Whilst I am somewhat disappointed that the Aussies haven’t done better as a new resident of London I am very pleased that the games have been an overwhelming success. I don’t even mind the good natured ribbing I get from strangers 3 or 4 times a day. It’s far better than being surrounded by dour whingers…

      Olympic Sized Hypocrisy!
Martin Feruson calling for the states to privatise electricty. Is this the same Martin Ferguson, top union man, friend of the working class? Did he hold this view when he was president of the ACTU?
The people in this government amaze me, so many backflips, so much dropping of fervently held positions. No principles at all.

Just proves how full of shit trade union leaders are and how much they abuse and despise the very members who pay their salaries.

Worked last night, up late today.
You are correct, ronny jonny, about Ferguson changing his view. No-one, and I mean no-one, should ever be allowed to change their mind.
What a perceptive fellow you are, and I ‘dips me lid’ to you.
However you forgot to mention a certain person who took an oath to oppose a woman’s right to decide on matters concerning her own body, the use of any form of contraception, divorce, equal rights for women, any attack on the infallibility of the other German dictator, the so called representative of St. Peter here on Earth, and the protector of all “good catholics”, (yes, including, or especially, the paedophiles), and all manner of things contrary to the wealth-gathering habits of the most heinous, the most evil, and the most corrupt organisation on the face of the planet.
Perhaps all of that just slipped your mind, ronny, as did Howard’s flip over the GST. Not surprised really, little ronny. Small matter, small mind.

The Australian Institute of Criminology released findings that ecstasy use was decreasing because it was considered by users to be lower in quality and harder to obtain than previous. The report said decline in ecstasy use coincides with an increase in methamphetamine use, which is generally considered to be the more harmful and addictive of the two.  Although it is dangerous to extrapolate a conclusion from the coincidence, it stands to reason that if reasonably-priced quality MDMA is available, many users will switch back.

      Hi Punch Team,

All good things must come to end eventually, so they say! There is always such a great excitement leading up to any event such as the Olympics, with everyone filled with the best of expectations for their countries. The middle parts are very testing, trying and bitter sweet for most players.  The actual endings can leave most of us a bit disappointed and envious of other teams.  There is always such a great amount of hype and excitement surrounding the Olympic media coverage reporting all around the world instantly, especially for the ones who could not afford to get London.

Somehow as always and for me personally, the Olympic Games are not about wining or losing but how we all play the game, right. If we apply all that knowledge and wisdom to real life, then the message can be crystal clear.  In life there are no guarantees as usual and we just have to give it our best shot.  Even when the end results are less than perfect and the expected, we just have to be happy for other winning teams and let them enjoy their moment of true glory.

And the losing teams should equally all rise above the feelings of failure, disappointment and try again!  A bit like Aaliyah’s great song from the movie “Romeo must Die”.  I am certain that the rest will be a part of great Olympic Hall of Fame and History including the special moments will always be remembered by everyone for a long to come.  Kind regards to your editors.

We are losing people on Punch!  Fairsfair has gone, Scotchie has disappeared and a couple of other regulars are no longer around.  Punch, what have you done with them, we want them back!!!  We are now getting evil twins and doppelgangers that harass and badger their good counterparts. We don’t want them. What is going on?
Now, I am not blaming the carbon tax, BUT I don’t believe in coincidence either!! Damn you gillard, you and your party, you are evil….........

I’ve barely watched it at all, I could only get through about a half hour of the opening ceremony. So now I feel like watching something, the soccer final, but it’s on at 11:50pm! They might repeat it tomorrow but that means I’d have to have a media blackout so I won’t know the score and I’ll probably forget.

      Life sucks.

Is it just me or have these games gone really fast?  Perhaps because for the first week all that was on was swimming so it feels like they only just started?

    • Zoe says:

      04:31pm | 12/08/12

Agree, Im sure there must be more than just swimming in the first week, its just that all we get is swimming and repeats of the swimming.
This is why it looked like we werent doing very well. Our other athletes have done pretty well. considering theres a lot more competition in some of the other sports.

Looks like the Tasmanian and Australian Governments are looking at another dunce’s award, although I have also heard nothing from the opposition on this matter.  We must be unanimously stupid, I guess.

A Dutch (Euro subsidised, no less) super trawler is heading Tasmania’s way and whilst working around our great coast is going to be protected and supervised by a 1 person band of Australian Fishing “super public servant”.  This supeman is going to scrutinise the “catch” and operation of this mammoth vessel, day and night, 24 hours.  He is indeed a man amongst men.

