Kyle Sandilands is copping it from all angles and the moment, having just been dumped from Australian Idol over the terrible stunt he and Jackie O pulled last week with the 14-year-old victim of sexual assault.

Jackie O's getaway from responsibility car. Photo: Gregg Porteous.

Yes, his co-host Jackie O has also been put “into recess” by 2Day FM, but it bothers me she seems to be missing out on a large portion of the heat.

The only difference between O and Sandilands during the sketch that went so wrong last Wednesday, was he made that idiotic remark about it being the victim’s “only experience”.

In the minutes leading up to the on-air disaster O was there, joking about how scared the girl was to be strapped to a lie detector machine on national radio.

Marcus Casey has a piece in today’s Daily Telegraph that in part examines the work day in the Kyle and Jackie O team.

Casey quotes a former Austereo executive as saying: “He turns up just before they go on air and leaves straight after. It’s Jackie O who stays behind for the planning meetings while he goes off.”

The former staffer also says: “Jackie O is as bad as Kyle when it comes to performing tasteless and demeaning stunts - anything for ratings.”

Media Watch last night played extended excerpts from a different skit in which the co-hosts tormented a young refugee woman, who was desperate to meet the American-based niece she had never laid eyes on.

I had to listen to it with my hands over my eyes, for some reason that seemed to make it less awful.

Why Jackie O is described as Sandilands’ sidekick is beyond me. She was just as vocal and maniacal during this skit that ended with the two young women literally on their knees begging to be allowed to actually talk to each other in person.

Maybe it’s because Jackie O is so cute that people have let her off the hook.

There’s been plenty of sympathetic profiles in the womens’ mags documenting her battles with body image.

But this is a woman who gets paid a huge amount of money to play the straight man in Sandilands’ misogynist shtick. He calls her fat, she cries, she picks up her massive cheque.

Whether the tears are real is irrelevant. Jackie O is not just along for the ride, she’s co-piloting the sinking ship, and she should be made to explain herself.

Sandilands habitually opens his hole and says stuff no one should say on air.

She is JUST as responsible as Sandilands for this last one, but like ya mentioned, he asked that last question which just dumped the scales of decency over the edge.

No doubt Jackie is hiding pretending she is innocent.  IT is disgrace the way these people behave and act.  What a terrible influence they are on our children.  Asking a CHILD under the age of consent about her sexual activity on radio is a disgrace.  The mother, Jackie and Kyle should have their heads examined as something clearly is missing from there.

Sanderlands and O’Neill have almost single handedly contributed to the way so many young kids think that if they become outspoken. cheeky, loudmouthed, unlike-able, idiots, they can get on radio/TV and earn big money. The reality of course is quite the opposite. They just become outspoken etc etc etc idiots and probably end up on the dole and miserable.

So will Dairy Farmers drop Jackie O as their brand ambassador?  I think she’s just as bad as Kyle. Their show has always been nasty, tacky, mean and in poor taste.  There’s no low they won’t stoop to for ratings.  Pathetic.

Apparently a quarter of their listerners are 10-17 yoa.  What parent would allow their child to listen to such drivel?

Although I am loath to come to the defence of anyone on this program… the other difference in the presenter’s reaction to this mess is that Jackie O apologised.  While it certainly doesn’t excuse any of her on-air antics, it must count for something - especially when juxtaposed with her offsiders absolute arrogance.

Why is everyone so quick to blame the radio station and it’s DJ’s, when the truth is that people today are so debased that Kyle and Jackie-O’s “disgusting” behaviour and content are one of the best rating radio show in the entire county? Clearly people crave what they deliver.

This pair (and their producers) are pimples on the backside of society and its about time they got their comeuppance.  Apologies are not enough - its time they were taken off-air.

How about the line managers at austereo, you know the other people in the planning meeting, was no adult present to stop this disaster. Kyle is now the nominated escape goat.

That stunt involving the refugee was also pulled by the SAFM breakfast show, and guess what, they have the same Network Content Manager, funny that!

