It was a big news week. So here are a few of our best newsy reads from the week that was.

It was a good week for horseraces

      The week in looking at Friday as the end has ended on an as not so bright note for Aussie cricket followers as it did for Mitt Romney mid week.
      It does not look to be so bright a cricketing summer start and we might just start to hope for plenty of rain, a change in the weather pattern predicted some weeks back.

      Not much joy in watching might see better progression of plenty of home and garden projects.

      I watched the clip.  Again no plan just the one line rant about the carbon tax.  He couldn’t say anymore…it was like a stuck record.  He could not articulate what he would do to bring down electricity prices exceot rant about the CT.
      His whole premise that electricity prices have increased under Labor is deceitful.  Labor can take the blame for the CT rise but the states control electricity prices not the federal govt. 
      In WA Colon the Barbarian has increased electricity price around 60%  the CT impact was less than the GST on the price of electricity

      Talking about misogynists, I’m pleased the PM took the opportunity to take the Iranian President to task on the treatment of women in his country. Oh that’s right she refused to meet with him, so much for calling it out when she see’s it.

      Achmed and tell me when has Gillard answered any of the questions that have been asked to her. She does the same thing. This are pollies they will always stone wall. It is funny how you think Labor can do know wrong. Here is a bit of info for you. In the last two elections Labor has never put thier full costings into treasury.

      I lived most my life in WA and I can tell you Achmed that Labor ran that state to the ground. No vision at all and now Labor attack Barnett for wanting to modernise WA.

      Let me tell you some another robert, acotrel and Achmed. I have left the defecen force but under labor the morale and retention of members is at a all time low. Everytime we heard the govt was going to meet budget we knew that we would be the ones to have our budget stripped to bring the govt into surplus. Under labor live firing testing has gone from doing a full shoot to know only having to fire 10 rounds. Our Navy and Army have equipment out of date and also the Airforce is unable to get new aircraft till the F35 comes in. (Interesting enough Labor stated that this was a bad choice but once they came to power they changed thier tune and stated we are actually happy with the aircraft). Whilst the defence forces around the world upgrade thier rifles defence is still stuck with old rifles. The govt has no plans to replace these at all.

      Overall it is shaping up as a good weekend.

      As to “punching on” as it were. I am more than a bit disappointed with how quickly posting is closed off now days. I realise that posting cannot go on forever probably, because someone has to moderate what we punters post.

      I wonder would it be possible to at least maybe keep page one things open at the very least. Personally, due to real life, I can’t come here every day and trawl through everything here, as much as that might be fun from time to time. I must say though that by closing stories down that still appear very topical, current and relevant it does not encourage the concept of free speech all that much.

      Living In WA with the 3 hour time difference makes it difficult.  I am not one of those contributors who uses/abuses his bosses time and equipment to do my posting.  So I get a bit of time while I have my morning coffeee, and if I finish early enough about 15-30mins in the evening.
      Its a form of censorship

      I totally agree with you. Punch can cut short all the articles that encourages further division between the two major political parties and their supporters but such articles that matter very much in our society should get more air time. This article by Tory Shepherd is a classic and should be dealt with NOW for an OUTCOME so it is put to rest eternally.

      I live in WA as well and have the same problem.

      The Punch does this, because they don’t have the staff to moderate the site 24/7.
      In addition to writing and sourcing copy, they require some time to themselves.
      I suggest that weekend moderating is very sporadic and is done when whoever is rostered on comes in from doing a bit of gardening or housework for a break. Moderating may be done from a cafe or from a cricket match when your side is batting and you are not.

      Thepunch doesn’t make any money and is more of a public service.
      Too bad it is most often a battleground for cyclops.

      I agree, oftentimes once I get home and have finished what I need to about the house, it’s after 8pm meaning I don’t get to respond where someone has responded to a comment of mine.

      Don’t know if they do it, but a filter that highlights potentially offensive material for moderation while allowing other comments through would be the best approach to reducing the moderation work.

      Unfortunately a ‘Report comment’ button (given what some of the posters are like) would result in an increased workload for the mods. Though perhaps it may work if in reporting a comment the user had to supply their email addy as they do when posting along with a reason for reporting.

      Sheesh Achmed, I hadn’t even begun to consider what other time zones may be inflicted with (as it were).

      I actually don’t get access (or rather have not tested if that would be acceptable) at all during my work hours. The mob I work for are somewhat full on with their apparent monitoring of computer use, their computers so I guess that is their business.

      So for me it comes down to if time permitting after I finish work. Of course, having said that, I do sometimes get to have a quick read (time permitting) on my phone - posting from that though is very limiting (pseudo witty one liners are about the extent of posting from phone).

      I agree that it is ultimately a form of censorship happening here, which is a real bummer, given that posting is also moderated which is a blatant form of censorship. And that comes from a forum that often cries long and loud about issues supposedly pertaining to;
      a) Freedom of the Press
      b) Freedom of Speech.

      Most definitely in that order too.

      Quite a few recent articles I would have enjoyed engaging in the debate on, but alas, my freedom of speech has now been time limited. I suppose I could complain to Alan Jones, but I am not convinced that he would listen….

