David Fagan is editor of The Courier-Mail, the main source of news and information in Queensland. He gets crankier each day at the failure of governments of all flavours to deliver meaningfully on anything they promise - whether it’s building a barbecue, a submarine or reshaping the health system. This is most exemplified by drugs policy which is destroying individuals and corrupting institutions. The Courier-Mail has been reporting heavily in recent months on the issue of amphetamines abuse, the harm it does and attempting to identify some solutions.

Abolish Queensland ... the government, that is

WOULD Queenslanders ever agree to their state being abolished? No way, you might say, particularly in the season that the state is in the box seat to seal its fourth consecutive series win in state of origin football.

Well, think again. A Galaxy poll in The Courier-Mail today shows two-thirds of Queenslanders think they’re being over governed. And more than half of those think the state should be first to go, followed by local councils and, finally, Canberra.

Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen would be spinning in his grave.

One simple way to take ecstasy pills off the street

Australians are the biggest per capita users of ecstasy in the world, a statistic no one in their right mind can believe is one to be proud of.

Politicians routinely hatch solutions to the growing degradation of our collective intellect caused by the misuse of amphetamines but they routinely ignore a simple solution to the problem.

That solution will again be put to the nation’s police ministers and the new Federal Home Affairs Minister Brendan O’Connor when they meet in Perth tomorrow. It involves the very simple step of regulating the import of presses used to make ecstasy tablets.