“I’m alright Jack-ie” Given she is no doubt very strong in the team’s creative meetings - there has been published comment that she is a driver in these meetings - she is just as culpable. There’s even an added layer of slyness to this which Kyle has avoided (not the sharpest tool in the shed…) by painting herself as the apologist. Time to step up J.O.! You’ve enjoyed basking in the glory of success and ratings now it’s time to cop it sweet and deal with the depths of your poor choice.

Has everybody forgotten that it was the girls mother that put her into such a ridiculous position in the first place if you want to play the blame game then she should be the first one on the list! I think she was despicable putting her daughter in that position knowing about the rape beforehand… And come on we all tune in each morning to see what will they do today! proven by their number 1 rating!! Yes they are bending the morality line and quite often…But we still tune in again! I say bring em both back on air and get over it yeah it backfired… Im sure howard stern had a few of those on his show and he is still regarded as Americas best ever shock jock!! So I say rock on Kyle & Jacki-O do what you do best create something for everyone to talk about when they get to work in the morning….

It was obvious to me from listening to the segment that Jackie O’s role was/is as Kyle’s enabler. She makes the comments that allow his off-colour remarks to be made instantaneuously tolerable. That’s just as bad in my book. In fact, it shows a greater degree of smarts than Kyle, and so she should have known exactly what they were setting that young girl up for before the segment went to air and in the planning stages.
Actually, they are obviously both smart cookies who have become too clever-by-half with their continued ratings success. They also seem to not be in possession of a thing called a conscience.
As a mother of a 15 and a 13 year old, I would never allow my children to listen to that program in the mornings, as their moral and ethical gatekeeper. I certainly would never allow my child, below the Age of Consent, to be ritually humiliated by Kyle and Jackie O in that way for a couple of Pink tickets.
        What were they all thinking?

You, along with many others, have missed the point entirely:  this was a sordid stunt that breaks all sorts of moral and ethical boundaries, and it was enabled and endorsed by the management of Austereo, enacted by Kyle, Jackie and the mother, and fully supported by you , the listener.  Pointing the finger of blame at any one of the guilty parties alone is pointless.  You should all hang your heads in shame that these pranks were allowed to get to this point unchecked.
Shame, Wayne, shame, for your complicity in this degrading stunt.  You and all 2day FM listeners should hang your head.

I firmly believe that Jackie O is as big a loser as Kyle Sandilands. I dont think the reason is sexist as a previous blogger stated, women, especcially the bad looking ones, tend to cop it worse then men in these types of situations. I think this is mainly to do with Kyles stupid remarks at the end of the segment “is this your only experience”. If he kept his fat mouth shut, i doubt there would have been a backlash as big and as overated as this. Jackie O is just as responsible for putting a 14 year old child on the air just as much as her counterpart. She didnt listen when she said she was “scared” and didnt want to go ahead. She pursued with dollar signs in her eyes. Shame on Jackie. If Kyles going to be sacked and loose his career, so to should jackie. Its fortunate for her however, she has blonde hair and the intellegance of a fish - good looks which will pull her out of her self made hole. Kyle doesnt have that on his side.

She dont have the brains to cut it and cruises to a large extent on her looks so we cut her slack. Should we?  Probably not but what the hell, shes only a sheila.

That said, sack her and destroy her career along with Kyles. She deserves it. Shes used up all her publicity points.

      Well,

Almost everyone is commenting that he’ll be back, because Austero wants it blah blah blah. People if you are outraged with him and Jackie O, then stop listening to the show, boycott it and he will eventually be taken off, have you got desire to do that or just want others to act for you?

    • Jonathan says:

      12:25pm | 04/08/09

The mother is being dealt with by DOCS and the police.
Austereo is being dealt with by the media and the public because of a voluntary code of conduct that they are clearly not responsible enough to either contribute to or adhere to.  Hence the public backlash.

I haven’t listened to the Kyle and Jackie O show for about three years. I can’t believe that people are so surprised by this appalling stunt. Really it’s nothing new to the show. Jackie often talks about her being sexually active since aged 15 and Kyle talks about gang bangs and his fetish for Asian women. Come on Sydney lets get rid of this filth. Put Hamish and Andy on instead at least theyre educated and funny.

