Rory Gibson is a senior journalist on Queensland’s Courier-Mail newspaper. His most recent roles have included Weekend Editor and Night Editor, but by far the job he invests most of his time and energy in is writing the newspaper’s weekly beer column. He is a former Editor of the Townsville Bulletin, a former Editor-in-Chief of the Fiji Times, and former Chief Sub-Editor of The Australian. His interests are wide but his time is spent mainly doing research for the beer column. Because when it comes to beer, you need to be well informed.

The war can be funny, Clarkson is a genius

Fact 1: Jeremy Clarkson is a funny man. He doesn’t take life too seriously, and loves poking fun at sacred cows, whether they be on four wheels or two legs. He is also famous. His Top Gear show is watched by millions and has been for years now. You know by now what you are getting when you watch Clarkson on the tele.

Fact 2: The second world war ended 65 years ago. Holocaust aside, you’d think that by now, a generation later, telling jokes about it would cause nothing but mirth.

Fact 3, unbelievable though it is: Some people, fully aware of fact 1 and bearing fact 2 in mind, have complained about Clarkson, saying he has insulted half of Europe.

Wowser-watch: shooters are making environment’s day

I went shooting recently. A couple of old friends and I spent a few days on a farm in northern NSW which can only be described as a target-rich environment.

I’ve never seen so many rabbits in one place ... between us we nailed about 300 of them and left thousands more chewing up the paddocks.

So numerous were they that at night you could have walked through the pastures with a cricket bat and scored a century.

Wowser watch: battle of sexes skewed against men

Apart from the kerfuffle it caused in Brisbane last week, the nation may have missed a rugby league scandal that makes Cronulla’s woes look as shocking as a Phil Spector wig.

In fact it was less a rugby league scandal and more the culmination of years of a war on the interaction of the sexes in the workplace.

Poor Joel Clinton, the Broncos frontrower, was fined $50,000 for inviting a friend to his room the night before the match against the Tigers recently. That friend happened to be a woman.

And? And nothing That’s it, that’s all he did.

Wowser watch: the plastic beer glass is pure evil

YOU know what I love about the Grand Canyon, other than that it is one awesome kick-arse hole in the ground?

It’s got no fences. You are free to fall into it if you feel so inclined. Sure, there’s the odd sign telling you that straying too close to the edge could bring a premature and permanent end to your holiday, but that’s the extent of the bureaucratic concern.

If the Grand Canyon was in Australia, it would have a fence around it.

Too dangerous, the nannas who govern us would cry, to let people just explore it in a manner of their choosing.
