When the political history of 2010 is written, every element of the closest election in a generation will be rightly scrutinized. The winning side will get home by a hair’s breadth but could it be hair that determines the result?

The rangas turned their fiery passions against the Red-Head-in-Chief.

Because there is a minority group whose natural connection with their chief advocate did not translate into votes on August 22 Australia’s rangas turned on Julia Gillard at the moment she needed their support most.

Exclusive hair-based research from the Punch shows that redheads turned their locks away from Gillard, being the least likely hair coloured group to support the ALP.

Source: Essential Media Communications

So what’s happening here? Is it a ranga recoil or simply a case of a group of voters refusing to back their roots?

Despite its Irish base, the redhead vote shifted away from the first ginga to lead the nation since the Depression. Instead, the Greens fired them up, as did the Mad Monk. Could this be a backlash against Labor’s centrism, a sign that redheads want to be fired up by conviction, be it from the Left or the Right?

There is another simpler theory, the ‘Reds Under the Beds’ pushed by an auburn member of the EMC team: ”I can testify it’s become really hard to be a redhead in this country since the rise of Julia Gillard,” our ginga flamed “Can’t even walk along the road without someone yelling ‘ranga’ out the car window.”

If this logic holds true, the backlash could be pushed by the very attention that redheads accrued from this high-profile figurehead was sufficient for them to turn away and seek the anonymity they so traditionally crave.

The Punch’s official tint guide shows interesting differences between other hair shades.

Black Hair – including the bulk of Australia’s immigrant population, black hairs were more likely to vote for the ALP, indicative of Labor’s long-term affinity with new arrivals. Also most likely to say they didn’t know how they were going to vote, even as they headed to the polls.

Brown Hair – the base of middle Australia was where the Coalition gained momentum in the swing seats with their appeal to traditional follicle values.

Blondes - contrary to stereotype blondes do not appear to have driven the Queensland backlash against the ALP.

Grey/white/bald  - the older demographic met expectations, being more likely to vote conservative and less likely to have no idea about where their vote was going.

Of course, there is a simple solution for anyone who is not happy with these results who thinks we are providing a superficial analysis that belittles their political views. Apply the Clairol (or better still the henna).

Maybe us baldies could get our heads tatooed like all the the other brainless people, what does the term bridled mean many colours I thought.

Old Clive, we no longer use the term “Baldy” the correct termanology is “Eggshell Blonde”

Peter did you take into comparison those who change hair color, and didnt vote with thier natural hair color, but jumped onto maybe the blonde or bald bandwagon

The bald vote and affiliations can go either way. Il Duce Mussolini was as bald as a badger, complete fascist , while Peter Garret - same hairstyle but lefty.  So, out of all possible indictors, hair style (or lack of ) and color probaly aint the best.

Who will be the hair apparent?  As a head which changes colour monthly, I suppose I’m a swinging voter.    We could do worse than vote next time for the Housewives Association who always try to balance the budget.

True Peter but Abbott still couldnt beat the ALP in its weakened state so what does that say about the Coalition ? Now we hear members of this august body , the Coalition, are phoning people up and scaring children claiming to be the devil - sad, sad, sad ! Abbott and his Family - creapy and crawly ! Yuk !

nosthow, you were the one saying that the libs had no chance of beating labour, willing to eat your words now?
phoning people up and scaring children, what fairy tale book did you get that from, I enjoy your comments, always good for a laugh lol
you sure do live in a fantasy world don’t you?

Ha ha! Oh Brian. If it doesn’t help the coalition it never happened eh?

He’s talking about the Bill Heffernan phone call to Rob Oakshot where he said he was the devil ‘cause he thought he was talking to Rob’s kids.

    • Bruce says:

Nosthow:  What does that say about ALP voters, they must like incompetence, have no idea about basic economics, or a party that can not even put a basic business plan together for the NBN.

    • The Badger says:

      05:09pm | 31/08/10

      @ Bruce

      Where you been?

The NBN doesn’t need a business plan. It’s essential infrastructure.

Did you ask where the business plan was for the 16 billion plus we are going to spend on fighter aircraft?

