The Speaker slips away…
Peter Slipper left the Speaker’s office tonight and the Opposition was left with a troubled sense of victory in the campaign to get rid of him.
Mr Slipper bid farewell to his former friend, supporter and wedding guest Tony Abbott, the man who had halted the parliamentary schedule today to demand that he be removed as unfit for office.
He said he held no rancour towards Mr Abbott. Others in his family might not be so generous.
The outgoing Speaker wept for his wife and family who had been involved in the legal and political offensive to have him sacked after he quit the Liberals to sit as an independent and use Labor votes to get the job.
They also were victims of the outrage over offensive text messages which finally damned Mr Slipper.
It was a messy and unpleasant political battle with one man paying the price of the savage engagement between Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott.
The issue of the Speaker has been resolved, but few in Parliament will be proud of how it was done.
But in the allocation of points, it is an Opposition victory and the Government will have to share the ignominy being piled on Mr Slipper.
