Peter Slipper left the Speaker’s office tonight and the Opposition was left with a troubled sense of victory in the campaign to get rid of him.

A troubled farewell. Pic: Ray Strange

Mr Slipper bid farewell to his former friend, supporter and wedding guest Tony Abbott, the man who had halted the parliamentary schedule today to demand that he be removed as unfit for office.

He said he held no rancour towards Mr Abbott. Others in his family might not be so generous.

The outgoing Speaker wept for his wife and family who had been involved in the legal and political offensive to have him sacked after he quit the Liberals to sit as an independent and use Labor votes to get the job.

They also were victims of the outrage over offensive text messages which finally damned Mr Slipper.

It was a messy and unpleasant political battle with one man paying the price of the savage engagement between Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott.

The issue of the Speaker has been resolved, but few in Parliament will be proud of how it was done.

But in the allocation of points, it is an Opposition victory and the Government will have to share the ignominy being piled on Mr Slipper.

(extract of my post in the OT before it closed)  The cynic in me thinks he may not have been allowed to step aside from the position of Speaker so easily if he was going to quit Parliament as well. But that’s just my thought.

Laurie stated on Channel 9 News Peter Slipper was thing of resigning from parliament as well, but has instead decided to stay on as an Independent.

At this rate the Independants are going to be the biggest group in the parliament. Once again this whole sordid mess shows what a low standard of politicans we have from all parties.Unfortunately for Australia the cream that should have risen to the top in Canberra has for many years now turned rancid.

Corrupt independents with their own self interests supporting a morally corrupt government.

      Nihonin
Slipper has always been an Independent since he resigned his Liberal party membership.
      FromWikipedia:
Slipper is an Independent member of the Australian House of Representatives, representing the Division of Fisher Queensland,a seat which he has held since 1993. He previously represented the same division for the Nationals from 1984 to 1987. Slipper was affiliated with the Liberal party’s Queensland division from 1993 until its merger with the Nationals Queensland division to form the Liberal National Party of queensland in 2008,continuing to sit in the Federal Liberal party room until he become an Independent upon his election of speaker in 2011.

The opposition moved a motion to remove the Speaker of the House, Peter Slipper, on an accusation of denigrating women, and obscenely so, in private text messages to a staff member.

In Switzerland, There is no opposition party, no presidential veto, and no strict party discipline.

In Switzerland, the people are the supreme political authority with many political rights.

Switzerland’s direct democracy means that all proposed amendments to the constitution are decided by referendum. Any other federal law can be put to a referendum if 50,000 citizens sign a petition - meaning that Switzerland’s federal system can be changed by its citizens.

There is one thing for sure if we were a democracy with the same right as the swiss citizen we wouldn’t have a flaw system and we wouldn’t any rat in our house.

If Tony is happy to protect a system with so many faults in it and is refusing to rectify them than it is as guilty as the rat.

Repect democracy and no more rats.

Our system is worse than a mafiacracy, at least the mafoisis would have the courtesy not to use their own house as a bordello.

If Tony is happy to maintain and protect a faulty system with this king of problems, how can we trust him?

A private exchange of text messages should remain private. I send my mate messages all the time what some people would consider offensive if we spoke about it in public, these messages i send my mate are intended for humour and nothing else.  Politicians are people and private messages they send should remain private. How would you like it if the media got a hold of your text messages and shared them for the whole world to see? How would you like it if the media broadcast a private joke between your mates saying that it was offensive?

Are we becoming so politically correct now that private messages are shown in public?  what next our brains are scanned and our thoughts are read just in-case if we think anything what might offend some precious people?

    • Steve of QBN says:

      08:50pm | 09/10/12

But these were sent from an employer to an employee.  Send this sort of stuff to your boss do you?  Do you expect to get this sort of thing from your boss?  No?

    • Steve of QBN says:

      07:42am | 10/10/12

After thinking more on this, here is another slant.  Do not put into a text message, tweet, email or blog what your would not be game to say in public.  The text messages are only “private” until they used as evidence, then they come into the public domain.

As I said earlier, this was not a joke between mates.  It was a text from an employer to an employee, sent in the work place and appears to be designed to foster a non-professional relationship.  Sure, you can be friends at work but this was going beyond normal office camaraderie.

    • David says:

      07:40am | 11/10/12

I think the concern here is that the content of the text message can be indicative of the type of person who would send them. Many people would have concerns that a person who thought in that way was in such a position of power and helping to shape our society.

