Over Easter, the then Prime Minister quietly upgraded one of his Mandarins. It was the second time in as many weeks that a Mandarin has been invited into the bunker to receive new instructions.

Watch out. Rudd when he announced Burke as population minister.

This time it was the NSW Right Faction which scored a prize. The part-time Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Tony Burke, has been asked to come up with a cunning plan to have a cunning plan, and was even given a new moniker to go with the job. Mr Burke, who has always aspired to have his Who’s Who subscription waivered because of Who he was, is now to be know as: The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry, Minister ‘Sustainable’ for Population.

Three days into the job, the Prime Minister’s first actual policy announcement was to add the word ‘Sustainable’ to the Population Minister’s title. It really does sum up the way Labor is driven by spin.

The Minister for ‘Sustainable’ Population is a man steeped in the gore of NSW Labor’s bloody civil wars and was a key player in Mr Rudd’s downfall. Mr Burke is a man who owes his political existence (as does the new Prime Minister) to such worthies as the numbers men of the NSW Right, namely Eddie Obeid, Joe Tripodi and Mark Arbib. As a former Young Labor National President the Minister for ‘Sustainable’ Population is a made man of the NSW Right.

Mr Burke counts as his mentor, Johnno Johnson, a giant of the NSW Labor Right, who was once heard to say;

‘Its not what you know, or who you know, its what you know about who you know, and who you let know about what you know, that matters in politics.’

The new Minister for ‘Sustainable’ Population, must have taken this pearl of wisdom to heart. It is the only justification Labor could have had for giving Tony Burke the job of shaping the very fabric of our Nation’s soul.

It is not as if Tony Burke has been any better or any worse than any of the other Labor Ministers when it comes to actually delivering value for money projects, or delivering them at all. He obviously believes passionately, as do all of his Ministerial colleagues, that the ability to order a review to give the impression that you are doing something is standard operating procedure within the Labor Party.

The parallels between the way NSW has been governed under Labor and what Labor is doing Federally, are there for all to see. Having stuffed up NSW, many of the rats are now fleeing this calamitous ship and the Minister for ‘Sustainable Population does make a good example of the other refugee crisis which is currently engulfing Canberra.

Mr Burke is himself a political refugee who has sought and was granted asylum in Canberra. As a Labor Member of the NSW Upper House, he must have been a part of stuff that would make even the toughest nut want to breakdown and flee. Although events of the past week show Mr Burke has not forgotten his political roots and has again been at the forefront of the backstabbing, infighting and mates rates which is the hallmark of the NSW Labor Government.

The Minister for ‘Sustainable’ Population was not alone in seeking to immigrate to Canberra. The population explosion of ex-NSW Labor Members, staffers, and party luminaries are now infesting every Ministerial office in the country.

To date the new Minister for ‘Sustainable’ Population has been sprouting absolute garbage.

He would have you believe that the reason he can’t give population targets is because he doesn’t “see how any modelling would be capable of providing that level of precision”, because “to be able to give a precise (population) projection for 2050 forwards would mean being able to accurately predict every cycle in the national and international economy”.

Yet this is the same Minister who believes that computer generated models are so accurate in predicting weather patterns and increases in ocean levels over the next hundred years, mocks and castigates anyone who questions the models assumptions.

The Minister for ‘Sustainable’ Population also makes the preposterous claim that “to be able to coordinate that (where new migrants are sent) for the first time is a new area and something that government of either side of politics hasn’t previously attempted to do”.

Anyone with a skerrick of knowledge of Australian history would be able to tell our new Minister for ‘Sustainable’ Population, that is exactly what occurred shortly after the war when the ‘populate or perish’ immigration policy which is the largely still in place today came into being.

It is no secret that Australian Governments have previously sent migrants to where the work was, and one project which was made possible by this policy was the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme.

The Minister for Population has experience when it comes to reviews and has already been responsible for drawing up a few. One review into Australia’s Quarantine and Bio-security services was completed over eighteen months ago and nothing has happened since the reviews landed on his desk.