    • Ronk says:

      05:21pm | 31/08/10

That’s right Chris, it never happened. ONE member (not “members”) of the Coalition phoned Oakeshott and when Oakeshott didn’t answer and someone else asked “who is speaking?” he replied “the devil, ha ha” and hung up. It was actually Mrs Oakeshott, Heff never spoke to Oakeshott’s kids, much less scared them. As if any kid in 2010 would be scared by that, most of them are fans of Twilight, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, etc.

@Brian Taylor - poor old Brian - mate its sad when you have to defend bad behavouir by your Coalition mates very sad indeed. It was all over the newspapers and TV the last 2 days old fruit - bone up please Brian !

    • Chris L says:

      10:05pm | 31/08/10

@Ronk indeed, just the one… unless any proof comes from:

“criticism of Liberal backbencher Alby Schultz for calling independent MP Tony Windsor, with allegations that he abused him and told him to support the Coalition.”

At the very least one of the accusations is true, possibly more. On the other hand I’m still waiting to see evidence of the Liberal accusation that Labor has “ruined” the country, rather than it currently being the envy of the world. Assuming we’re talking about the economy.

Don’t worry, I’m not impressed with Labor either, but for legitimate reasons, not the vague accusations I keep hearing from the right wing.

      True Michelle,

Bolt strained really hard, as if he hadn’t had a movement in weeks. His brow was furrowed as his face became the colour of a cooked beet.

And when his straining was done and the thought had finally popped out, he spoke:

This climate change is a scam and it is crap. And Tony took up the mantra and in the minds of the simple who depended on him for their thoughts, it was so.

It is not necessary to understand things in order to argue about them.

Did anyone really expect all those beautiful natural red-heads to vote for Julia Gillard simply on the grounds that she has dyed her hair red? Of course we didn’t! Red-heads are far too intelligent tobe taken in by such fakery!
With the exception of one of my grand-mothers, whom I loathed, who had hair so red it was called “carrots” I love redheads! No. I’m not a red-head.
I suppose it all boils down to the fact that most of us like people who do not pretend tobe something they are not.
Until the 2nd week of Julia’s excrutiating election exercise we had Julia, Mark1. Then we got Julia Mark2. Neither were the Real Julia. Hopefully she will see the light & decide to put away the facade & allow the Natural Julia to emerge!
Red-Heads Unite! Your hair colour is yours exclusively & you should not allow others to ape you & confuse us Rangaphiles!

    • DocBud says:

      12:50pm | 31/08/10

I’m with you, Robert, I adore redheads but they must be natural (I’m married to one and consider myself lucky that the one I love came with the bonus of red hair). My wife feels no affinity for redheads out of a bottle and her hackles rise if anyone dares suggest her gorgeous colour is out of a bottle.

    • Mike says:

      11:28am | 31/08/10

It was nothing about hair colour, but more about whether Gillard was fit for the job. Whatever correlation exists, it is not sufficient alone to make such an assumption. Example, all criminals breathe in oxygen to stay alive therefore oxygen makes people evil. Not going to work.

If anything is searching for reaction or “findings”, this is it.

    • Northern Steve says:

      07:48pm | 31/08/10

Not as of 7pm. Gillard was silly to make such a big thing about the 2PP vote. Can we please let it go now?

    • nosthow says:

      06:08pm | 31/08/10

Poor old Tones Abbott - he said “We are now a government in waiting” based only on the continuing 2PP count which still has a long way to go. No sooner did he say this and the count roared ahead with Labor now well in front ! Oh yeah Mad Monk - wipe that egg off your face buddy !

    • Northern Steve says:

      07:54pm | 31/08/10

He can borrow the cloth Julia used to clear the omlette off hers.

    • dead to me says:

      07:57pm | 31/08/10

Everyone I know has been saying the fact that a 1st term Labor government has to fight this hard, in an election this close clearly shows that the ALP/Gillard have lost their way and need to spend a lil’ time in the political wilderness to learn how to be a better government. Guess the 12 years with Howie in charge didn’t teach them much maybe 24 years will give us a better ALP. Go Libs!