No surprise, his position as the preserver of parliamentary dignity was untenable. Numerically, the government gains from this (another vote in play). Politically, the government loses out significantly.

      02:19pm | 10/10/12

Julia is a legend, she is by far the best PM we have ever had in this country. Our PM is a shining beacon ” a light on the hill” an example of the very best our country has to offer. She is abely supported by a fantastic team of Plibersek, Roxon and Kate Jones. Strong labor women creating strong policies for women not sexist policies or equitable policies but ones designed especially for women. The reduction in the single mothers allowance is a great example, this will ensure that women are not trapped at home with kids but will be able to get out into the real world and get jobs in the union as adminstrative staff or even higher up like that wonderful Kathy Jackson . They may even get a political position in the labor party , the quota system is working really well, it definately makes the cream come to the top so to speak.I say well done Julia dont answer that sexist pigs comments in question time , make him listen, really looking at his watch all the time its really annoying , and sexist.. As Ant sharwood has said you really owned Abbott its all come good now soon everyone will love you again and they will forget that silly lie about the carbon tax. I mean really I love paying extra for tax who wouldn’t it will stop the polar bears from jumping off icebergs. I digress a little sorry about that but really why aren’t more people thinking about the bears.  Really clever move supporting Slipper too, I can see that you are one step ahead of every one with this one, its all part of the plan, install useless male leadership position, useless male fails and even better sends disgusting texts about womens parts, stand up for useless male to show how you are on moral highground, then when useless male steps down appoint, female to the position, brilliant stuff. You are truly gifted Julia.

Youn mention Abbott? Why? Slipper was a piece of shite, a man of more than questionable morals, most likely a thief (still to be decided, but Roxon might be able to give a comment?), a liar and a bully. That this pond-scum was elected and representing his constituents is a travesty. This is not a win for the ALP or the Lib/Nats, it is a win for the people of Australia. The biggest problem is that there are many other low-lifes still to be tossed out. Tell it like it is, he was a filth, and that he is still remaining in parliament shows the man has no shame, put him in the seat next to Thomson, and never let this filth anywhere out of the country where he can be seen to represent us.

Once again we have a politician who refused to accept or acknowledge responsibility for his actions. Obviously Peter Slipper got things wrong, very wrong and only now after constant pressure to take responsibility for his actions has he finally done so.

I believe our actions define who we are and no matter how much we try to hide, cover up or gloss over them, if they are wrong they are simply wrong. Why can’t politicians from all sides of the political divide simply take responsibility for what they do, if they make a mistake admit to it and learn from it and grow.

I simply cannot listen to or read any material about our current government without feeling sick to the stomach. An adult debate does not mean 2 people facing off accross the desk yelling and throwing mud at each other. I have differing opinions from many but they are mine, I own them and if someone does not like them then it is up to them to deal with it.

Does your colleague still think Gillard has a better chance of winning the election because of this? HAHA, what a numpty that Sharwood is. Even if he hadn’t resigned, it takes a serious amount of willful bias to think Julia Gillard came out of this with more points.

But, as we know, her credibility is completely gone.

Mal why are you an apologist for Gillard at this time. Every vote for Slipper today is a tainted betrayal of democracy. The Independents stand condemned and Katter lost his kahunas. Parliament is a farce. The handbag hit squad have their lady in the chair. Thomson keeps them afloat. The PM will be undone by the AWU scandal and you are still a sycophant. Who in God’s name will protect FREE speech? Perhaps, just perhaps it will be Slipper. Confronted with the gravitas of this, he may have some last sense of decency and resign his seat!

There are too many news stories surrounding Tony Abbott’s days at Sydney University and he should stand up and be a man, instead of hiding behind his wife.
If the stories are not true or correct like Tony Abbott claims,it is a wonder that he hasn’t sued these newspapers for libel.
The mere fact that Tony Abbott is saying or doing very little about what has been said by former students that were at Sydney University with him makes one wonder if Abbott is hiding parts of his past that he doesn’t want to make public.

Why would he sue? He would be giving the claims oxygen, Craig Thomson sued the paper till they produced the evidense and then there was that whole 3 year investigation. TA is leaving it alone so there is no more story or opportunity for innuendo. They could produce facts which I’d say they are short on given one of their witnesses was “nearby” and didn’t actually see it…. oh and it was 30 odd years ago….

That, Nicky, is leadership…doing the right thing. Gillard, on the other hand, again showed her desperation and lust for power.

