Now that the furrowed brow has finally vanished off of my face, I’ve calmed down after being wound up by the revelation that an Under-20’s league team were indeed being trained by a former “porn-fetish” star.

Fellas, you need muscles ok… Kortney Olson

The irritation wasn’t so much the fact that these young men were being trained by someone who possesses a set of photos under her bed that could rival the images on RedTube, but instead I was more cheesed off that there were calls from some of the local Queensland community to ban her from any further club involvement.

I’m all too happy to admit I thrive on a tabloid sporting sex scandal like most, and it appeared somewhat welcoming reading over my morning latte, that is up until I’d gotten past the enthralling headline to the facts. Mrs Kortney Olson, wife of Gold Coast Titans CEO David May, once upon a time flirted with cinematic photography in the explicit variety.

The weak argument from some was that Olson was not the ideal representation of women in league, but I’m more led to believe that a few simply hated the fact a woman was training young men, (insert Campese related joke here).

Fortunately for the club and Olson, she is only a volunteer and doesn’t breach any of the NRL’s code of conduct, and will continue on advise the youths on how they may someday grow bigger biceps than her.

This whole debacle has sparked my thoughts on our tolerance to those rare few who choose to live outside of the often regarded “vanilla” lifestyle.

I’m reminded of a few years back when All Black Byron Kelleher, a scrum-half with 57 caps to his name, announced to his religious sporting nation that he was in fact in love and living with American X-rated Porn Star Kaylani Lei, who boasted her own accolades, one in particular for winning the 2010 American adult video award for “Best Group Sex Scene”.

The overall public reaction to this relationship was pretty much a big high five, with former South African Springbok James Small citing he wanted to personally shake Kelleher’s hand, saying, “If he can satisfy a woman who has performed in 88 porn movies, he must be a legend.”

Other insights from rugby greats also included then All Black coach Sir Graham Henry saying he wasn’t fussed with a porn star being linked to his team.

“He has been open and honest with the media about his personal life and is firmly focused on rugby.”

But alas, all good athlete and porn star relationships must come to and end and it wasn’t long until Ms Lei realised living in the country town of Hamilton was a far cry from the Vegas lifestyle she was once accustomed too.

Now I’m not calling for us all to run out to our next local swingers party or fiddle with ourselves in front of a webcam but Australia could certainly learn a few tolerance tips from those across the ditch.

Recently charged with offensive behaviour, Andrew Pointon, a 47-year old New Zealander who took up the hobby of only running in a pair of shoes, was found innocent over the weekend and celebrated like any respected nudist would, partaking in some nude boogie boarding at his local beach.

In what I’m sure was a case that brought many a wry smile to the courtroom, Pointon’s lawyer Michael Bott said his client not being reprimanded was simply a matter of common sense.

“It’s a perfectly sensible decision,” Bott said. “What it points to is the growing tolerance in New Zealand of diverse lifestyles and freedom of expression,” he said.

I say it’s time for Australia’s tolerance for difference to finally run (nude) free.

Don’t think those young men would mind it one bit to have a trainer like that. In fact they would probably train harder for fear she would take her riding crop to their young asses if they slacked off.

Spot on Hayley, it is none of their business. However, in the end it is just the norm in society today. Those calling for her banning are no different from the army of puritans pushing their barrows on everything from banning drugs, stopping people smoking, complaining about schoolies and the list goes on; forcing people to wear helmets riding a bike;  greenies making peoples’ lives miserable with wind turbines in their backyards; opposing gay marriage; proposals to censor the internet. A million and one regulations and laws and a tonne of chatter designed to correct what they see as other people’s vices and armies of enforcers chipping away for their own favourite obsession. They really are all the same at the end of the day. They just cannot leave people alone to live their lives as they see fit.

+1 hear hear… I am so fed up with the calls to ban things and create new laws day in day out. If people are aware that something has the potential to hurt them (e.g. smoking or not wearing a seat belt) and choose to do it anyway then that is their choice!

Politicians need to start worrying about building infrastructure and providing services rather than telling people what to do, and those perpetually offended and outraged wowsers need to accept that there are people who choose note to have kids and the white picket fence who should have the same freedoms to do what they want.

Firstly, QLD is the deep north, so not surprised to hear rediculously conservative calls from parts of the community.

Secondly, done fitness training as part of an amateur rugby team with a woman trainer, noone gives a toss, most of just trying to through the session as our fitness levels were far from elite.

Thirdly, where do I get this video(s)?  grin

Oh, for us to become like the Firefly universe, where courtesans are respected (and even feared) as high-quality escorts and agents, where interfering with one in a way they didn’t appreciate was career (if not actual) suicide.

The only reason the sex industry has poor status is because we’ve forced it underground, largely due to the influence of religion.  I think the world would be a far more tolerant place if the sex industry was seen without prejudice.  Just think of all the lesser sexual tension in the world.

    • Anne71 says:

      12:48pm | 04/12/12

You don’t even have to venture to the Firefly universe to see that, Mahhrat. Madame Pompadour, mistress of King Louis XV of France, became so powerful a force behind the throne that she was basically Prime Minister in everything but name. If anybody wanted favours from the King they had to approach her first.

Well the Women in League impetus with training of these young fellows as respectful gentlemen has plenty of theory. A bit of the practical will go a long way. Some might even be kept in after training.

Whatever, but is Ned Kelly invited to do posthumus workshops on bank security.

I tend to favour those with the inner knowledge. Beats reporters with no playing experience as per the rah rahs. I think the bona fides are important

We have others with inside knowledge of slush funds, which carries weight when developing budgets.

They are all women. Women lead the field these days in qualifications, regardless of 1950s ideals where integrity was at the fore. That’s I—N—T—E—G—R—I—T—Y Not in the Macquarie dictionary any more, but was a quaint saying before women took over the work force and politics.

Turns out we are a bunch of stitched up prudes after all.

    • Loxy says:

      01:38pm | 04/12/12

Hayley, like you I couldn’t care less about this women’s past. However, if you want to make a solid case you don’t do it by leaving out one of the most significant facts of this case – that Olsen was a hard-core junkie and has only been sober for less than 2 years.

While I don’t agree with those objecting, we aren’t talking about working with adults here; we are talking about working with young, impressionable teenage boys, many of whom would still be under the responsibility of their parents. It’s not rocket science, nor completely unreasonable, to work out that parents may have some reservations about a former drug addict, porn star interacting with their kids.

    • Rob says:

      01:40pm | 04/12/12

She has to be a role model like the guys. The New Zealand gal in the group sex scence with Cronulla players was a victim. If this delight was involved in group sex for which she got an award how come there is no victim - a bloke may have been the victim.

Then again I missed the point of your story. That being there are different rules for women and men. Sorry I was slow on the uptake.

I’ve lived in Australia from birth (ten generations) so should know better.

    • TheRealDave says:

Why do my spidey senses tell me that all of the alledged ‘outrage’ came from women and none of the players themselves? Or from a hen-pecked husband forced to make a complaint by his outraged missus??

Secondly - if its OK for former fetish porn star junkies to train young blokes in sport , in a volunatry capacity, then I assume that its OK for ...ohh…lets say Wayne Carey to be a volunteer Marriage Guidance Counsellor?

    • Jay2 says:

I wonder if an ex porn star male junkie was training teenage upward daughters that all the “yeehaaa’ men & Fathers/Brothers etc would be going “Oh don’t be a bunch of prudes”  I somehow think not!

Anyway, my personal feeling is that yes it was her past life and what she chose to do as a consenting adult is her business BUT in reality, sometimes that does effect the career choices of the future.