    • earthgirl says:

      12:57pm | 04/08/09

The lot of them should be ashamed. The mother, kyle, jackie o , producers, the whole lot of them. The fact that the girl in the centre of this is underage is why so many people are outraged. Who was advocating for her? Who was protecting her privacy and her rights? Nobody really cared - if any of them had one fibre of moral value then somebody would have suggested that maybe questioning a teeenager live on air about their sexual history for the purposes of entertainment.  Questioning an adult - entirely different scenario.
What I would like is whoever came up with the idea and the execution of the segment to show their faces and justify the decisions that led to this. Kyle, Jackie O, the mother, the producers - the cast of asshats. Take responsibilty for your decisions and your actions.

    • Andrew says:

      01:06pm | 04/08/09

    • tom says:

      01:12pm | 04/08/09

Supporters of Kyle and Jackie o seem to want to blame the mother for the whole disaster. She no doubt should be held responsible, however if a stranger or even a male neighbour for that matter, asked your 12-14 year old daughter about her sex life you would call the cops and cry pedophile. What makes this worse is kyle asked questions to a young child that crossed a line which ‘No’ adult should ever cross with a child. He exploited a damaged child for listeners and perverts out there. He and Jackie o should have said no to exploiting this child right from the very beginning.  How dare they exploit a child for ratings they both need to lose their jobs.

out of 1 or 2 negative segments, ive heard 100’s of great ones where people who are less fortunate have been lended a helping hand by the show. given money, prizes etc… changed lives for good

management is the main problem here. if they are letting these two go to air with properly screening the content before it airs they have no one to blame but themselves if they loose thier lisence. thats why management with an idea put delays on the show so they dont go to air live.

Not responsible, eh Elle? Whose radio show was it?

The point is, these two presenters and Austereo/2DAY FM chose a programme format and content where a minor was coerced into a public broacast for profit and entertainment. Wrong: indefensibly wrong.

On air, if you care to listen to readily available copies, despite the girl’s protests, the two presenters proceeded to taunt her in the run up to the big shock. Indefensible.

The programme is in clear breach of the commerical broadcast code of conduct, as to imediate content on the day.  In the broad, the programme design is indefensible:  use of minors for commercial gain, in a sexual context.. Wrong. Indefensible.

The programme and the two presenters should be taken off air permanently. And the Minister for Communications should be directing Austereo to show cause why their license to broadcast should not be revoked Australia wide, forthwith. Get some new players and a terrfic object lesson to the others.

The progrmame’s major Sponsor was Optus: reviewing their attachment, apparently, but do go ahead and give 2DAY, Austereo and Optus a serve. and a complaint to ACMA and the Minister wouln’t hurt either.

Kyle deserves all he gets, but then so does Jackie and the rest of the production team that approved the segment. More than that the public that has made this show the top rating radio program in the country for the past few years also needs to be accountable for the tone of this show which has been developed to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Yes the buck stops with Kyle/Jackie and Austereo, and those heads should roll, but all the people who listen to them and constantly seek titilation and cheaps thrills by demanding more and more abhorrent stunts are to blame also. Remember this isn’t the first time something so irresponsible and tasteless has occurred on the show, so the listeners are a part of the decline of the show’s standards too.

Get over it. Unfortunately you don’t need to apply with references to be a mother… A radio broadcaster however - you do.

It is Kyle, Jackie, the producers, 2dayfm and Austereo’s job to put decent, appropriate and entertaining content to air and they have failed. They *did* have to apply for their jobs and all of them are experienced in their field - so this shouldn’t have happened. It did happen and they need to be held accountable for their actions.

When you sign up to be a broadcaster, you do so with the knowledge that YOU will be held responsible for everything you say on air - that is what’s happening here. And thank god it is, because enough is enough with these two.

And to all these people saying “they’re just making cutting edge entertainment and they slipped up” - this wasn’t a mistake. From the beginning it was a calculated and malicious content idea that should have never gone to air. People may argue that they’re just giving the audience what they want… But where will we draw the line? Public executions? Just because it would attract high ratings doesn’t mean it should be done.

Don’t always give the audience what they want, or it could get as ugly as this was. Every single day.

