The sometimes unintentional lessons my father taught me

I didn’t get enough time with my father. However, I know I am incredibly fortunate to have as much as I did.

ABC TV recently announced they were making a documentary about him (airing tonight, February 23 at 8pm). It would cover his early years, his business life and what has happened since he died. I wasn’t the least bit interested in the extra coverage of the family post his death, and I hope there is very little of me in it.

However, I recognise that the producers wanted to study the impact of his life - which of course didn’t stop when his heart did. So I agreed I agreed to participate. I am doing this because I believe that the best way for me to honour my father is to help others understand him. So, with greatest respect to my father, (Michael) Robert Hamilton Holmes a Court, 1937-1990, I share some of the things he taught me.

EUROPE: the IMF asks for EU members to share in a 78 billion euro bailout of Portugal. EU Finance Ministers unanimously agree.

NEW YORK: Head of the IMF offers to have his wife post $1million bail to get him out of Harlem police Cell. Judge refuses.

The most minute details concerning the incident that lead to Dominique Strauss-Kahn missing his flight this weekend will no doubt become common knowledge over the next few weeks.

I respect Chris Sandow, and wish him every success

The story of Chris Sandow is well known to those who follow even a little rugby league: he’s bloody tiny, has a heart the size of Queensland, and when he does actually make contact with opposition players, they certainly know it.

He was the league’s top rookie in 2008, has won matches almost single handedly, divides critics and fans alike, and after four years, he is leaving the Souths Sydney Rabbitohs, the Club where he has made his professional debut, to join the Parramatta Eels.

I first met Chris at the southern end of Erskineville Oval as the sun set on a hard training day for the prospective Rabbitohs under 20’s side. I had been asked to meet the new group of promising juniors, and had been well backgrounded on the squad, particularly “Chrissy” as he was already known.

I am torn. There are clearly two sides, and they just can’t seem to get on with each other.

Sometimes I think the fighting must stop, other times I am prepared to back my favourite.

Then there is the issue of the constant expansion! I just don’t understand why it is going ahead in West, Bank(stown).

The salary cap fits and we should continue to wear it

We are in the middle of a complex and highly charged barbeque-stopper involving the NRL salary cap and a good old-fashion cheating scandal.

They are, however, two completely separate issues, related by proximity but not causation. The salary cap issues can perhaps be understood in a simple four-step logic:

1. First, you have to decide where you stand on the principle of having a team equalisation system. If you don’t want a system, then you get teams that are so much better that they are in a different class to the other teams in the competition.

I am concerned at the logic that because some jerks are treating Australia Day the way Liz Taylor treated the institution of marriage that we should get rid of the celebration altogether.

The structures of our society are no better or worse because of actions of a few. Trend is not established by a few data points.

Global warming is not off because of a cold snap in the UK. The monarchy is no more appropriate for Australia because Will seems like a great bloke. And our flag is no more or less appropriate because some people (mis)use it.

Why does scare-mongering worry us so much? Because it works. And it is simple to do.

This is how it is done in four easy steps: First, you must have a position of actual or perceived authority. Either’s fine.

Second you proclaim your objectivity, or your access to some knowledge that sets yourself apart from the mob. Fancy titles, having written a book, or apparently having seen something nobody else has, are all a good start.

The power of sport

This is not a League v Union v AFL v Soccer rant. This is about whether we can agree that sport is important. If we agree it is important, then surely we can work together to do it better.

Sport can be part of a coordinated strategy to get a number of results - we need healthier kids, we need people to think binge drinking isn’t acceptable, we need people to want to solve conflict without violence. We need more kids to dream, big.

The ugly argument about what is better - thugby league, yawnion, gayfl or wogball - is as sophomoric as those phrases are offensive.
