The US now wants to bury the rest of Al Qaeda

President Barack Obama, whose presidency has been instantly and spectacularly rejuvenated, will visit Ground Zero in Manhattan tomorrow and provide the next major rallying point for Americans to consider life after Osama.

Despite scenes of intense celebration, the reality is that gatherings outside the White House, Times Square and Ground Zero have been quite small.

The shock of the announcement saw people rushing out to the streets late at night to join with their fellow Americans, but the lack of any large screens for people to focus on, or any organised speakers, meant the gatherings burned out quickly and people went home.

Chelsea Clinton is getting married and cash registers in Upstate New York are going to chime. The one day event that will be held this Saturday is estimated to cost $US2 million and I just hope she doesn’t turn up.

I think she should run to the nearest airport instead and with Marc Mezvinsky in tow, hop on a plane and elope herself right out of there. But not before checking her maiden name at the door and leaving the pressure of being a Clinton, especially a Clinton on her wedding day, far, far behind.

The speech that could make the world a safer place

In August 2007, Barack Obama promised that if he were elected president he would ‘travel to a major Islamic forum and deliver an address to redefine our struggle.’

His impressive speech in Cairo yesterday fulfilled that promise.

Obama is the finest orator in a generation. His national political career was kicked off by a single speech: his keynote address to the Democratic National Convention in Boston in 2004.
