Dave did his apprenticeship as a fitter and turner and then worked as a lift mechanic in the construction industry.

He was elected National Secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union in 2007 after working as a union activist and official for many years.

He has campaigned on many key issues for working people, most notably the protection of employee entitlements.

Dave was the key negotiator in the Tristar entitlements dispute in 2000, which became the instigator of national industrial activity to secure workers’ entitlements, resulting in the establishment of the National Entitlements Security Trust (NEST).

Dave also played a key role securing workers’ entitlements after the collapse of Ansett Airlines.

Dave’s passion for the rights of working people is matched only by his passion for the St. Kilda football club.

A high dollar carries an even higher price

To some Australians the high dollar is cause for celebration.

A great way to pick up a bargain over the internet or a cheap holiday overseas. But for many, including 100 workers at Caterpillar in suburban Melbourne last week, it means watching your industry become less competitive and suddenly finding yourself out of a job.

The cause of the high dollar is Australia’s mining boom.

Labor risks throwing away Australian jobs

Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner said yesterday on Meet the Press that the government choosing to buy Australian made products was like him doing his 15 year old daughter’s homework.

I’m not sure what he means by that, but it’s clear he hasn’t been doing his own homework when it comes to using the government’s stimulus packages to create the most jobs possible.

In fact, the government choosing to source products overseas is like getting the neighbour’s kids to come over and mow the lawn, and then wondering why your own kids are hitting you up for pocket money when you go to the shops.