The $1,728,067 Quarantine and Biosecurity review received by the Minister on the 28th September, 2008 stated; ‘It is impossible to escape the conclusion that the agencies are significantly under-resourced, putting Australia’s economy, people and environment at significant risk.’

Our clean, safe, disease free status is not something we should ever take for granted, yet that is exactly what this Minister has been doing.

Given the lack of action on over 160 reviews ordered by the Labor Party, the Prime Minister’s plan to have the Minister for Population come up with a cunning Population Plan will never amount to more than a media headline.

At both a State and Federal level, Labor has never shown any qualms about using your hard earned cash to pay for another media stunt.

Since when has agriculture been a part-time job? This man has been the demise of many a farmer - his policy on drought is appalling & short-sighted. Similar to someone else’s policy on another insignificant primary industry in Australia: mining.

Recently, after expressing our concerns about the introduction of US cloned Wagyu studstook to Australia, our knowlegable Mr Bourke replied that cloning was a non issue.
He couldnt even see the likely consequences to our beef industry.

John Cobb – the Coalition and your boss Tony Abbott is not the only one upset that one of the first things Julia Gillard did was steal one of your dog-whistles about immigration.

You are right, “sustainable” means nothing. It has become the most over used non-word in the political lexicon. But this non-policy was designed to defuse the Coalition’s and Morrison’s increasingly hysterical scare-mongering about “immigrants”. What bothers you is that it will work.

Your allies in the “population debate” are the Greens, and they will be annoyed too. They has planned to make a big deal about Rudd’s so-called “big Australia”. Now they’ve had the rug pulled out from under them as well.

At current levels of immigration the population will reach the 36 million mark by 2050.

      http://jonjayray.wordpress.com/2010/04/18/current-level-of-immigration-to-be-a-disaster-for-australia/

I don’t agree with all the title of the piece but the maths is there.

Now Jools has said she doesn’t agree with big Australia trying to run the populist line. So msm time to put up.

Where are the policies to limit immigration as this is the only serious way to limit the population as i don’t believe even the nanny state government we have now would propose mandatory family planning.

Where is the actual policy to stop boat people as one source of intake?

I mean it sounds so super doesn’t it “I am against big Australia” as she gazes lovingly at the marginals in outer city suburbs.

But saying it doesn’t make it so. What are here plans. Ask the questions please.

This sounds all like “the greatest moral challenge of our times”. A huge piece of rhetoric and spin (and lies) designed to fool the people.

If she is serious let us see the actual policies to stop a big Australia.

I am sick of tongue in cheek populist promises (grocery watch, fuel watch, political advertising stopping etc etc) that are merely a money sink or a outright fallacy.

Julia you are against a big Australia. What are you doing to stop it?

I agree, Antiperspirant, Jools is just another ALP spinning top. I had no idea who Tony Bourke was until Lateline last night - it seems he is just another snakeman from the NSW viper pit. In any event, to actually change the trajectory of Australia’s population would mean actually changing some policy settings, which seems highly unlikely given Gillard’s first act as PM was to pretty much mothball every major policy initiative the gov had on the go.

Will big Tone or the ‘scarlet woman’ actually change the skilled immigration policy to cap arrivals and totally euthenase the student-visa-to-permanent-residency channel? Unlikely, but that is what has to be done.

Small Australia, big Australia - more like a big load of hot air.

Tony Burke was appointed as a spin doctor for Kevin Rudd’s big Australia. He had no obligation to report anything until after the election. In his role of Population Minister said “it is not how many but where to put them.” Can he explain how with a simple name change of his department we are expected to believe he is championing a sustainable population. Can he provide concrete policy examples he intends to implement???

Trying again : can Right Punchers assist me here, please. ?
Mr Cobb represents farmers, -and all power to him.
Mr Abbott has willingly, joyfully, shown that he is now beholden to the miners,  ...., So…,
What happens when there is another standoff between farmers and miners - like at the Liverpool Plains. ?
Who should have precedent ? Mr Abbotts miners/ mining, or the farmers- Mr Cobbs constituents.
Several months ago , many Right Punchers were willing to give their lives in order to defend the southern highlands farmer sitting in his tower. That protest was all about farmers having rights on “their “land.
So good folk, who should have the greater rights to land use, Abbotts miners, or trhe farmers ?

