UPDATE 3/8/09, 5pm : Ten has just announced that Kyle has been sacked as Idol judge. Here’s what Emma wrote last night…

The decision of Austereo to suspend Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O from the morning show will now put pressure on the producers of Australian Idol and Channel Ten to decide whether he should stay as a judge on the popular TV program.

On Saturday Channel Ten was quoted in The Age as saying Kyle “will obviously be in the audition episodes as they were filmed some time ago.”

“But Idol is a family program, we consider this a very serious incident and our executives will continue discussions over the weekend to come to a decision regarding his future on Idol.”

Considering Australian Idol premiers next Sunday, they will have to announce this week whether they are standing by or punting the controversial personality.

Their problem is they are going into their seventh season and they have already made changes to try and overcome viewer fatigue and arrest a drop in ratings. This season the show have lost two talented personnel, amusing co-host James Mathieson, and music co-ordinater/arranger John Foreman who both resigned this year.

Also there are major format changes as there will now be a two hour Sunday show, with the performances and the elimination occurring on the one night. I would love to know how they are going to make the voting fair particularly if they open the phone lines at the beginning of the show. Anyway that’s another story.

With those major changes are they really going to want to tinker with the judging panel? For someone who always thought he was a talentless tool, in my opinion last season Kyle Sandilands was the most entertaining and ‘most helpfully critical’ of the judges. Dicko, of who I am a huge fan, appeared tired, and Marcia Hines is more a life coach then a judge.

So who should they get to replace him? For a quick fix I think they should consider Paul McDermott, he is already in the Channel Ten stable. He is delightfully snarky and he also has a background in music. Or they could consider rotating a different judge through each week, as they do in the US version of So You Think You Can Dance. This has the advantage of changing the dynamic of the judging panel each week, and if anyone is outstanding they can consider locking them in for the next season.

Whatever TEN decide it is a risk for this crucial season of this long running show. Do you stay with the known but potentially have negative PR for the season? Or should they go for a new approach which could add some much needed energy to the panel - even if it could be one change too many and may alienate the show’s fans?

There seems to be some confusion - Idol is about entertainment not music - please do not confuse the two.  Mr Sandilands will now be able to concentrate on reducing his girth - theres always a silver lining.

More than anything, I’m glad Sandilands is off Idol. He has no connection to music, apart from producing what will inevitably be the most appalling music by his wife. Idol has no real connection to music either, but do they need to rub our noses in it with Sandilands.

      He’s a no-brainer - literally.

      Off with his head!

I agree with Poiter.  Put Jackie O in as Kyle’s replacement on IDOL.  She has been the guaranteed “kiss of death” for every TV show that she has appeared in.

They could replace him with Jackie O.

I am with you Sara. Who ever doesn’t like him don’t need to turn their F TVs on or have they radio on 104.10 He is just honest and open person and nothing is wrong with that.  He done nothing wrong asking that question.  I am a parent and I would never ask my daughter on the radio if she is having sex. Her mother new about rape but she still wanted to know about her daughter sex life. Must be stupid mother , who new about rape but done nothing 2 years ago. So she wanted something for free. I hope she can sleep at night. She done wrong by her daughter and also Kyle. And for Australian Idols, this is a show to find a talent not some family relaxing show. If u r fat, ugly and not talented stay away from show as u ugly people should know that. Kyle is not horrible judge he is just honest to YOU GUYS. So if you can’t take it stay away. He is fun and very honest and good hearted but some jealous bastards are there to destroy him. Boring people stay away from his shows as u are ruining fun for all other people.

. . . and they are still only just discovering the “gravity” of the situation. Idiots, all of them. Farewell Kyle S and Jackie O.  May your sponsors be punished and your producers (the real culprits here) rot away slowly, somewhere tropical.

I have listened to Kyle for many years and whilst I don’t always agree with what he does on air, I’ve never heard him so remorseful and apologetic about anything before this incident. Unfortunately, this on-air segment went terribly wrong and whilst its easy to blame Kyle and Jackie, the mother must bear alot of the responsibility here. I believe that the Hosts did all they could reasonably do to bring about an end to the segment once they realised the brevity of the situation. I’m with you Vic..

