Documentaries

It was the first day back after a two week Christmas break for the couple of dozen men who worked the Nymboida coal mine in northern NSW.

A Nymboida miner circa the 1970s digs for an elusive seam of King Gee

The shift was coming to an end when an underground gas explosion ripped through the mine at 3pm on 12 January, 1976. Slowly, the men staggered out of the mine, some seriously injured and being helped by others.

A head count was done. One man was missing. It would take hours for the mine rescue service to arrive, and by then it might be too late.

No real miners anymore mate. Go have a look round the pilbara, lots of fat FIFO workers with plucked eyebrows & spray on tans. No miners in sight, not even on the mines. Read more »

It seems that the union also had reservations about investing more capital into the mine. At least the original owners had the integrity to shut the thing down rather than risk lives in pursuit of profit. Read more »

The ABC mini-mini-series Paper Giants has been a great hit. Funky footage blended with some brilliant performances, fabulous frocks, and an intriguing behind-the-scenes look at the creation of women’s mag, Cleo. On a smaller scale, it did for the magazine industry what Mad Men did for the advertising industry.

Here at The Punch, it made us wonder: What’s next? What else could benefit from this historical dramatisation?

The ABC is reportedly looking at other Cleo-related or Packer family-related options - but we reckon there’s much broader scope in the genre. Anyway, see below for our thoughts on Paper Giants, and share your own thoughts below.

There was so much fanfare when The September Issue first came out, with everyone caught up in the hype of “Anna, the Ice Queen” and “Anna, the Bitch” and “Anna, the Hardcore Alien” it was hard to assess the movie objectively because as usual, all the hype pointed in one direction. I, for one, definitely wanted to see it for the sole reason of judging what Anna was actually like in, you know, almost-real-life.

I wanted to see her cut-throat ways and watch her spiking staff with her whiplash tongue first hand. I wanted the camera to be in an elevator when Anna stepped in and watch the look of fear on the faces of those cowering out of her way.

This is the Anna I was expecting. Like Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. Someone vicious and uncaring and completely insensitive of other people’s feelings.

I agree, I found her to be brilliant at simply doing her job. Her job is to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’. That is what an editor does: they EDIT. It is the job of all creative contributors (Grace Coddington et al) to create 100 beautiful things for every issue. It… Read more »

She’s a fashion editor yet has a hair style like that?? That’s why I think her profession is a joke. There is no need for it. Trends change so fast and everyone has their own unique style that they like so it makes her job completely redundant. Whose to say… Read more »
