Speaker of the House of Representatives Harry Jenkins is a bit of a Punch Question Time Live favourite, with his school master tone and ever-developing sense of humour.

Order! I'd just like to thank the Leader of the Opposition…

And now he has a new fan - Opposition Leader Tony Abbott. It was reported yesterday Julia Gillard couldn’t get away from Jenkins fast enough when he bailed her up in Aussies Cafe at Parliament House.

She seems more keen to indulge the increasingly lofty ambitions of Independent Rob “this isn’t about some out-of-control ego” Oakeshott , which must be driving Jenkins a bit mad. According to Gillard, Oakeshott has the “skills and attributes” necessary for the tricky parliamentary role. But this morning Abbott backed up the Labor stalwart.

On 3AW Abbott said:

I’ve always said that I wanted to move towards a Westminster-style of Speakership and the best way to bring that about would be for Harry Jenkins to continue in the Chair, to remove himself from party meetings and not to be contested at general elections.

It’s important to ensure that the current Parliament is workable and given the closeness of the numbers, we agreed to [the pairing] arrangement because it was a way of allowing the government to appoint a Speaker or allowing a Speaker to be appointed, possibly from the government ranks, without making the government’s task impossible. So, that’s why we supported the arrangement. But it all gets vastly more complicated if an Independent is in the Chair because how do you pair an Independent? That becomes very, very difficult.

So Jenkins could be the in bizarre position of relying on the Coalition to save his cushy job, while his own leader appears prepared to hang him out to dry.

Well Oakeshott isn’t aloud to speak in his own electorate, so he may as well run off to Canberra and be a speaker. He was supposed to be holding a community forum in Port Macquarie last night had tocancell it because the 200 questions submitted to be asked by the public were all too hostile towards him. He may be popular with Gillard but he ain’t popular at home!

The event was cancelled, as most of us already know, because of threats of violence, nothing more or less.

Well done, Port. Very mature. Very democratic.

Julie is a troll and a fraud.

Fairs fair - Wrong, that was a beat up by the local paper, untrue. It was as Julieofportmacq said because of hostile questions, not threats of violence as you have mistakingly said. Oakeshott himself came out and said he recieved no threats of violence.

      Oh really.

      The Australian today says

“Mr Oakeshott was to appear at the event, “An Audience with Rob Oakeshott”, tonight in his home town on the NSW mid-north coast but it was postponed because of a series of threats fielded by a local newspaper.

The newspaper organising the event, the Port Macquarie News, postponed the forum yesterday, citing safety concerns.

The newspaper’s general manager, Janine Buesnel, said it had become apparent that “there are some people who plan to use the night as a chance to vent their rage at Mr Oakeshott”.

Threatening telephone calls were also fielded by staff at the forum’s proposed venue, the Port Macquarie Panthers.”

JulieofPortMacq.  :  Quite right Julie , Oakshott is on the nose with his largely conservative electorate , and he is on the nose with the rest of conservative voters in Australia . Once Oakshott realised the Speaker’s position carried a $238,000 Salary , staff of three , lavish offices and an entertainment account , he changed his mind on Gillard’s offer of a position.
Now he is in her pocket and rewarded for his turncoat tactics.
      At our expense of course.
Harry Jenkins should remain as Speaker because he was accepted by both sides of the House.

      @Nuff Said,

Don’t beleive everything you read in the paper!
Rob Oakeshott has a team of friendlies at Port News and they are being exposed for what they are! Oakeshott himself as admitted that there was no threat to him! The event was cancelled because they couldn’t find a Dorothy Dixer among the 300+ questions submitted.

I’ve had 2 failed attempts at informing this debate, how about this time I simply provide the punch “journalists” with a couple of hints:

Look at the composure of the boards of a local Port Macquarie surf club & rugby club. Compare that list to local Independent members & candidates in upcoming state election & also management of local papers.

I won’t say any further for fear of further censorship!

I feel a bit sorry for Jenkins. Sure his responses can be a bit droll, but to be removed from the role after just a few years, I think he could feel personally agrieved regarding JG’s position

I like Harry and if he were to go, QT just wouldn’t be the same. I heard Oakeshott on Sky News earlier on and he was having a major tantrum over Abbott backing Harry. Thank God they cut him off, it was painful. I think he’ll have trouble finding his dummy though. He sure did spit it.

    • BarbaraT says:

Maybe that’s how their attracting him to the role.  He thinks the ‘Speaker’ in the job title means he gets to speak all the time.  Something he just loves to do.

So the real story here appears to be Abbott trying to do a “back-flip” on parliamentary reform yet for some reason were overlooking that and writing some witty opinion piece on pretty much nothing.

      Quality stuff Tory.

    • TimB says:

      03:56pm | 17/09/10

How is it a backflip? The whole point of that reform was to allow the Government to appoint a speaker from its own party without sacrificing a vote advantage.
If Labor appoints one from the crossbench then they aren’t disadvantaged in numbers, so there is absolutely zero reason for Tony to give up one of his own votes.

    • MDMConnell says:

      06:17pm | 17/09/10

TimB’s right on the money. Labor backing Oakshott would mean that it doesn’t have to give up one of its own MPs but forces the Coalition to give up one of theirs. How is that in the spirit of “reforming Parliament” and “holding the government more accountable”?