I can just see “super public servant” waving the yellow card at 40 hairy arsed seamen that are relying on the catch size for their bonus.  He will be skulking in his cabin with a TV and afew videos before the ship leaves Hobart.

      Here we have a heavily subsidised European super trawler;
      -  That the “Australian” charterer is very hazy about with regard to the arrangements.
      -  That and similar ships have been tossed out of Africa for overfishing (lying through their teeth)
      -  Similar ships have been tossed out of New Zealand for lying through their teeth.

By the by 1: they had a “super public servant” on board, as well

When o when are the various Australian Governments going to forget things like “Gay Marriage” being a priority and think about Australia, Australians and important Australian issues for the benefit of Australians.  This ship is going to rape Australia as it, and others like it, have done in other countries.  Minister, look at the records?

I am sure the charterer will employ a few token Australians to help out and he will fly the “I’m doing this for Australian jobs” argument.  Hopefully, we are just, just a little, smarter than to be taken in by this.

Do not fall for the rubbish that this boat is Australian.  It will be “bareboat chartered” only, which puts some ownership responsibilities on the Charterer only however he/she is NOT and never will be the owner until he buys it, with real money..  This charterer is telling ½ truths and exaggerations, I would think.

While I’m on the subject of a stupid Australia.  Last week an illegal immigrant boat gave a distress call while in Indonesian waters.  We then went along and “rescued” it and subsequently accepted responsibility.  How dumb and stupid are we??  When will it end??  An election, I guess.  But is Abbott the best choice??  I do not think so.

If you want to understand a little about the power price issue in NSW, you should:
      -  Read, as best you can, the latest NSW Electricity Network and Prices Inquiry
      -  Read the Residential Customer Price List produced by Energy Australia
      -  Ask you local member why the NSW Government (Labor and Liberal alike) taxes electricity so much, and then calls it a dividend, and also ask why do they tax by stealth and not honestly and publically.  If he/she (the pllie) does not duck and dive and answers honestly, vote for them next time.

Australia is cursed by having a very low quality of politician at the moment.  At least they have their pay rise.

    • Mike says:

      11:24am | 12/08/12

Don’t worry.  Australia didn’t really miss out on gold medals because the gold medal is actually made up of 92.5% silver and 1.34% gold, with the remainder being copper (there must be a minimum of 6g of gold).

      http://www.london2012.com/medals/about/

So if Australia really feels THAT bad about winning silver, then they can just go and plate them with gold for some instant bling.  Just like a bogan would with their “me too” attitude.

Take heart, and maybe the next four years will help Australia to grow up and get a more mature attitude towards not only winning, but also embracing how to lose gracefully.

Am I going mad or are the references here, and in the proffered links, (I didn’t read them), actually all about the expert’s opinions on the “Winter” Olympics? Are there a separate Games going on for perhaps Pa Kelvin & Co, is there a ‘private games’ that only the priveliged few know about, is it an attempt to win medals because no-one else turned up.

    • ronny jonny says:

      01:49pm | 12/08/12

I was watching Stephen Frys show the other night and apparently it would only cost 1.35 million pounds to have all the gold medals actually made from gold. Why do they not do this? Strikes me as a bit cheap and nasty considering the obscene amount of money the IOC rakes in.

    • sunny says:

      04:36pm | 12/08/12

Of all the athletes who win gold I reckon about half of them bite their medal to see if it’s real.

    • Mike says:

      05:07pm | 12/08/12

Vox, my link was a handy foil to the sarcastic jibe I levelled at the way Australia has decided the only way it can beat Team GB in the London 2012 olympics (hence, official site) is on the number of silver medals won, and the way that people have said “oh, Silver’s almost just as good as gold”.

No, that’s why it’s called s-i-l-v-e-r and not g-o-l-d.  Maybe they should make a platinum medal for those who are REALLY good, and a Rhodium medal for those who can do the event blindfolded with their hands tied behind their back.

Last time I checked too, the Summer Olympics (to which I refer, because they have completely different sports and therefore, it is not a fair comparison) was a four year wait between drinks.  At least the World Cup and Winter Olympics are in the same years.

At least you didn’t do as per the Russians, and cry that somehow, the medal table had been doctored because of losing the boxing fair and square.

    • pa_kelvin says:
