Homosexuality

Let’s get one thing straight from the outset. I am not heterophobic. In fact, some of my best friends are heterosexuals. (Oh, OK, maybe “best friends” is not as accurate a descriptor as “some monodimensional caricatures I once saw on a sitcom”, but you get the picture.)

It's unnatural. Pic: Getty Images

Anyway. Up until recently, I was open-minded about people who chose heterosexual lifestyles so long as they didn’t indulge in any of their perverted hanky panky in public, in private or in their fervid imaginations.

Lately, however, it has become clear that radical straights are infiltrating the highest echelons of Western society in a nefarious attempt to indoctrinate young people with their deviate, pro-heterosexual agendas.

Progressive Christianity is alive and well. It hasn’t yet got much of a toe-hold in the Australian imagination. But it will. Why? Because the old language of dogma doesn’t speak to people anymore.

Turning the other cheek… Pic: AP

Spiritual needs have changed, the church hasn’t, and people have voted with their feet.

I wrote Being Gay Being Christian to say that the Christian church’s traditional teachings on gay sexuality are wrong, harmful and unjust. I also wrote it to encourage gay people of faith that their sexuality does not preclude them from having a faith in God.

During a recent internship at a regional TV station I met a pasty, flame-haired, tarred-toothed cameraman named Warren. Literally and figuratively, he was a redneck.

Not all lisps are necessarily camp.

During lunch one day a segment on gay Brit fashion luminary Gok Wan came on Channel 9. Wazza unleashed an expletive-laden verbal tirade which would’ve made Gordon Ramsay blush.

“Why the f—- do queers talk like that?!”Being gay doesn’t change your f——- vocal chords! There’s no bloody accent associated with sexuality!”

Neil Watkins is a sex addict and an acclaimed performer. His play – The Year of Magical Wanking – has been called beguiling and poetic, intense, funny, and astonishingly brave.

It's a thorny issue

“I am Neil Martin Watkins and I am a sex and love-addicted innocent.” That’s how I begin my autobiographical monologue about my sexual shame as a result of growing up in Catholic Ireland.

Of course, it was all just the norm then. An altar to Mary and Jesus on the window sill. A holy water font in the hall. Our mother anointed us every morning before school.

On February 1 the Federal Government will lift its ban on Australian same-sex partners receiving the documents they need to marry in other countries where same-sex marriage is allowed.

David Bartlett's sister Angela Borella with her partner in Portugal

To her great credit, Attorney-General, Nicola Roxon, has asked the Department of Foreign Affairs to start issuing certificates of no-impediment to marriage (CNIs) to same-sex couples marrying overseas on the same basis as they are now issued to heterosexual couples.

A CNI is required by many foreign governments as proof the foreigner who wants to marry in their country is of marriageable age and isn’t already married where they come from.

Margaret Court has been, well, courting controversy these past weeks. The former world no.1 tennis star, turned pastor, has raised the ire of many with a volley of comments labelling homosexuality a sin. Earlier this week the tennis great wrote in The Herald Sun: “Australia is in a steep moral decline”, “especially when it comes to the issue of sexuality”.

Doncha think it's a bit odd to have a statue of yourself while you're still alive? Picture: David Crosling

Outraged gay rights supporters have returned serve. They’re pushing for the Margaret Court Arena at Melbourne Park to stripped of its name and they’ve been encouraging Australian Open attendees to drape themselves in rainbow in defiance.

The kerfuffle is sure making a racket, but there’s something else at fault here. Since when were places named after people while they were alive anyway? Isn’t the whole point of naming a place after someone to commemorate the life and achievements of a person, you know, after they’ve died?

In July 2008 I was shocked when I received a call from the police telling me that my parish church of Saint Mary’s, in Maryborough, Queensland, was a crime scene.

Another dark ages partial defence.

A man was found dead by parishioners as they arrived for a morning communion liturgy. It was devastating and shocking. I and my parishioners followed the case closely. Very soon, two suspects were caught. Our church security cameras caught the events of the terrible bashing.

I was appalled when it was claimed that an alleged homosexual advance was a reason given for the man being bashed and left lying overnight in the church grounds. I was likewise appalled when I found that an alleged or perceived homosexual advance (of even the most minor gesture or touch) can be used as a partial defence in a murder case in Queensland (and also to an extent in NSW). What reason could justify a bashing that leads to someone’s death?

I’m going to say it – gay people have it easy.

Who are we kidding, there aren't that many good looking people on Blendr. Picture: Blendr

The homosexual community may not have many rights when it comes to matters of the heart but in terms of negotiating bedroom bureaucracy things are so much more… uncomplicated. At least in the social networking space.

The other day I joined Blendr, the “straight” version of gay hook-up app Grindr, in the hopes it would make a good story.

I wanted to see if the new incarnation of the reportedly invaluable GPS/social networking Grindr app - used to arrange trysts with nearby users - would work for us straighty-180s.

As a parent of a gay man and National Spokesperson for Parents with Lesbian Daughters and Gay Sons (PFLAG), I am encouraged by the most recent Galaxy Poll taken showing that 75 per cent of Australians “believe marriage for same sex couples is inevitable”.

Parents march for their children's rights

This poll agrees with another Galaxy Poll taken a few months ago that showed 62 per cent are in favour of allowing same-sex marriages, and a NewsPoll that showed 65 per cent don’t have a problem with it.

But still MPs are hesitant to take the step. When I meet with them in Canberra and ask “why?” so often the answer is “fear of the religious minority and possible loss of votes at the next election.” At least they are honest. But is this a good reason to keep discriminatory legislation in place? I don’t think so.

This week, Facebook pages have been brimming over with pictures of same-sex couples kissing. The pictures are a protest against Facebook because a photo (actually a still from EastEnders) of two blokes having a pash was removed.

The EastEnders still that was removed, sparking worldwide protests

Facebook have now apologised, saying the removal was a mistake (check out the exclusive news.com.au story here). Maybe it was, but people are right to be cynical when discrimination against gay people is still seen as OK by many sections of society.

Growing up, there were some things I couldn’t get my head around. Differential equations were one, homophobia was another.

Hi, gay people! How’s it going? Don’t tell me… just super, right? That’s what you people say isn’t it? Not that I would know, not being gay and all.

Sheesh. These people don't even look like they want to change. Pic: Charles Brewer

I’m sorry if that sounded like an odd thing to say. I don’t normally declare my sexual persuasion so abruptly. But I’ve heard you like to convert normal people with your gay agendas and your corrupting lifestyle choices, and since I’m being so open and friendly I didn’t want you getting any funny ideas about recruiting me.

I also heard that gays are pretty upfront and brash most of the time, so I’m pretty sure you’ll appreciate the candour. Just so long as you promise not to get turned on by it. Unless of course you happen to be lesbians. But only the hot ones that look like normal women.

“Homosexual tendencies (are) one of many conditions that beset fallen humanity.”

According to Exodus International’s policy statements, those who embrace “homosexual behaviours” have lives that are “sinful” and “destructive”.

Rather than simply condemn non-heterosexual desire, Exodus International (A Christian organisation that condemns homosexuality) adopts what they refer to as a ‘redemptive’ approach – seeking to ‘reorient’ the ‘fallen’.