Ditto giving the Speaker a deliberative vote. How is giving a government one extra vote than they had before “making the government more accountable”?

There was a theory going around that Oakeshott was always going to support Labor and was deliberately trying to make things difficult for the Coalition in Opposition with these reforms. I dunno how true that is, but giving the Labor party all these extra boosts in a close Parliament sure isn’t doing much to dispel the idea.

    • Kelvin says:

I they make Oakeshott the speaker he should really be paired with a fellow independent like Tony Windsor - not a member of theCoalition so as to give her highness yet another free kick in front of goal.

Both oakeshot and Windsor have already had too much to say in this parliament so taking them both out of play would be a good result.

Why waste a political vote or a diminished electoral representative on the speaker,s position, get an ex referee from world cup soccer, or a retired A.F.L. Umpire, Harry Beitzel comes to mind,or how about Dickie Bird or Darrell Hair, pollies could be called as chuckers or off-side,no balled or sent to the very appropriate sin-bin. Come on Aussies political reform is possible.

    • Likely Unquite says:

On reflection I,m abandoning the call for umpires, give the job to the Governor General, this works because kingmaker Shorten has to obey his mum in law and Abbott being a staunch monarchist will of course respect the Queens appointment. What are the speaker,s other responsibilities anyway, raffles, bingo or karaoke nights.

First Oakeshott toys with taking a ministry, then the speakership.  A cynical view would be to suggest he’s just after a whopping great pay rise for what is likely to be his final 3 years in parliament.  Frankly he should have been told to get back in his box weeks ago.  Whatever the nation voted for it wasn’t for him to exercise absolute power.

      Save Harry!

    • E says:

QT will not be the same without Harry - he carries an air of humour and tolerable authority when it comes to parliamentary disorder.  With Oakeshott as speaker, well, he might start to talk, and talk and talk some more… without ever getting to an actual point. It’s unbelievable that Julia’s not supporting Harry in this. Absolutely unbelievable.

    • Maurie says:

      05:17pm | 17/09/10

There’s a little ol’ book called the Constitution - that clearly states that the Speaker of the House does NOT have a deliberative vote, only a casting vote.

As a result, it is unconstitutional (ie against the highest law of the land) for Oakeshott to vote (or be paired).  This is irrespective of what our elected MPs might agree to.  If Oakeshott wants to be Speaker, let him argue the case at a referendum.

The comments on this topic are hilarious!  The Coalition supporters need to understand that Oakeshott is just another card in Julia’s hand, and why shouldn’t she play it? Oakeshott as speaker will drive Abbott completely insane - GOOD STUFF !!!

    • Ben in Canberra says:

      09:54am | 18/09/10

Gillard’s MO in supporting Oakeshott in the Speakers role is extremely simple. If he is there, then he WILL NOT cross the floor. She then shores up her government for a much longer period of time, with Abbott relying on Windsor to cross the floor as well as either Bandt (unlikely) or a Labor member (yeah right) to block legislation. “It’s the ‘Parliament’ stupid”.

    • Joan says:

      10:05am | 18/09/10

This Speaker issue is dragging on unnecessarily…. it is either an independent or Harry Jenkins… Is Gillard going to take 2 weeks hum- haaing about this?

    • len says:

      11:17am | 18/09/10

So, have I got this right? Oakeshott is appointed speaker but he has a doubtfull pair. Harry gets the job and gets Bronwyn Bishop as his pair. That means that Harry has a male pair and Bronny has a female pair. This must mean that between them they dont have a perfect pair.  Okay. So that doesn’t work. Moving forward, Oaky gets paired with Tony Abbott, and we all know that he has a pair…courtesy the Budgie smugglers, Presuming Oaky does have a pair, that makes, in poker parlance, two pairs. But wait, two pairs will always be beaten by a full hand! This could get messy. Let’s go back to the electorate.

Harry Jenkins is a crappy Speaker. But for pure entertainment value he is GOLD!

It’s a double-edged sword: his bias and inability to control the schoolyard antics during QT makes one scream for an independent Speaker, but his frustration and “Harryisms” provide great amusement.

There cannot be a Speaker from the parliament who is truly independent and denying party room access and voting rights also betrays the constituents from his/her electorate.

My preferred option has always been an ex judge who’s reputation has always relied upon being impartial and also controlling an unruly courtroom.

If both sides of politics are genuine in their wish for independence of the Speaker, this is the only option available and one they should be prosecuting.

Seriously though. That is the whole problem with such a proposal - how on earth could a good ‘un get “impartially” picked from such a skewed set to start with?

Look at ‘em.  Barwick, Kerr, Einfield, just to start with. Bloody rogues, all. And if two of ‘em are now safely well dead, the now disgraced survivor was only caught out loooong after his own retirement.

And then,  who would do the picking?

Nup. Won’t do, at all, at all.

Folks, I reckon we are just starting to scrape the tip of the iceberg with Oakeschott and his “loooke at mue..loooke at mue” persona.

Gillard and Abbott will have to keep an eye and make sure this pompous and egotistical pollie does not become the centre of attention whenever either side does not agree with the Gospel accoring to Rob!

    • T.C. says:

      12:21pm | 19/09/10