Jackie O is doing what she always does. she is just as bad as Kyle but she is just hiding behind Kyle’s nig mouth. Kyle and Jackie O have been making crude and inappropriate remarks on both live television and radio for years. the only difference between the two is that Kyle makes a big deal out of the situation he gets himself in and Jackie O hides behind her co-host. they are both disgusting and it is sad that this is situation is why they are getting sacked, it should have happened years ago!

Watching the coverage on Media Watch last night made me realise there are a whole lot of Producers, Executives etc, behind the scenes of Kyle and Jackie O who are also equally responsible.

This whole situation is disgraceful.  How did a planned segment such as this ever get management and station approval?  Absolutely irresponsible.  Jackie is definitely just as responsible as the vile Kyle.  Her attractive looks and sickly sweet demeanour seem to have somehow allowed her to dodge public criticism and accountability.

One of the first lines I remember a poster adding to the punch was along the lines of “self indulgent outrage” I think that’s what a lot of people are doing here, indulging in their outrage, trying to distance themselves from the show they liked or indulging in bringing down a shock jock they didn’t like.

At the end of the day putting kyle and jackie o out of business won’t change a thing, they are nothing but the speakers on the PA system.

Most of you live in pleasant you are rarely confronted by the problems of the lower class and when you are you respond with outrage and stifle any logical or rational outcome.

Jackie is be a coward.  She was leading the choir of laughing as the hyena pack circled in on scared prey.  Is she really so scared of answering why she allowed a young girl to be asked a couple of questions on the radio?  After all, it was only to win some P!nk tickets.

If Jackie is not being a coward, she easily prove the world wrong.  Afterall, it was just a couple of questions and some tickets.  Wasn’t it?

I say get rid of them both along with the production team and never go down that road again.

    • Jonathan says:

      06:04pm | 04/08/09

      Hi Michael,
I think you’re wrong.  Many of the responses I’ve read are both logical and rational.  It’s a public outcry against something that people have seen as unfair, immoral and just plain cruel.
And please: when did this become about class struggle?  Problems of the lower class?  Is rape a specifically lower class problem?  Is stupid parenting a lower class problem?  I’m sure the Austereo executives who’ve condoned and profited from this behaviour aren’t lower class, nor would Kyle and Jackie be.  So what’s your point?
Also, I see no problem with listeners distancing themselves from this debacle: if I’d ever listened I sure as hell would be.  I’m in the other camp, one of those who don’t like shock jocks in general and would like to see them all brought down.
This will make a difference, in that sponsors will distance themselves from this rubbish, reducing the likelihood of the money-hungry broadcasters encouraging these sorts of antics.
      Good day to you sir.

Christ sake, will everyone get off their backs? They didn’t know the young girl had been raped - the mother did. The article should OBVIOUSLY be titled “Where’s the mother in all of this?”

Why aren’t you journos chasing that bit up? Because Kyle’s a soft target that gets more viewers than you do. Just destory him why don’t you? It’ll make your lives a lot easier.

One thing that nevers comes up in the “kyle and jackie” bashing is that the show has fantastic numbers—easily number one in the ratings for its slot. This is highly relevant when it comes to weighing up the criticisms levelled at Austereo for giving Kyle and Jackie such a long leash—whatever your view on their ethics and behaviour they are doing their job well (ie. attracting listeners in droves). Perhaps a better question to ask would be why so many people tune into the show?

    • davido says:

    • Jase says:

      07:48pm | 04/08/09

How different is the Kyle and jackie O show to ACA and TT?

Having a crack at societies misfortunes is what us ‘voyeurs’ crave daily….and a ratings winner!  This is no different to Alan Jones, Ray Hadlee, Steve Price ranting & raving at the expense of others so THEY can attract outrageous salaries and bonuses.

It’s only when a taboo subject is involved that anything with a brand runs for cover and looks for scapegoats.

Australian media has always had insecurities with individuals who generate more interest than them from breaking the ‘norms’ and reap the benefits.  So when an opportunity arises, they’ll stick the boot in to eliminate a threat.

The show didn’t ruin the 14yo’s life - sadly she’s a product of her environment.

Perhaps that is where the focus should be.
I for one will boycott Channel 10, Fremantle media shows and Optus products for taking such a cowardly stance.  They have benefited from the Kyle & Jackie O show up to this incident.  Only when there’s an outcry that they try and deceive the public into thinking they have morals.

