With a blockbuster film adapted from a popular book series, hot young cast and devoted fans, the dystopian epic that is The Hunger Games was always going to be compared to that other huge franchise, Twilight.

The books might sell the same theme: Teens vs the world. But they’re different where it counts.

After having to swallow Twilight’s mellow and passive lead heroine Bella, her Hunger Games counterpart Katniss comes as a breath of fresh ass-kicking air. Finally, there’s a popular teen heroine who can kick butt without a dude by her side.

What’s your favourite worst song?

It’s a universally (at least I hope so) accepted truth that the best song EVER does not actually exist.

It simply can’t. It’s pretty unlikely your best song will be my best song, mainly because songs are subjective and all that, but also because everyone has had different life experiences, so songs speak to each of us in different ways.

Much the same for the world’s worst songs.

I have a friend - let’s call him Jeffery - who has been anonymously toiling at the same company for two thankless years.

Last week, he decided he wanted out, and applied for a job at a funky new ‘web 2.0’ outfit. Mild and self-effacing, poor Jeffery had no idea of the ordeal that awaited him.

I got a call after the interview. The voice on the other end sounded sad and despondent. ‘I really stuffed up’…

One thing the Poms have got right: a budgie smuggler ban

So, British tourist hot-spot Alton Towers has put the kybosh on budgie-smugglers. Well done the Poms, I say.

The reason behind the ban on Speedo’s and ‘other tight swimwear’, the fun park says, is to ‘prevent embarrassment among fellow members of the public and to maintain the family friendly atmosphere of the resort’.

This being so, I can’t think of a more apt time to call on the Rudd government to roll-out a similar kind of initiative.

To tackle cyber bullies, start with teen self esteem

The bullying epidemic has claimed yet another victim: 14-year-old bubbly, fresh-faced Chanelle Rae.

Rae’s funeral took place in Geelong on Friday, exactly one week after the high school student took her own life hours after reading a message on the internet.

We will never know what that message said, but we can guess at the kind of person that sent it.