    • youdy beaudy says:

      06:30am | 10/10/12

Well, i watched the videos, replays, on the ABC and saw both commenters, Abbott and Gillard and i thought Abbott was just the same ole same ole boring Abbott and Julia stood like a leader and reminded him of some home truths, and it was good. I was thinking of phoning Jenny.

It was obvious that Abbott our would be leader who wanders around already like he has been elected to the high and dignified office that he spent most of his time going on about, was a little bit nasty and i also noticed some of the women on his own side and including the female speaker were wishing he would go away somewhere. You could tell their obvious dislike by seeing the look on their faces.

Then our Julia got up and slam dunked him where it hurt, his big ego. Even pyne looked very quiet for a change, not a word out of him or a smarty smile. The other so called men wanted to crawl back under their rocks and the bloke who should be leader of the opposition Malcolm Turnbull had his head down either in prayer or disgust for the bloke.

As far as Peter Slipper goes, well that Ashby bloke is just trying to fund up his retirement as one does and has got 50,000 dollars already and still wants more. The bloke who used to give Peter a nice shoulder massage. Not bad if you can get it.

As far as the text messages go i would presume that there are many others who do the same thing and watch their porno each day and guess what they have on there re the qualities of women. Let’s go figure, blokes, shall we. I don’t make any moral judgement on it because we all know it goes on all the time everywhere don’t we or is this just an isolated case.

Regardless of all this Slipper was not a bad speaker, he did his job well although the outfit was a bit old world.

I don’t like computers very much although i write on here. I don’t think that technology has advanced us very much just cost us more to live. But i remember Jewish blokes i used to know sending filthy emails to our computer and filthy emails mostly about Muslim women to us. I was disgusted and wrote and said don’t send those types of things to me as i don’t like it. Never had a Muslim send me a text or email putting down Jewish women in such a disgusting way. What about that. People know what goes on on the internet all the time. Peter Slipper slipped up the others have got away with it up till now. So condemning Slipper may be right but many out there are worse than him.

But as Abbott said, he holds such a high and illustrious office. Well, i don’t know whether one could see trying to control parliamentary rabble as the high office, probably more like controlling a room in an insane asylum. Or a teacher trying to control a room full of always out of control schoolkids. As Julia said, that it was still before the court and they can’t interfere with the court. Abbott obviously doesn’t have regard for the court.

I am not puritanical by nature and as i wrote above, we all know it goes on everywhere every moment of the day, that is, the putting down of women and also men. Blokes with sexual problems putting down wimmen as if they are sexual chattels. All the time it goes on, so people should clean their own backyards, sweep them clean, and when they are squeakey then comment about Slippers behaviour. We should get rid of Government and return to Kings and Queens because having them was a damn side better than what we have now.

I commend Julia for standing for the girls and sticking it to the women haters. Good on you Julia, your father would be proud of you.

So when people go on with using some puritanical ideas and expressions they should think hard and fast and look as to whether they have done similar or worse things that Peter Slipper who said that Tony was a good friend, he didn’t hold any malice against him and that he came to his wedding as a family friend, great friend, a friend of convenience to be sure, many of them around, you all probably have some yourselves, i have had many. And then as Julia said and quoted Tonys previous wonderment about how he saw peter when he was assistant speaker as a worthy person who would be great in the high office. God, what a load of hippocracy it all is.

And Julia Gillard not 24 hours ago stood up and supported the man and voted for him to retain his job, slapping the women of Australia in the face in the process because she knew EXACTLY what this man Slipper had said about Australian women, but Gillard didn’t care at all, she only cared about hher OWN job.

As far as sticking up for an incompetent mob well that is just your opinion and everyone who writes an opinion on here thinks that their opinion is right including you ole girl.

As i suggested and obviously you didn’t read as you picked through there on my opinion to put shite on me, why don’t you sweep your own perfect backyard and try to get your driveling to stop driveling because at the moment i am trying to wipe it off my keyboard..

And you run down Getup, well at least Getup does some good and makes some changes from time to time. What do you contribute. The only person who has the right to criticize are those who contribute something not those who don’t contribute. And Boring hey, well that could be disputed. Have a look in the mirrror at your own perfect image. Good idea to clean it sometimes, if you do you might die of shock.