The pressure to provide housing will be a key policy challenge for government.
      So is Australia getting full?
With immigration projected to drive too much of our population growth, the polls suggest voters think the answer is “Yes”.
Next to the economy, immigration is the second most important issue,
        Quality of life!
High-rise housing caused social chaos in the UK.  We do not want it here!
And from where will come the tens of billions to build the infrastructure - the sewers, water treatment plants, power stations, hospitals, schools, roads, etc?
It’s “crazy” to be using workers from halfway around the world when there is a huge unemployed workforce at home.
Globally, e-waste is growing at a rate of about 40 million tonnes per year as consumers, in both developed and developing nations, buy new gadgets and discard their old ones
For every $billion made by business expansion another $billion or more will be spent by Taxpayers for their Rates, Mortgages, Travel expenses and Doctors fees for their rising stress medicine.
Politicians and many Businessmen can claim these items on ‘Expenses’.
We people do not want or need this expansion.  Crush the Politicians at the next Election and vote for a Party willing to control Population, maybe the ASPP, or NOW the ALP.
Stop family allowances after TWO children per Family.
GDP is failing us.  It must not have to increase every year.

What an amazing rant!  I assume John Cobb got the spot this week because Bronny was busy at the hairdressers.  It makes just about as much sense as Bronny’s usual rant.  First up, we note that the Howard government ramped up immigration to levels that would have to be regarded as unsustainable (sorry, for Cobbo’s benefit that should be “unsustainable”).  What Labor are now doing is to look at what might be a more appropriate level, but apparently Mr Cobb already knows the answer to that - without looking at any reports or models (just as he knows that global warming is a myth without the benefit of understanding any of the science behind it).  Yes folks, vote Liberal/National - rule of the ignorant by the ignorant!

    • Adam Diver says:

Damn you got us again. John Howard started it and in 2 and a half years labor decides to ..... implement a minister for it and then….. change thier name to be more palatable to the masses.

But actual policy changes there are none. You may blame howard for starting it (although circumstances were far different at the time) but you can not give credit to labor for opposing it in theory and not actaully making any changes.

This is the typical debate between labor and liberal.
Liberal introduce policies not liked by the left, and despised because of there success.
Labor introduce policy ideas, liked by the masses, completely impractical and never delivered effectively.

Although increased immigration would be a left, multi -cultural ideal about giving our opportunities to everyone. Or perhaps a right, growth in population = growth in demand ideal for big business.

The solution is obvious, we can not control births in the country, completely undemocratic, although the baby bonus was a terrible idea to repopulate, (yeah more bogans), so we need to cut immigration. If current trends (300,000+ year) equals 36 million in 2050, well I dont think the maths is too hard, for a firm getting paid in excess of 7 figures to work out an ideal number of net immigration.

Both parties statements about “sustainable population” are pathetic. The Liberal’s “12 point plan” has an identical “policy”. 70% of Australians want a major cut to immigration. If Abbott just said they’d cut it by half they’d win. We need to get both of these parties out if this country has any chance of not turning into another hole like those overseas. In fact a stroll through Sydney city would suggest that it may already be too late given the amount we have already imported.

A review, just like all the old staionery he had printed with “Population Minister"on it which he will now have shredded & brand new staionery printed, which will cost the taxpayers untold 10s of 1000s of dollars. A review which he will use to justify his position. A review which, like all the other mulyi-million dollar reviews before it, will be delivered to his desk to be simply ignored. Whether the leader of the ALP is Rudd, Gillard, Swan or Shorten the ALP has not a shred of respect for the people of Australia and their hard-earned money. They think it is their to do with as they wish. They think nothing of squandering our money in any way they like. They think it is acceptable for them to create hundreds of billions of dollars in debt and then allow future generations & some unfortunate future Federal Government to take the hard decisions to pay off the ALP-created debt.
If the now deeply tarnished St Julia of the ALP does not lead the ALP to victory at the up-coming election we all know what will happen don’t we? The Burke’s, Swans, Shorten’‘s & the unelected union bosses will gut her just as she & they gutted Kevin Rudd. A way to go would be to stop immigration for a generation or two and then have another look at it. We all go through life controlled by symbols such as those on the highways and streets put there to keep us from killing ourselves or others. Symbols such as, Stop, Go and caution, turn right or left with care, all these things we have to do in our day to day lives and we obey them so that we don’t get into danger and as we all know it’s easy to do that. But we ignore the laws of our Nature which are telling us that no more interference can be tolerated by it. Our lives are controlled completely by the people who are out of control. So what can we expect?!!.

