Controversy

There is something profoundly disturbing about the furore surrounding US politician Todd Akin – but it’s not what he is being hammered for by other politicians and commentators.

And in today's ridiculous outpouring, I declare your device inferior to a Nokia

Akin, an 11-year veteran of the US Congress and committed anti-abortion campaigner said in a live TV interview last weekend that he believed women were unlikely to become pregnant after suffering legitimate rape.

The resulting shock and fury has continued unabated with everyone from the President down belting Akin. President Obama’s comments epitomised the popular angle of attack – that it was unacceptable for rape to be parsed into categories of legitimate and illegitimate.

Who’d have thought?  I also liked this sneaky little effort: “In fact, there is bipartisan support for the proposition that human activity is causing carbon to increase in the atmosphere, that this is causing climate change, and that carbon emissions must be reduced and/or captured to reverse this trend.” There… Read more »

I’m not defending NewsLtd on this because I agree, but they’re not the only culprits. I once wrote to the ABC pointing out a very basic factual error (easily verifiable) on its website about a criminal investigation in Canada - and got a reply along the lines of “that’s what… Read more »

While Jeff Kennett’s work in helping to found beyondblue, the National Depression Initiative, is to be commended, it’s now apparent he has lost his way and it’s time to resign as Chair.

Trust me, you'll be a lot less depressed if you put all your chips on 17 black. Pic: Vince Calati.

First there was the unfortunate incident with the homophobic comments about gay and lesbian parents and the mental health of their children. Let me remind you what he so publicly communicated via an opinion piece in The Herald Sun:

“There is no substitute for parents of both genders. Happy heterosexual marriages are the best environment for the mental health of children.”

How often does the average Australian go to a casino? or the average depressed gambling addict? I think you would be much better focussing your attacks on the pokie venues that are dotted around the country in almost evry town. RSL’s and sporting clubs for instance are also supposed to… Read more »

This is not an anti-Eddie piece. Nice guy, by all accounts. It’s not an anti-Melbourne piece either. Nice city, by all accounts too. Very liveable and all that.

Who's in the hot seat now, Ed?

This isn’t even a piece written in outrage against Eddie McGuire’s cheap, nasty “land of the felafel” slur against people of Arabic origin in Western Sydney, the sharpest rebuke of which was by young freelance blogger Antoun Issa.

Despite that slur, and the national backlash, and Eddie’s embarrassing half-arsed apology, the fact is most people outside of Melbourne couldn’t give a toss about what Eddie says or thinks about anything. That’s what this piece is about.

There was a recent discussion here to the North on “who you would change channels to avoid”. My answer was Eddie. He drives me nuts with his “Pal” crap and “hail fellow well met” to anyone and everyone. Tosser of the first order for mine. Read more »