      I loved the Royals being in town, such a calming effect it gave me. Very much needed after being forced to constantly watch the US Elections unfold to what resulted in a popularity contest instead of the best leader winning to take America out of the economic mess it has found itself in.

      Then it was no surprise that this incompetent to the max Gillard Labor Minority Govt jumped at the Obama style Election campaign to cling on to power rather than to at least fix up one of the problems Gillard promised the nation she would do before Windsor and Oakeshott made her PM. They say they have a border protection policy but the boats keep coming. They have implemented a mining tax but the tax doesn’t collect any revenue. Then the carbon tax, a tax when there isn’t a tax because it does very little or nothing at all for the environment and money collected is given to people as compensation.

      Now we have this Gillard Govt using Obama style tactics - fancy speeches/talks through social media/propaganda machines to fool them over before any kind of governance and good honest rational thinking.

      The Democrats won again because they are a better party, with a better leader, and more importantly, better policies.

      They also won again because when the right wing loses, it blames everyone else but itself, which intriguingly, never seems to go down so well with those being blamed, next time around. See you then.

      Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over again.

      Obama is going to lock heads with congress again over tax increases, around and around we go again.
      Romney was going for a tax cut and less regulation, you know it may not be the right decision, but it would get us out of this grid lock.

      The global economy is still largely pegged against the US economy, whilst they sit stagnant, everyone else watches and waits.

      Never said Romney was the better leader just as many Australians are disenchanted with Gillard and her Govt have been exposing their misdeeds and are prepared to give the alternative a chance. It is a natural course to take for any sensible person in any democracy. Obama was a do nothing leader in his first 4 year term and wanted to give Romney the chance to prove that he could get America out of the economic mess it has found itself in. Now Americans have to wait and hope for another 4 years for some good to happen before they have another chance to choose. If the Americans are lucky they will find themselves on the recovery path now, otherwise wait another 4 years when Obama’s out of the way and hope the next President begins the road to recovery. This will mean another 8 years before they have some indication whether it was all about political propaganda to remain in power or good sustainable economics for the nation and its people.

      Exactly the same thing happening here - Australians needs to get this incompetent Govt out asap for the alternative and if they don’t perform then out they go for the party in Opposition. Political parties are relying on political propaganda through social media and any media for that matter to fool the vulnerable voters. eg Gillard’s tirade in Parliament defending the indefensible gained her popularity internationally.

      Thanks for the kind words of encouragement yesterday, its always good from an outside source…The results weren’t quite what I wanted ,but after the initial shock wore off I’m good with it…What will be etc..
      As for my grandkids….They take after me [I’ve got my baby photo’s to prove it:) ] , but feel sorry for them as they get older. smile Anyway their mums only 4 foot 10, and dads only 5 foot, so maby have a few potential Melbourne Cup jockie’s in the family…. smile

      Let me know what happens with further treatment you are having as I may be able to give you some tips on making things a bit easier. Have been in treatment myself for a year now so have been able to source some pretty great advice. Just remember, you can get through this and come out the other side in one piece, it will only get you down if you let it!  ;o)
      OMG, are you a proud Gramps or what!!!  lol Are they your son’s or daughter’s kidlings?  Whichever, they are certainly going to be fine looking men when they grow up, and I am sure they will be the best looking jockeys on the track lol :o)

      Try again….. Mouse ,Will probably take you up on those tips. My next appointment is in 4 weeks ,more blood tests, and an injection to try to stregthen My bone structure….
      It would appear over the past couple of PSA tests that the Hormone treatment are losing their effictiveness. Depending on the results of the next PSA tests a decision on Chemo will be made then.
      Yeh I’m a proud Pa,proud Father (3 girls) and one hell of a lucky husband. I,m trying to get pictures of 3 of my other grandkids,(They all inherited my super cute gene smile ) including my grand-daughter posted to my Movember site http://au.movember.com/mospace/4851509/  in the next couple of days, so will keep every-one informed…
      This week I wont be Punching to much as I head to Rockhampton tomorrow lunchtime till Wednesday, and then Shi..err Sydney Thurs/Fri. Might be able to make a couple of posts later in the day, though when we are away tend to work long hours, so we can get home earlier..

      One big event this week that mostly went unnoticed is the huge votes in favour of legalising cannabis in Colorado and Washington.

      Hopefully we will start seeing similar law reforms in Australia on this issue.

      In reading some recent articles I am very surprised that apparently our culture is somehow under threat due to apparent “Asianisation”, yet, astoundingly no one can actually articulate what “our” culture actually is, how it looks, what is meaningful, what traditions resonate to all who fit into “our”, but it is definitely under threat.

      Also, since WW2 the very same “culture” has been systematically “Americanised” and for most of my life it has apparently been very wrong to point this out. Apparently we share cultural areas so that the “Americanisation” of Australian culture has been ok. Ironic that the issue that raised this referred to a “shopping mall” and not a shopping centre and this only a short week since Halloween was inappropriately celebrated in this country (yep go on and ask why it was inappropriate - short answer, nothing to do with America in this instance…).

