Art galleries have to be among the best places on earth. Cool, airy, spacious and full of natural light they’re a precious oasis in the middle of a busy day; especially for their seemingly magical ability to absorb sound and chaos, even when the throngs descend.

And descend they did at lunchtime today on the Art Gallery of New South Wales for the announcement of the winner of the 92nd Archibald Prize.
