Running around like head- less chickens on a hens night

One of my best friends is getting married. This is a joyous occasion but one that has caused much stress and fear, mostly from me because along with the other bridesmaids, I’ve been given the task of organising the hen’s party.

We know what we don’t want, and that’s some aging male stripper with an orange tan waving his willy in our faces.

We’ve also ruled out phallic drinking straws, drunken cruise parties and any games where vegetables masquerade as genitals, but we’ve also been warned by other hens not to go overboard on the penis-policing, at the risk of the turning the whole thing into a big nana’s tea party.

The dark side of cute: the truth about puppy farms

There’s something about being in the presence of puppies that can make grown adults a bit soft in the head. You know the sort. The ones who let out cries of “Hurro puppeee! Aren’t you adowable?! Yesh you are! Yesh you are!” as soon as they enter the vicinity of any small, wet-nosed creatures.

Most dog lovers would agree: puppies are adorable, and they’re everywhere. Our parks are full of them. Suburban cafes put out water bowls for their furry guests.

We have doggie day care, puppy primping, specialist clothing, gourmet pet food. There’s a whole, thriving industry tied to our love of four-legged friends.

How to be good on $10 a day

Editor’s note: This week on Twitter Rhiannon pledged to donate $10 each day to a different charity. And she’d welcome your suggestions on charities worth donating to. You’ll find her blog and Twitter name at the bottom of her piece.

Here’s my confession: I’ve done a few bad things in my life.

When I was seven I stole some stickers from my teacher. As Julia Roberts would say, big mistake. Huge.

Even now I still turn nauseous now at the thought of banana-scented scratch-and-sniff.

The ethics of buying a goat

For sale: One cute animal that will help you save the world… or will it just make you feel better?

Charity gift packages that offer you the chance to buy a friend a goat, some chickens or even a pile of poo for a poverty-stricken family in the developing world might make us feel warm and fuzzy, but they can also be misleading.

On the plus side, they offer a tangible way of giving someone the gift of charity donation for a present. Buying a “goat” might come with an e-card, a receipt and a funny picture of the creature packed with his suitcase and ready to go. In short, a relatable image of what you may have contributed to.

Shoes are fine for feet, they just don’t fit the brain

“Shoes make me happy. I’m superficial. Whatever.”

I pass this sign, plastered in the window of a cheap shoe store in Bondi, at least once a week.

Whether it’s meant to be funny or represent the views of its customers, I’m not sure. But the marketing manager behind this cringe-worthy sign has tapped into a solid gold business concept: selling ignorance.