And the shrieking woman well that statement just tells me that you are an Abbott glued on. A bloke who hangs around with a bloke who was convicted in another country of public toilet scandal. Well, go figure, we know what you support. I think Abbott should look at that association. Talk about run down Slipper. And just think, families and little kiddies have to go into public toilets sometimes. Shame, Shame , Shame as one bloke we know used to put it. Get a life for gods sake, that’s if you have one. If you’ve got all the answers why don’t you get your drivelling mouth and run for PM Yourself and quit annoying me, Don’t insult my intelligence., And guess what Julia isn’t posing as PM, she is the PM and a bloody good one at that. She sure stuck it to your man who is obviously like you against women. She’s a winner in my eyes.!

I’m sure that after some time in Parliament which is an institution like any other that is behind the scenes away from public scrutiny people who are there are privy to a lot of stuff which goes on that the public never know about.

It is a dirty business politics where i’m sure one can be sullied, where good meaning people get elected to enter and who are virgins basically on political things and issues, but after some hard yards and within party rooms and back rooms and whatever rooms they have find out who is who and who has certain types of leanings and points of view about a lot of issues.

But they don’t say anything but they know what goes on from the most noble acts to the most dastardly and lowest of the low and that includes warts and all type happenings. Only the flys on the wall would be able to tell us the secrets, things that are kept from the public eye because of the fact that they can bring down governments, ministers and reps if the truth came out.

But, who is going to say it, whistleblow etc without compromising their positions and being removed. It would be a mindfield of truths and half truths and blatent lies. Blokes with sexual problems and women also all trying to destroy the others because by doing that they think that their position is hidden and they make that they are in some way not like the others by distancing themselves, and speaking in the loudest terms.

I think this is what has happened here with the relationships with Abbott, Slipper his once highly thought of good worthwhile friend who was lauded by him and even he was a wedding guest of his good friend, then there is his association with Alan Jones a bloke who was convicted of crime in GB.

I feel that there is something else under the sheets so to speak with these three which is well hidden and that’s why slipper didn’t go down the track with the same horribleness as Abbott He probably didn’t want to expose people and make the public privy to more negative things and therefore do more damage to the parliament than has already occured. He, regardless of what has been revealed about him still feels the the high office of speaker is to be respected, so he resigned. He would have had to anyway to end it all.

. What are those hidden connections and why don’t we all know if it is important in exposing something to us all. I am not accusing anyone on here but there definately would be something hidden going on between those 3 and i think slipper knows something but didn’t say and in abbotts talk ripping apart the bloke who was once his good friend and endorsed by Abbott in the past. Is Abbott by ridiculing Slipper covering up something to distance himself from Slipper his once good friend to cover something up and hide it from us all, the most important people, the voters and opinion formers and many of us easily influenced by their words and phrases.. Would we all like to know about all that. It’s all very smelly in the psychology of it all. Just noticable to me that’s all and maybe to some others also.

Not suggesting there is anything underhanded but i have lived in very close institutions where there were positions sitting before the public in good light but behind the scenes within the organization many people who looked very shiney were something else entirely different. Just sayin not accusing. We need to know more.

Is anyone game to go there, probably not, well what else can one say. Abbott virtuous Slipper his good friend a scumbag and not worthy of office

What is Peter Slipper keeping away from us all. Tell the truth Peter and they say it will set you free or will it. An expose would be a good clearing ground for all of us non institutionalized out here. It’s like the boil that needs lancing because the infection is going to poison the blood after the lancing one feels much better. Let them lance the boil of political hiddenness.

The Student went to the Great Teacher and asked, ” Oh Great Teacher, how does one attain to Enlightenment, can you reveal the secret to me.”

roger,This article () makes the point that both ends of the exmrete on the climate change issue have profited (Bob Brown, Greens; Tony Abbott, Liberal) whilst those who sought a middle way (Turnbull, Gillard) have lost:“Climate change has been good for business for some political leaders. Not surprisingly, those who place themselves at the exmrete ends of the argument have prospered:“Greens leader Bob Brown embraces the argument in toto and favours the substantial deindustrialisation of Australia as a result; his party increased its vote by 3.6 per cent and won control of the Senate last weekend. Liberal leader Tony Abbott is not a firm believer and does not see the need to make serious changes to the economy to curb carbon emissions. A champion of voters who reject climate change, he has turbocharged his party and could within a couple of weeks be prime minister"So, the issue I suppose is the one you raise of finding a “middle way” that is credible to the public, not only that it works but can be sold in that way. It would require an articulate and persistent politician to craft and sell such a policy in the current turmoil of the australian political landscape.
