align himself with them.

Agreed!   We need our culture to be APPALLED at this type of exploitation!   We need our culture to ONLY visit pubs that do NOT have pokies!   We need to understand that our patronage encourages pubs to retain their pokies.   It is not up to Government.  … Read more »

One of the quirky differences any Australian notices when they go to the USA is the culture of tipping.

Not to mention ours is waterproof.Image: AFP

Lower wages mean that waiters, and some other hospitality workers, are at the mercy of patrons who decide if they get to take home enough money to pay their rent and bills.

Australia has gone down a different route, where pay is guaranteed and tips represent a bonus for workers.

Get real.  Lower pay is all about putting more and more money into the pockets of bosses.  I mean is one million dollar holiday house and one Ferrari not enough?  And can you imagine that bosses will forego their (regular) 10% pa salary increase?  Can you imagine that our politicians… Read more »

CEO’s and Directors do not ‘own’ a Company ; they are employed by the shareholders and as such, should, by law, be as answerable to the tenets of poor management as workers are to poor procedure - and the sack. Though Directors may own lots of shares, they are responsible… Read more »

I am the postgraduate dream. I live on minimum wage; I have a flirtatious relationship with the poverty line. However, I think this is a karmic repercussion of my own bad choices. As a younger, less-worldly type I entered into a line of work - dirty, unrewarding work - from which I seem unable to escape: I kill people.

I need to get me an anti-fat suit. Pic: Dean Martin

In the beginning it all seemed like good fun. Harmless fun. However, recently the inescapable truth has dawned on me. Hospitality is about killing people. Most of us are all too familiar with government propaganda about the perils of smoking and drinking, two activities frequently central to hospitality.

However, it’s not these which really grate against my sensibilities. It’s the fat that is propelling me towards a nervous breakdown. They haul themselves out of their cubicles and waddle in at least once a week. Very often they appear more frequently, their numbers certainly seem to be growing.
