Stephen is a freelance writer born and bred in Melbourne. In another life he wrote for pretty much all of the city’s major arts festivals including the Melbourne International Film Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Melbourne Writer’s Festival and the Melbourne Greek Film Festival as well as a few interstate beasts, BIFF and Tasmania’s Ten Days on the Island Festival.

When not in a festive mood Stephen is a scriptwriter, comedy writer and all-round nice guy who enjoys drinking alone in bars. By day he works in Marketing and Communications at La Trobe University and dabbles in a spot of copywriting for anyone who will pay him for it.

The difficulties of giving up on quitting smoking

They say quitting smoking is hard, but I’ve learnt the real truth. It’s not just the quitting that’s difficult (although it is), starting up again is bloody hard too.

I’m not just doing this for attention; this is not a cry for help nor is it part of any quarter-life - well, a little closer to third-life - crisis. Truth be told I always enjoyed smoking and I never wanted to give it up in the first place.

I started engaging in smoking when I was sixteen. I say “engaging” because I was really pretending to inhale smoke whilst holding it in my mouth before blowing it out like a clandestine burp.

A single bloke’s guide to surviving the man drought

There’s a man drought in the city. Single girls outnumber single guys two to one, maybe even three to one. This is true because I’ve read the proclamations in countless articles, seen the stories on A Current Affair and watched in horror as hapless farmers take their pick of a hundred potential wives.

The odds are probably closer to five to one.

Being newly single and on the fast-track to 30 I know things are stacked in my favour. I can get dressed on my own, cook a balanced meal and my addiction to video games is mild… I can stop playing whenever I want. Really.
