Sam Squiers
Sam Derrick joined the Sky News team in 2010 as a sports reporter and presenter. She is also on the commentary team for the Ocean Thunder Pro Surf Boat Series, screening on Fox Sports and Channel Nine.
Before joining Sky News, Derrick was a reporter and presenter for WIN News Wollongong from 2005 to 2009 and also worked as a producer on the TV series Australia’s Greatest Athlete (Channel Nine).
Derrick won the Australian Sports Commission Award for Best Sports Journalism for a Regional Area in 2009, and the NSW Surf Life Saving Media Award in 2008. She has been a finalist twice for the NSW Sports Awards (2009 & 2010).
Fluent in German, Derrick lived in Berlin from 2003 to 2004, completing an internship with the international news broadcaster Deutsche Welle TV, and playing softball for Berlin in the German Bundesleague (National League). She also became a supporter of football team SV Werder Bremen.
Derrick is originally from Orange in central west NSW. She has a Bachelor of Journalism and International Studies from the University of Technology in Sydney. While studying she was a sports manager for P&O Cruise Ships in the South Pacific during her university holidays.
A passionate sportswoman since her early years, Sam regularly competes in running, swimming, netball and basketball, and is a surfboat rower in the bow seat for the Warilla Barrack Point Surf Club. She has run several half marathons, and took bronze in the gruelling seven-day George Bass Surf Boat Marathon in 2010.
Living in Wollongong and with one eye red, the other one white, Sam is a passionate Dragons and Swannies fan.