I hope that Kyle and Jackie pull through this even bigger and even stronger!

Matt Y:  Sure the mother knew the girl had been raped.  But WHY were they questioning a 14 year old girl about her sex life?  Don’t you see what the problem is here?  Seriously?  Yeh, the mum is stupid, seemingly sub-moronic.  But the radio station and the presenters gave the stupid mother a forum, a forum which was set up specifically to ask this girl about her sex life and about illegal drug use.  Being under the age of consent, any sex she was engaging in was rape, by definition.
As for the mother:  she’s being dealt with by DOCS and the cops.
Grant:  the listeners and sponsors are as much to blame as the station and the presenters.  They egg these playground bullies on to new and uncharted lows.

BUT, the fact remains, some idiot thought it was a good idea to allow this pathetic excuse for a parent the opportunity to do this - and this pair went along with it.  Everyone involved in this stunt, in front of the microphone and behind it, failed this girl.  EVERYONE.  And I hope they all suffer the consequences.

With my un-educated knowledge of the subject, it sounds to me, get it out there; would this person disclose had it not been for the hype? Without hearing I can guarantee that there was no maliciousness or knowledge in how the conversation would transpire (happy to be wrong), my understanding for the business involved in these people getting it wrong is that it is not worth it.
Besides this, talking and expressing anything, nothing something is the most important thing…((sorry it happened this way, I hope you feel (the way you want to feel)).

I dont see how this is either of their faults… the girls mother - her legal guardian allowed her on the show knowing good and well what was going to happen. There would have been some sort of contract signed on the mothers part. Kyle and Jackie O did not even ask the question. It came from the mother.

The fact is that not everyone in this world likes or has to like each other. If you simply dont like someone who is on the radio, dont listen.

It just goes to show how uneventful peoples lives are when they have to make is their lifes work to get “Kyle and Jackie O Off-Air”, its time to take a look at your own lives people.

I think you’ve latched onto an irrelevant side-argument and run with it.  Even if you were right about this and it’s the “upper classes” somehow mocking the “lower classes” how does that vindicate what they’re doing?  You say that people are responding with outrage at being confronted by the problems of the lower classes: I still don’t see how rape and stupid parenting are exclusive to the lower classes.
Your argument is pointless.  Regardless of any of it, they still asked a 14 year old girl about her sex life in a planned segment.

I believe this show needs to be permanently taken off air. If I read correctly before, a quarter of the listeners are teens- which goes to show the level of maturity this show targets. I think Kyle and Jackie-O are scum, abusing their positions as ‘media icons’  and influencing the teens that listen.

I agree that Kyle and Jackie-O are not the only ones to be blames- I really hope the mother is being dealt with by DoCs and the Police. But the fact remains that whether this girl happened to have been raped or not, they were talking about an UNDERAGE girl and her sex life. I’m disgusted!

    • Matt says:

Jack I have very little doubt that this whole thing has anything to do with Tall Puppy (poppy) Syndrome.  Kyle & JO are the two types of people you either love, or love to hate.  The outrage has have very little to do with the media and their supposed vendetta against Kyle.  Nor any perceived vendetta that the rest of the Australia public have against Kyle, and the only people who think there is a vendetta against him are his loyal (yet ignorant) supporters.

Personally I can’t stand either of them, and always when I head the whining voice of Kyle and the high pitched cat call of JO immediately turn over to a different station (and luckily for me that rarely happens as I generally don’t have their station tuned in).

As for whose to blame, everyone is and this included the non-listen public aswell, because it shows you how far we as a society have gone down that sewage pipe.  However as far as this single incident is of concern, the main people who are to blame and Kyle, Jackie O, the producers, the mother and the management.  But Kyle only arrives in time for the show and leaves directly after so he isn’t to blame.  Oh but my fellow readers he is just as much to blame as the rest of the sorry bunch.  He had as much right and time to say no before the even, to the interview that went on his show as everyone else involved.

However as this is about where Jackie is in all of this, well she’s doing her usual hide away stunt to let Kyle take the heat for the event (as she is soooo good at doing).

