Karalyn Brown, a is former HR and recruitment consultant who now dispenses job search “wisdom” to anyone who is lucky (?) enough to stumble across her blog InterviewIQ. A self taught social media marketing fan, she spends much of her time building up her business through tweeting, targeting key words for Google and fluffing about on Facebook and LinkedIn. When she’s not doing that she writes resumes, coaches on interview skills and writes careers articles for the Australian Weekend Professional. Karalyn has co-authored a book “What do employers really want?” and would love to be asked to write another one. Occasionally she talks jobs and how to find one, late night on abc radio with Tony Delroy. In her spare time she likes swimming at ocean pools and politicians who annoy her.

How many asylum seekers have you met?

How many people who describe asylum seekers as queue jumpers, “illegals” or part of some terrorist conspiracy have ever actually met an asylum seeker, and tried to work out whether it’s true?

Given that we don’t actually have many asylum seekers in Australia, chances are it’s very few.

Why not talk to an asylum seeker? Pick one who’s exhausted their appeal, who’s now waiting at Villawood. Ask them why they’re now so desperate, that they go on hunger strikes, or they sew up their lips. Ask them whether they’ve actually had a fair hearing.

What pollies’ Tweets tell us about their employability

Headhunters have been digging around digital dirt, ever since Google became a verb. Since there’ll be a few politicians looking for new jobs after the election, I thought it’d be amusing to analyse their tweets from an employment perspective and ask “would I, as a headhunter, offer a politician a job based on their twittering?”

I’ll disclose from the outset that my analysis is based on no more than my past six months hanging out in the twitter-verse building up my business, and from my time as a recruiter. For something more sensible and scholarly take a read of this research: Social media and the 2007 Australian election.

Picture yourself in this situation. You’re a young female business graduate striding up to the board room for an interview with Westpac. You see a picture of CEO Gail Kelly and you think “I can do that.” Think again sister.

If the latest statistics predict your path, there’s a strong possibility that in 15 years time you’ll be stuck in middle management or if you’re returning back part time from baby, you’ll be sentenced to “special projects.”

The statistics are bleak. Look at these statistics from the EOWA:

Seven things employers really want

What do employers really want?

After interviewing 25 hiring managers I am still slightly confused.

We asked all the questions anyone applying for a job should ask a prospective employer, hoping we’d find some simple – even sexily digestible– answers.
