Erica Bartle is editor of the popular media blog site Girl With A Satchel (http://girlwithasatchel.blogspot.com), a sort of Top Gear meets Media Watch for the glossy magazine industry.

In her editorials, Bartle attempts to put a positive spin on the oft-maligned business of gloss, while keeping magazines accountable for dubious editorial practises and tracking industry trends.

Bartle has written for Cosmopolitan, Cleo, Marie Claire, Girlfriend (where she acted as deputy editor) and The Walkley Magazine, and can be heard discussing the glossies on Mediaweek’s regular magazine podcasts.

Boomers are back in fashion but kids still rule the cash

Last month, Woodstock Festival – the event that’s come to represent Baby Boomer youth culture in our collective consciousness – turned 40.

Given the Boomers spawned the crazy consumer consumption habits that sent us crashing towards the GFC, it was only fitting for promoters to get the talent off the couch, jab them with Botox and organise the requisite merchandising and exorbitant ticket pricing. Ka-ching!

Meanwhile, the media and marketers have been celebrating ageing while concurrently exploring ways to delay its visible signs in order to appeal to the cash-cow that is the Boomers’ retirement fund (albeit one reduced by the GFC).

Therese’s glossy reign

While Kevin Rudd has never been media-shy (quite the opposite, what with his Twittering, website and blog), it seems his wife, Therese Rein, is finally ready for her close-up.

Back in May, I wrote ‘Rein Priming for Mag cover?’, suggesting that the likelihood of Rein appearing on the cover of an Aussie glossy was “about as likely as Susan Boyle landing the cover of British Vogue”. In the glossy media world, a picture of perfection sounds louder than a CV full of personal achievements, after all.

At the time, the media was going bananas over Rein’s apparent weight loss, which culminated in Woman’s Day bringing her down to gossip magazine level, publishing unflattering and unauthorised pictures of her exercising in her gym gear after the magazine was reportedly refused an interview.