Vic, if you ever become a parent I think (I hope) you’ll be able to see just what was wrong with this on-air situation; and for anyone in public life whether that be in politics, media or in any other capacity, some basic decency is expected by the public.  As for Kyle losing his job, Channel Ten has given the reasons why.  A few years ago, a Governor General lost his job for mishandling a similar situation, when he made some careless comments on ABC tv that showed he neither understood the situation or cared about the possible hurt he was causing to already damaged people who looked up to him, too. Hollingsworth is his name, and very few people thought he was in the right. You may learn something by looking that case up…

It’s not the point, the girl should never have been put in the position she was in the first place. I would hardly call it a ‘stunt’.

This entire thing is ridiculous! Why is everybody targeting Kyle in this and not Jackie O - she did as much (well actually as little) wrong as he did. This is a witch hunt by people who already disliked Kyle for some reason or another, and jump at any opportunity they can to call for his sacking. And everyone seems to be forgetting that this girl’s life might actually become better for what has happened. She went off the rails for 2 years because of what happened to her, and she wouldn’t tell her mum about it so she could get the appropriate help. Thanks to 2day fm, her mum now knows and she is able to at least try to help her daughter cope with the event better. And she is even getting free counseling. Or would it have been better if her life just kept going the way it was…
Kyle has done so much good for so many people. And if you don’t want to hear or see Kyle, then don’t watch idol or listen to 2day fm. It’s pretty simple. And I’m sure more people listen to that station and watch idol because he is on it than those who don’t.

I just wanted to say to Kyle and i hope he reads this is you got dealt a rough hand and i would love to see you bounce back. To the others Yes he is a arrogant twat who says the most controversal things but as i read more and more about this crazy interview his reaction comes across to me as an ‘Errrr’ reaction rather than a calous reaction.
To me what kind of MOTHER would put her child in that situation knowing about the rape and then letting the poor radio hosts who knew nothing about it take the rap!!!
How about we all stop this right now… The only reason the media gets a reaction to this is because WE give it.
So to Kyle chin up… There are people who support you…

Confirmed.  He’s gone from Idol; Channel 10 just announced it.  And his crime wasn’t the attempt to appear supportive after the revelation, it was putting an underage kid on the radio for interrogation knowing full well that the subject of her sexual activities was going to be brought up.  Some “stunt”.

    • Vic says:

      06:07pm | 03/08/09

Just an email in support of Kyle Sandilands.  I was a listener on the day the stunt went wrong - and that’s all it was, a stunt gone wrong.  No one set out to hurt anyone, and I can’t believe that Channel 10 have given into “media pressure” to have the showed “recessed” and him fired.  Did Karl Stefanovic get fired for being drunk on air?  Did Todd McKenny get fired for being found drugged up in the park?  I wouldn’t have thought these were very “family orientated” acts!  If the media played it as with the dead air gaps, and not chopped they way they wanted it heard then maybe there wouldn’t have been such a backlash!  You have just lost yourself a very loyal listener!  I would appreciate a response to this email.

I watched on season of Kyle as a judge. What a fool! He spent most nights obsessed with the state of virginity of the young heart-throb who took his religion seriously. Sandilands is one way to make people turn away. Yuk!

    • Red says:

      03:16pm | 03/08/09

Get the three Masterchef judges on board! Kalombaris can keep Sandilands at bay and satisfy his unquenchable urge to keep his jaw flapping, while the rest of the country enjoys the show! Win Win Win!

    • TB says:

      01:16pm | 03/08/09

With the Austereo news of Vile and Taciky O’s “suspension”, TEN has at last awoken to what an untalented, bullying cretin can do to a show.  Not only a massive roar of public outcry, but the withdrawal of a major sponsor (Optus).

I never want to see Sandilands or hear his stupid voice again.  I watched Idol once after he joined the panel but never after that.  If he’s booted off, I’ll watch and enjoy it again.  People, give TEN the message that we don’t want our kids watching a bully and picking up tips on how to treat their schoolmates.

The only reason I don’t watch Idol is him, I hope they do the right thing and ditch him

Kyle is a grub and deserves to be sent to the bench for a long time. There is no place for what he did on radio last week and he has now pushed the boundaries too far. When will we the audience realise that this shock/smutty so called humour he carries on with is not where our culture should be heading. What happened to intelligent humour, humility, manners and integrity? He cant even say sorry properly which probably sums up the real character of the man. Good riddance I say.

    • Aleg says:

      06:06am | 03/08/09

      How about both?

Leave Kyle out for a few weeks. Have a few other judges come on.
Depending on how the others go, Kyle might not come back.
