I get so frustrated with Government talkfests. Their fancy name is a “Summit”.

Whenever there’s a big issue facing this country which the politicians don’t know how to resolve without offending someone, they hold a “Summit” so they can “consult” with the community.

A whole lot of associations and lobby groups with vested interests are thrown together for the Summit, recommendations are made which politicians say they’ll “consider” and which are then promptly shelved, never to be heard of again.

We shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that Australia is still in a “different” economic league to the rest of the world and there are five rocks underpinning those solid foundations.

The global financial turmoil is definitely a worry. Many are saying it’s based on fear… and they’d be right.

But it is also based on reality. Some of the economic numbers coming out of the US and Europe are seriously bad. So bad that the global market reaction has been justified.

Giving to help others is a beautiful thing. But is anyone finding the increased aggression of “chuggers” is destroying a lot of that goodwill?

There are a lot of Australians doing it tough through no fault of their own and it’s our duty to help as a payback for the privilege of being part of the community.

Welfare groups are also suffering from the big squeeze. Donations are drying up because of the tough economic times and the demand for their services is increasing for the same reason.

Share market panics are scary and absolutely no-one knows for sure where they’ll end up.

The smarties will talk about buying bargains now because Australia’s future is more linked to China than the US or Europe, and how our economy is much better placed to ride out any financial storms than the rest of the world.

They’re right. BUT share market panics are not logical. They’re driven by emotion and almost impossible to predict.

A reasonable person’s guide to modern driving

Everyone should abide by driving laws but I reckon there’s a need for a guide to driving etiquette.

Is it just me or are drivers becoming more agitated, more selfish and lacking any respect for other motorists? They aren’t necessarily breaking the law, they just make driving more annoying.

Gone are the days when driving was a pleasure. Today it’s a means of getting from one place to another with the least amount of aggro.

Stop talking about your money, spend it!

In 1983, money came out of the closet. Up until then any discussion about money was taboo and considered uncouth. No-one ever talked about how much their house was worth, or what shares to buy, or whether to buy Aussie dollars now to get the best rate before they went on holidays.

Term deposits were considered financially sexy. No-one had heard about managed funds, superannuation or property syndicates unless you were among the rich and famous.

At that time treasurer Paul Keating floated the Australian dollar and deregulated the financial system.

Commercial television’s breakfast programs aren’t for everyone. It’s not compulsory to watch and there are plenty of alternatives.

But the facts are that they connect with their viewers in a more powerful way than their traditional television news formats.

Stop. Don’t start commenting yet. Hear me out and then go your hardest… I’ve broad shoulders (and a sense of humour, check out the clip above).

I’m passionate about organ transplants in Australia and I reckon you should be as well.

Australia has had a terrible history of underperformance when it comes to organ and tissue transplants when compared with most other developed countries.

It has simply been un-Australian. The bottom line is that lives have been lost unnecessarily. Fortunately there are early signs we’re starting to turn that disgraceful underperformance around. But a lot more needs to be done. A lot more. And each and everyone of you has a role to play.

I love Australia Day. I love celebrating what this country is all about. But you know what I hate about Australia Day?

I hate blonde-haired, blue-eyed yobbos prancing about in the Australian flag who intimidate people who don’t look like them.

I hate the drunk bloke who told me in Chinatown the other night that I had the personality of a rubber glove (fair enough, that’s his view) but then turns to my Sri Lankan-born son-in-law and says the problem with this country is “the coloureds”.

Enough is enough. The diabolical mess surrounding flood insurance must be resolved now before even more Australian families are sent to the financial brink at their time of need.

As we watch the flood devastation around the country, understand that up to half those affected will not be covered by insurance - even though they have a home and contents policy and think they’re protected.

The reason is the small print in their policy (be honest, how many have actually read that bit?) and the fact that many insurance companies have had their fancy lawyers draft definitions of “flood” which don’t actually payout on a flood situation.
