Happy birthday Frank McGovern

Let’s never forget men like Frank McGovern and Gavin Campbell.

We’re losing them so quickly now, these veterans of World War II. Frank and Gavin are both proud Perth men. Not the city – I write here of the light cruiser, HMAS Perth, sunk by the Japanese at the Battle of Sunda Strait in February 1942.

Frank is having his ninetieth birthday party in Sydney this week. Gavin, 88 will be there with Frank’s family and friends to help Frank celebrate this personal landmark.

America’s mastery of free speech, even for maniacs

You’ve got to hand it to those Americans. For them, there is much more to democracy than theory. It’s there to be practised and even better if it can be done in the streets.

A now-ageing generation took democracy to the streets and forced the politicians to bring an unpopular war in Vietnam to an end. And against the odds they changed America and world history campaigning for civil rights laws that paved the way for a black American president.

And though small in number by comparison, those freedom-of-speech loving Americans were back in Washington streets at the weekend to protest against the policies of that same black president.

Kyle should use his free time to visit Auschwitz

Just a few years ago I ended up in Warsaw on a business trip to Poland where my former boss Eric Dodd had been invited to talk to top government officials about reforms to Poland’s embryonic private health system.

As a journo and an amateur student of history, I was astonished to learn that our hotel in Warsaw was located on what was previously the Jewish Ghetto in World War II from which tends of thousands were shipped to their deaths.

And just a matter of a few hours drive away was the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp where hundreds of thousands of Jews and gypsies were imprisoned in the most horrific conditions and slaughtered in the gas chambers.

Brave woman who revealed James Hardies “fines” sham

James Hardie’s bosses should forget it if they imagine their company’s descent into a self-inflicted public relations purgatory will end any time soon.

It’s not going to happen while there are victims of asbestos-related diseases and their families capable of asking questions no-one in authority seems to anticipate or is prepared to answer without being pushed.

You see, so many of the people affected by the asbestos scourge are just so bloody courageous, eloquent and insightful in projecting the enormity of their suffering and loss—combined with an unrelenting quest for justice.
