In 2006 he was named Wild Magazine’s Environmentalist of the Year. He pursued engagement with all sides - government, unions and industry - to forge the South East Queensland Forest Agreement, which saved 500,000 hectares of old growth forest and helped the timber industry make the transition into plantation forestry. Over a five-year period he campaigned against landclearing in Queensland that resulted in the ending of broadscale clearing in 2004 and the saving of 20 million hectares of native bushland. He also championed the protection of Queensland’s most pristine rivers which resulted in the Wild Rivers Act, and the subsequent protection of 10 rivers from major development with more to come. That comes less than two weeks after Western Australian Supreme Court Chief Justice Wayne Martin handed the James Price Point gas project its biggest setback by ruling that the WA Government had acquired the land illegally.
