How camp lisps have turned tongue in cheek

During a recent internship at a regional TV station I met a pasty, flame-haired, tarred-toothed cameraman named Warren. Literally and figuratively, he was a redneck.

Not all lisps are necessarily camp.

During lunch one day a segment on gay Brit fashion luminary Gok Wan came on Channel 9. Wazza unleashed an expletive-laden verbal tirade which would’ve made Gordon Ramsay blush.

“Why the f—- do queers talk like that?!”Being gay doesn’t change your f——- vocal chords! There’s no bloody accent associated with sexuality!”

Punch: Piracy on the High Cs is music’s greatest enemy

“Illegal music downloading is like casual racism; widespread and inevitable. That doesn’t make it acceptable!” That was a frustrated exclamation from Sydney singer-song writer Josh Pyke during our recent interview.

It’s a notion that’s drummed into children from a young age by parents and teachers: “just because everyone’s doing it doesn’t make it right”.

Apparently millions of adult Australians have forgotten that advice, and as a result we’re not only breaking the law en masse, we’re cheating hard-working musicians out of deserved pay. As Pyke says, music piracy is similar to race-based bigotry; inherently wrong yet widely accepted.

Rocking like an Aussie: Our top ten songs of 2011

The “Australian of the Year” awards were presented last night, but today the focus for those musically-inclined is on metaphorical silverware.

The “Triple J Hottest 100” countdown is touted as the “largest public music poll in the world”, and today marks the 22nd instalment of the fan-voted list.

Inclusion in the best ton of songs of the year is highly coveted, and a top ten berth is an indisputable endorsement of a track’s timbre.

A Tomic bomb ticking all the right boxes

Despite the quality of Michael Clarke’s record since taking over the Test captaincy, he’d been much-maligned until his Sydney triple ton. But Clarke’s record-breaking knock has finally silenced the knockers.

The performance was all the more memorable because it happened it was on home soil. Amplified media attention, free-to-air TV coverage, and the ability to attend events live means sport played domestically is afforded extra credence.

Bernard Tomic now finds himself in a similar boat to the former Mr Lara Bingle.

Punter, stop hedging your bets. Retire now

Princess Mary is currently holidaying in Tassie, but she’s not the only home-grown royalty in town.

From a humble upbringing in country Mowbray, Ricky Thomas Ponting has ascended to arguably the loftiest post in the wide brown land; Australian Cricket Captain. While he’s come under fire of late from the media, selectors and fans on the mainland, the support back home has been unwavering.

The headline from Launceston rag The Examiner before his debut test read: “He’s Ricky Ponting, he’s ours… and he’s made it! Tassie’s batting star will play in his first Test”. And the Taswegian media have been waxing lyrical about Punter ever since.
