It was only a matter of time before geeks clad in Guy Fawkes masks started some sort of vigilante action against 2Day FM DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian.
And… enter Anonyomous.
They’re like serial hackers Anonymous with an extra dose of self importance. So that’s a lot of self importance.
In the video uploaded to YouTube they accuse the radio duo of murder, no less, taking this over-the-top lynch mobbing to new heights. The Anonyo-mouse in the video gives them a one-week ultimatum:
We have listened to your excuses. We have heard the word ’prank’ a million times.
We have studied the facts and found you guilty of murder. You have placed yourself in an untenable position. You have placed your advertisers at risk - their databases, their websites, their online advertising.
We are Anonymous and hereby demand you terminate the contracts of Mel Greig and Michael Christian. We will not listen to any more excuses. We will not let you escape your responsibility. You have a funeral to pay for. We are Anonymous. We are legion. We are amongst you. Expect us. This is not a prank call; this is no laughing matter. This is your one and only chance to make amends. You have one week to do so.
The hacktivists Anonymous are a loose coalition of people; that’s the heart of the philosophy, to have a decentralised scattering of hacktivists.
There’s no leadership, no membership test.
So anyone can join.
Trying to work out whether Anonyomous is just a member of Anonymous with fat fingers is hard; it’s a new YouTube account. There are no links to it on AnonNews.org.
There’s no official structure, anyway, so whether someone is ‘officially’ part of them becomes somewhat meaningless.
Anonymous have done some cool stuff, targeting homophobic Ugandan laws as well as the notorious Westboro Baptist Church and Scientology.
But their very structure means every nerd with an internet connection and voice altering software can spout garbage – such as trying to pin a murder on the innocent – with the imprimatur of what has become an influential organisation.
Maybe it’s time for Anonymous get a little more nonymous. At least in a way so some sort of ‘they’ can be held accountable for what ‘they’ say.
As it is, it’s true - they really are become Legion. In a pestilence sort of way.
