This is, er, gold. Convicted killer and drug dealer Carl Williams - the crim who used to knock about in tracksuits - is being buried in a gold-plated coffin. There’s full coverage of the funeral here.

Williams' casket arrives for the funeral

We can safely assume he’s not on one of those complete funeral packages advertised by earnest middle-aged people on daytime TV. Your sudden death as a result of an encounter with some exercise equipment could leave your family struggling to pay the bills. For as little as $1.50 a week you can have all the costs of your funeral covered, and for just 50c extra a week, we’ll throw in a comically gangsta gold coffin.

What has happened to this guy’s assets? What has been seized? And how much of his drug money is still sitting in a bank?

What next, a national public holiday? Seriously this is like a three ring circus. Good questions Colgo. Where is all that dirty money? Who’s footing the bill for this grub to be buried in a gold plated coffin? Honestly, I’m sick of waking up every morning and having that knuckle dragging, gutter crawling, Roberta Williams mug splashed everywhere. It’s nauseating….

@ Nicole, yes, i’m tired of hearing about them too. The “ninemsn” “too much publicity” question of the day results will be interesting reading tomorrow morning.

@ Colgo, also agree about your excellent questions. Perhaps we could have another power point slide show about whether the war on drugs is also being won?

Regards the former snag & swinging voter.

      1. If gold is ever worth $10000/ounce I know where I’ll be goin a prospectin’

      2. Burying bogans in gold coffins should be illegal.  I mean if our civilization collapses and a new one emerges in 1000 years their archaologists will think these losers were pharoahs or something equivalent.

How sad, we ALL know who Carl Williams was, how many of us can name the Australian doctor who won a Nobel prize last year for medical research? ?

    • shabangabang says:

      12:42pm | 30/04/10

With Williams now underground can we stop paying for the witness protection several people requested when they testified against him?

    • Julie Coker-Godson says:

      01:13pm | 30/04/10

Probably not, shabangabang, there are probably more people they need to be protected from, not just Williams.  He wasn’t in this business alone and grudges go all the way down the line it would seem, if you take into account all the previous murders.

    • Anthony says:

      03:35pm | 30/04/10

      Didn’t work for Williams.

    • Ally says:

      12:43pm | 30/04/10

Carl Williams was a Catholic… does that mean other Catholics (or indeed other Christians) think he is going to Heaven or Hell (or somewhere in between)? I’m really interested to know!

    • Nathan says:

      01:09pm | 30/04/10

He confessed to his sins and was sorry for all of them. He did seek repentance. He also believes the Lord died for his sins so naturally, he goes to Heavan.

    • Ally says:

      01:57pm | 30/04/10

Wow Nathan… lucky Carl! As a Christian, what do you have to do to go to Hell these days?

    • Matt says:

      04:21pm | 30/04/10

And you know that how Nathan?  There were no news feeds about him confessing his sins..  You can’t lead a people-killing, drug smuggling, chaotic life, repent on your death bed and still expect to get into heaven… It’s not a get-out-of-gaol-free card.  Doesn’t work that way mate..  We won’t know, but my guess is he’s going on the down side of the escalator.

    • Rose says:

      06:15pm | 30/04/10

As a Catholic I am fully aware that that is absolutely none of my business! That is between him and God, but I do know that for repentence to count it has to be real, 100% heartfelt and it must also carry with it penance, a real effort to make amends. So if his new found conscience was genuine who knows, maybe he made it to Heaven,  but if he was just paying lip service to his remorse, not a chance would he escape eternal damnation. If I was a gambling person though, I know which option I would bet on, and it has nothing to do with Pearly Gates!!

    • jess says:

      10:04pm | 01/05/10

Its a good question but we do not choose where people go when their dead. its all in GOD’s hand. It’s up to GOD to judge Carl Williams.

    • Ally says:

      10:04pm | 01/05/10

Rose: When he was alive, Carl Williams was given a punishment of 35 years in prison for his crimes. Don’t you think that eternal damnation after his death is an overly harsh punishment (not to mention that non-believers will also get the same punishment)?

    • Gloria says:

The death & funeral of this murderous criminal in being treated like a celebrity event. TV show Underbelly glorifies him & his ilk. Meanwhile, a football club, who has rorted & cheated, is being vilified & crucified. We Aussies certainly are a weird mob. No, I am not a Melbourne Storm supporter, I am a Roosters fan, god help me.

I am a human rights activist for every person around the world, including convicted criminals. However, all this media hoop-la over Carl Williams makes my job more difficult. The unnecessary media coverage over Williams and his gold coffin is an insult to decency and will only ignite anger, rage and hatred, which then creates further violence in an already violent society.

The casket is just for show. He is later removed from it and buried in a normal casket or cremated. These gold plated caskets are NOT what they get buried in or imagine the grave robbers digging them up at night.

Other recent gansters from Melbourne have used the same gold plated caskets to show continued power for the group. It is merely a status thing and show of strength to rivals, police, media etc.

I know for a fact they dont actually bury in these. You will note when they do place them in the ground the burial staff do not fill in over them. They wait until people go and the exchange is done or on occassion the casket is empty already and the body will be in the real burial casket at the funeral parlour waiting .