As for if and when K&J are back on air, well I as hell hope their never get back on, or if they do they will probably have to create their own radio station.  Luckily for the majority of us, these two have now become a potato too hot to handle for any station, and that included 2DAYFM.  So luckily for us we will hopefully never have to hear his or her voice ever again.

As for us ignorant lowlifes destroying the great career/s of a great and wonderful man, well he did that himself.  Any person is capable of doing decent acts, but that does not make him or his show great and wonderful There are plenty of other shows and presenters out there who do that all the time without falling to the depths that these two people have.

However I shall now leave you all with a very simple statement: “You are only as great as the lowest act you have ever done”

What is being forgotten here is sthat their show is one of the highest rating shows in the country and people have the option to listen or not, obviously most people do. The boycotting of sponsors and advertisers over a radio show where this segment has been running for eight or nine years I find hilarious. Yes Kyle’s pathetic comment drew more attention to him, but they both agreed to run the segment and are just as guilty for interrogating a 14 year old girl about her sexual experiences despite her obvious discomfort. Jackie should not get away with this either, it is not the first time she has been involved in a deplorable stunt such as this either, so she does not deserve any more chances. Neither Kyle nor Jackie should be on air where they can be role models for their young audience. I think we should all boycott Jackie O, Kyle and any company’s affiliated with them. Let that be a lesson to them and other ‘celebs’ toeing the moral line in an attempt to get ratings

johnv, your comment is rather ignorant and childish. So lets get this straight, if one does not agree with your opinion does that nessescerely mean that they are part of the said industry, NO it means your opinion is not the only one.

THIS ISNT ABOUT KYLE NOR JACKIE O. This is about themother who exploited her daughter for money on a radio stunt. And to the mother - you do not deserve to have the title of being a mum.  As far as im concerned, Kyle & Jackie O are air heads anyway.

This is about the pair of them and the people that run the station and the mother who should all know better than bullying a under aged child stapped to a lie detector and do you think that the subject of sex and drugs would not come up, there should have been a prerequisite to exclude to even mention them so they will have to live with it I dont think the cops would be allowed to such a thing?????

All the people posting negative stuff here are unbelievable. Can you really say its all their fault and they should be sacked over this petty insignificant incident? I couldn’t care less what one family amongst billions in our world are going through. People get raped… people are dieing of world hunger and there is a war going on. Countries are testing nuclear bombs against the UN’s wishes. Can you just see how petty and insignificant this is? It is as if they actually physically raped the girl themselves according to the responses i am seeing. Get real, they aren’t in the wrong and stop letting the hateful propaganda and your general dislike for Kyle and Jackie O cloud your judgment of this one incident, it isn’t their fault at all, the only thing out of line was a tactless reply by Kyle which really washes over me like water on a ducks back.

These two idiots should have been taken off the radio years ago. It would make me so happy to never see or hear from either of them ever again.
      Fingers crossed!!

The whole bad cop, good cop routine. I am amazed that Jackie O is reasonably unscathed by this PR nightmare. As I said on another forum, she basically rides on the coat tails of her co-hosts (her husband Ugly Phil before Kyle) but never takes the fall if anything goes wrong. At the end of the day however, I do believe that there also should have been more focus on the mother.

So Kurt you’re saying no one should worry about individual suffering only the bigger picture issues? One person’s suffering is acceptable while we knash our teeth at the fate of millions or something?
The fault for this sordid episode is a collective one:
The mother’s parenting skills are clearly deficient and she has clearly bought our society’s obsession with celebrity.
The radio station are clearly at fault - what else are producers etc for if not to make some call about the guests.
As has been fairly pointed out, people in Sydney have been listening to this drivel for years and to similar tawdry and miserable episodes. I think it says much more derogatory things about the tastes of the hundred of thousands of people who tune into this stuff everyday. What do they think??
It is hardly surprising that Jackie O has got away untouched and illustrates the double edged sword of being a woman celebrity. Many people would assume that because she is very attractive etc she is also not making much an intellectual (if you can all it that) behind the scenes. This is obviously a double edged sword. I haven’t heard too many feministas writing in to demand their right to public opprobrium but there you go.
