Less talk and more action on workplace diversity

Here’s a theory on why true gender “equality” still, in 2012, eludes so many workplaces across the country. I’ve started to think that the reason for the achingly slow pace of change is because we are a nation of doubters.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a CEO or senior manager who doesn’t (publicly, anyway) agree with the premise that attracting and keeping more women can only boost their talent pool, that helping staff better mesh their work and home life would help morale and loyalty, and that putting more women in senior levels and on their boards can improve their company’s performance.

But that doesn’t mean their companies are necessarily following suit.

Fat acceptance might help your ego, but it could kill you

There was some interesting opinion ping-pong going on between The Punch and the ABC’s The Drum opinion site this week. On The Punch, dietician Susie Burrell advised ditching friends who “drink too much, eat too much and are overweight” and who encouraged the same unhealthy habits in us.

Over on the ABC site, an outraged Lydia Jade Turner, clinical director at BodyMatters Australasia, hit back at Burrell’s take on obesity point for point.

The two made interesting reading, and I was happily making my way to the end of Turner’s piece when one sentence gave me pause. She stated: “The best thing we can do for our health is focus on health-giving behaviours, and allow our weight to fall where it will.”

Pregnancy health warnings don’t lead to abortion

Pull up the drawbridge, cue the statement about “inconclusive evidence’’ - another pesky health warning is about to get in the way of making dosh.

The Federal Government is considering product warning labels on alcohol bottles as part of a strategy to curb the rates of foetal alcohol spectrum disorder, something a dozen countries around the world already do.

The industry has, unsurprisingly, come out against the prospect of “cigarette-style” warning labels - because it may apparently cause a flurry of terminations from guilt-wracked women.

Today’s ‘threat’ is tomorrow’s model citizen

So, apparently we Aussies are one of the most tolerant nations in the world when it comes to migrants and ethnic minorities. That’s according to the OECD’s latest Society At A Glance.

Pardon me, but it’s been hard to tell lately.

The barrage of bigotry that has passed for public discourse on multiculturalism, asylum seekers, Islam and pretty much any issue touching on brown-skinned newcomers has been exhausting and depressing.
