Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway was one of the lucky ones. He was born on this day in 1899 and died in 1961, and lived through some of the most fascinating and varied periods of history.  Thanks to a series of action-packed jobs, Hemingway was also right in the thick of things. He started as a 17-year-old journalist; served as an ambulance driver in both world wars; was a reporter in the Greek revolution and the Spanish civil war; and of course, he wrote several books. Then there were several passionate relationships with women; wives (four), lovers and friends - in particular Marlene Dietrich.

A writer who omits things because he does not know them only makes hollow places in his writing
