When the magazine’s editor rang to ask him what he wanted to be when he grew up, he said, “I don’t know”, and spent the next ten years regretting his lack of fortitude. He subsequently moved to London and began reviewing films for a gay magazine. He was not gay in any functional sense but he did need the money. He had two plays performed in London, one of which was described as, “deeply moving” by a woman who had eaten fish at a chinese restaurant, owned by Hungarian migrants, shortly before seeing the show. His first fully-commissioned feature film script was the subject of a protracted legal dispute in Portugal in early 2009 and will probably only serve him as a good anecdote at dinner parties. He never goes to dinner parties. He now lives in Poland and writes the popular news.com.au blog, Splat. He also writes for The Guardian newspaper in the UK and his first novel, Tofu Landing, will be published in the UK in February 2010. I work from home and, generally, I sleep at home too. I seem to have lived the life of a butterfly in reverse, a few decade of delicate and delicious socialising, followed by a quite decade in my cocoon. I’m not the only person who doesn’t get out much, mind, there’s quite a few, and in the northern hemisphere they often gather around the Guardian campfire and comment on the cricket as it happens on the OBO (over-by-over report).
