Update 5.15pm: Tony Abbott has just held a press conference where he said he and Nick Minchin have told Malcolm Turnbull the CPRS Bill should be delayed until next year. “Malcolm was unprepared to reconsider,” Mr Abbott said. He then confirmed he would quit the shadow cabinet. “This is a very difficult decision for me.” He also said: “This isn’t a leadership issue at all, it is a policy issue.” He refused to confirm or deny there have been any discussions about a leadership challenge with his colleagues. “I don’t know what might happen in the next few days.”

Challenger? Tony Abbott in Canberra yesterday.

Speculation is rife Tony Abbott is considering quitting the front bench in the next 24 hours, and could be preparing to make a tilt at knocking off Malcolm Turnbull from his precarious leadership perch.

What this would achieve for the Liberals, or for voters, is very unclear. While the Coalition generally only thrives under a conservative leader, it’s impossible to see how that would happen under Abbott.

Many Coalition MPs are angry with Mr Turnbull, in large part for the way he conducted the party room meeting on Tuesday. But The Punch has been told senior Liberals are trying to talk Mr Abbott out of making a move. It’s not clear if their argument is for the good of the party, or the good of Mr Abbott.

The biggest problem the Coalition would have with Abbott at the helm at an election next year would be with women voters.

Abbott has some pretty hard line views on how much control women should have over their own bodies. He’s also got a troublesome tendency to save his most vicious political fights for his female counterparts.

A lot of women will find it hard to forget Mr Abbott swearing at the now health minister Nicola Roxon when she gave him a hard time for turning up late to a debate in the last election campaign.

Just a few weeks ago in Parliament he said Julia Gillard had a “shit eating grin.” It’s not very attractive behaviour to voters.

The Libs, under Malcolm Turnbull, are in a world of trouble. An Abbott spill this week wouldn’t go any of the way towards cleaning up the mess.

Women + all young people. Thats a significant amount of Australians. When are these ultra conservatives going to realise they do not respresent the views of the majority of Australians. It’s pretty hilarious that they think they can win.

I would vote for Abbott next election. Last Election I voted Rudd and i’ve feel suicidal ever since!

Maybe Abbott has what Australia needs but he will need to stop his smirking and whining voice

Tony is about 52 years old, about the same age as Rudd
      (a) He can have a crack now hopefully without Joe Hockey running
      (b) If he leaves it to next year or beyond, in this age of younger Western English speaking leaders..Cameron, Obama, Keys, Rudd and even back to Blair…..people will consider him as too old and past it.

What will it mean for the Lib ETS support if he gets up ?

      @Louis

He might not be trying to destroy Australia

But he seems like a person who will struggle to put Australia’s best interests ahead of his personal ideology or ambition.

He has been chopping and changing his position on the ETS seemingly to suit what most favors his political advancement.

Abbott would be a great leader who could be the conservative the party needs. Yes the media don’t like him and give him a very hard time but the general public don’t always share the press galleries biases. The public respect a man like Howard who actually stands for something.

So at 52, Abbott is the right age to challenge Rudd etc, but at 53, he’s too old?

Putting his conservative views and his problems with women to one side, the main problem Abbott has with regards the Liberal leadership or anything beyond that goes a little deeper.  He’s simply not up to it

Rudd has stuffed up more than Abbott. Rudd hasn’t actually even done anything good for the country in 2 years! And at least people know where Tony Abbott stands on issues and he’s very very straight forward, clear and understanding in what he says. Very unlike Rudd.

Not even Lazarus has the skills to resurect the Coalition to succesfully challenge the 2010 Election.

The 2013 tilt look like the next realistic opportunity for the Coalition to win an election. At that stage a then 48 year old Joe Hockey (currently 44) may look like a much more attractive leadership option than the then 56 year old Tony Abbott (currently 52)

I think Generation Y will be far less tolerent of ageing politicians than Gen X or the Baby Boomers were.

The issue is that the core supporters of the Liberal Party will desert the party in droves if the Liberals are responsible allowing the worst piece of legislation in the Nations history, the ETS, to pass the Senate. This legislation must be blocked as it will cripple the country. I will support any leader of the party who stands up and stops this madness and I can assure you that there are thousands like me. Anyway, what is the issue with having christian beliefs, does not the current PM sprout that he is in fact a conservative christian, I do not see the same ridicoulous statements regarding his views on women, yet he holds the same beliefs as Abbott, just another example of left win hypocrisy!

I am sure he would put the best thing for Australia first - those who question that I believe are closet bigots. Funny how Rudd does Church doorstops to re-inforce his Christian credentials yet no-one says anything yet TA suggests some counselling for young women pre-abortion and he is right of the Pope? Survery 100 women who have had an abortion and ask their opinion of that idea?? I reckon you would see he was right on.

Last Thursday Nov 19 on his Daily Telegraph blog (read it yourself) headed “Rudd, take us seriously on ETS” Abbott stated “If the Rudd Government really wants its emissions trading scheme passed next week, it must take the Opposition’s amendments seriously”

Well Tony, Rudd did take you seriously & Ian Macfarlane brilliantly negotiated many concessions for the opposition.

So you supported the ETS (far more stringent than Rudds) when Howard took it to the 2007 election claiming “We have established a committee which recommended the introduction of an ETS. And work is well underway to introduce that by 2011. It will be the most comprehensive ETS anywhere in the world.”

Or was this just another Liberal lie?

    • Johnno says:

      04:20pm | 26/11/09

To many on the Liberal party back benches this may make sense.

They have forfeited the next election, something obvious to even the most casual observer. Abbot would would serve as a nightwatchman who can help pull the party back to the right from its perceived drift to the left under Turnbull.

Abbott would then be predictably rolled after the election loss and the new leader, say Hockey, could get the nod. Hockey would be able to move away from the more extreme views of Abbott while retaining the broad shift back to the right.

I think, from many Liberals perspective, Hockey at the moment is way too wet to be able to take over from the positively saturated Turnbull, but may be welcomed after a dose of the Mad Monk.

And while I agree Abbott may have a problem attracting women voters due to his views on abortion etc., I’m not too sure he goes after women members of the Labor party any harder than the men. It’s just that he’s been paired with them, as part of good strategy by the other side.

Abbott will make a great leader, for the reasons many of you have already put forth.  He is a man of conviction and substance, whereas Rudd is a chameleon, changing to suit the circumstance at the time.  Rudd is good at two things - appeasing those who might cause him discomfort and grovelling to the taxpayer by way of handing out free stuff.  He does it over and over again.  I believe the Libs CAN win the next election if they choose a strong leader and hammer the opposition on many fronts.  Rudd lies with monotonous regularity, he gave in to hijackers on our Customs vessel, he makes promises and delivers on almost none of them, and he is sending this country bankrupt.  He has no spine, but lots of spin.  It is time someone took the fight up to him and Abbott is the man for the job.