      We seem very big on protecting our culture even though we have fairly consistently failed to articulate what that actually means.

      Given the obvious hypocrisy pointed out above (Asianisation v Americanisation) it is not difficult at all to present arguments that in short point out that those now whining about Asianisation are in fact whining about people who are not white being successful simply by embracing facets of “our” culture (apparently). In effect though, capitalism is not culturally specific, just lots of white fellas think they own the concept and all the benefits.

      I am always curious what this “our” culture business means. Personally I am of Celtic stock, however, am cognizant that society has moved on so that head hunting is not socially acceptable, despite that being of significant importance to my cultural origins. The message there of course is that things change…

      I am totally respecting” The Laurie Oakes” the main man for his reporting and dealing with political nonsense for many years.
      “The Laurie Oakes” may have been responsible for election results in the past one way or the other due to his hard nose reporting.
      I started writing about my current turmoil with our small business when I realised that it may be due to the Media not the Politicians that Australia is in our current economic dilemmas.
      Drift with me and think.  1.      20 million Australians are doing it tough. Jobs are being lost and factories are closing down.
                                      2.        Media outlets like Fairfax and Murdoch are cutting jobs and channel 9 almost went under due to advertising dollars.
                                      3.        Business must cut cost and save money and gone are the days when you have to spend money to make money.
                                      4.        Political nonsense has taken over the hard core journalism that effects directly to the general public and small business.
                                      5.        I wanted to advertise with chanel nine and brw but in order to keep my costs down and save money for customers as we can’t afford it.( I am upset about it)

      “The Laurie Oakes” needs to help look at the reasons why we are all in the dolsdrum. (Yes look at the media too for some of the blame”I am hoping “The Laurie Oakes” will Ban political nonsense and do the real stories about what is hurting the real hardworking people and small businesses around australia.  Statistics and information needs to be analysed and revealed to the public as the political nonsense is covering up those real figures.  Please give it to them “Laurie”with all your guns blazing.

      No-one should be surprised that the likes of Cardinal George Pell,, the local head & the Most Senior Roman Catholic Priest in Australia, his fellow Archbishops, Bishops are telling us that an Inquiry, let alone a National Royal Commission, into the Roman Catholic Church, with regard to paedophile child sex abuse etc. are unnecessary.
      For, at least, 50 years we have been hearing of paedophile activity within both the Roman Catholic & Anglican Churches. More recently those reports have been made against the Salvation Army, Uniting Church & other religions in Australia.
      During the entire time most of those running the RC Church today were already members of various Religious Orders. Many were Parish Priests. They were part of the conspiracy which led to offending “religious’, after the complaints had reached a crescendo, simply being shifted from one parish to another where they could begin their offending all over again. This practice was endemic throughout the Roman Catholic Church in Australia &, as we now know, in “most Holy Catholic Ireland”.
      Child Sex Abuse, whether the alleged offender is a ‘religious’ or not, is a Secular Crime.
      Child, or any other, Sex Abuse has absolutely nothing to do with anyone’s “Spiritual Life”
      By refusing to report all suspected offenders to the Secular Authorities: The Police. Those running those Religious Organisations - be they lowly Parish Priests all the way to the very top - by not reporting that known, but only alleged, Secualar Criminal Activity to the Police have laid themselves open to all sorts of criminal charges themselves, haven’t they?
      To date, most people think Julia Gillard has done nothing during her Prime Ministership which would cause her tobe remembered in the History Book of Australia.
      By Ordering the setting up of a Royal Commission into the Roman Catholic (and other) Religious Organisation she will be forever remembered for her courage in confronting the entire issue of Child Sex Abuse by members of religious organisations.
      ...and NO they are not just Religious Christian Organisations for other religions are also involved.

      For me since the Daniel Morcombe abduction and subsequent death of Daniel I have not been at ease with our society.
      Pedophiles affects a childs soul and their lives are changed forever into grown up life.
      I found out through some small research of my own the following information.  Hundreds of pedophiles are registered in every major town and city in Australia.
      We do not know where or how many their are out there only what grabs somenews stories.
      Some information on Google suggests 12,569.registered offenders in Australia.
      I read somewhere in Americia their was a town of 60,000.00 registered sex offender . ( Do they have a circle and networks to live double lives?) This is very alarming and if we could have accurate figures this will help society try and remedy the problem with medical castration. It is a sickness of the worst kind.

      Every time I hear a story on the news I store it in my memory and remember before Daniel was found 25 people were charged on the Sunshine Coast for internet pornography.
      Also sketchy memories on the news of pedophile rings covering interstate rings of internet pornography.
      Pedophiles are in all walks of life,  Doctors, Police, Judges, Priests. 
      Its got to the point I look at people in authority especially priests and wonder if they are pedophiles.
      Every human that has lived on earth for millions of years has survived
      pedophiles , some have not.  Its time they are all weeded out and accounted for.  Can the punchers help find out how big a problem we have in Australia by finding out statistics so that we can do something about it?