To my small knowledge that i have gleaned from reading etc. there seems to be a rather large problem that can occur in Australia as regards the negative impact on our specialized enviroment if mass immigration is allowed here.

Our enviroment at the moment is going under very quickly and has been for many years now, not only bad farming methods but clearing of forests etc. has put all of our unique wildlife under threat.

We have now over 20 million people here and it is insanity for us to try to double that. The Enviroment will not handle it that’s for sure. We know that!!, don’t we.?, or are we just all stupid. Sometimes the latter of that statement is more true of us all. The striving for wealth is ok, but it must be weighed up with the enviromental cost to us all.

We don’t have enough water to sustain a population of such size. This is one of the driest countries in the world. Our rivers and creeks are already poisoned and ruined by over farming and development. Our snakes, goannas, birds and ocean dwellers live already under threat of extinction and it’s getting worse every day. Hundreds of species of animals becoming extinct every week. Our forests becoming non-existent and under Abbott the intention is to develop and dam our north queensland rainforests. A recipe for disaster.

The question is. When is the lunacy going to stop.? People of religion say that when they die they are going to some sort of Paradise or Heaven because they have been very good, but don’t realize that this life we have been given allows us to live in a quality of heaven but unfortunately it also is a purgatory and hell as well, Mass consumerism will eventually destroy this beautiful heaven we call the Earth. Well people, this is all we have, the planet earth, there’s nowhere else to lay our heads. So those who have the job to govern should be listening to the Scientists who know about the subject and take the warnings seriously for a change otherwise it may be goodbye to us all.

Australia is a great and beautiful Continent, let’s not continue to destroy it by over population. Let’s increase gradually with awareness that others, namely our flora and fauna, also have a right to live here in peace and prosperity too. Otherwise it’s goodbye to us. The imbalance in nature that comes out of this stupidity will kill us all out and that’s the truth.

I have followed the population debate closely and I have seen one statement from Tony Burke since his appointment as population minister. That was to say that the issue was “complex”. It sure is when you are trying to put the interests of big business and self serving government ahead of the majority , whilst trying to get that majority to vote for you! Julia Gillard would have gained some credibility had she appointed Kelvin Thomson as the minister for Sustainable Population. His 14 point plan for population reform is what this country needs not more spin.

Interesting to read a piece about spinning titles from the same party who calls their finance minister ‘the minister for finance and debt reduction’. Nothing like saying you will cancel spending that will only go ahead if the new tax to pay for it is introduced (which you wouldn’t) and then calling that debt reduction.

It’s almost the same as predicting inflated numbers of future potential jobs and claiming that any real reform designed to solve problems of carbon pollution or claim a fair share of non-renewable resources amounts to ‘lost jobs’ as those predicted jobs won’t eventuate. See that friend of the working man Andrew Forrest claiming that the RSPT has put ‘30,000 jobs at risk’ despite the fact that the mining industry as a whole across the whole country employes about 175,000 people. Yes, apparently two single mining projects are going to increase the total sector employment by more than 5%. And people actually believe this. Oh and he couldn’t get financing for those projects even before the tax was announced, but let’s not bother reporting that little revealing fact.

It doesn’t matter whether the right or left are in power. Both must bend to the will of big business and accept neverending population growth. John Howard, for all his smoke and mirrors tough talk on refugees, increased immigration over 200% of what Keating was running it. Immigration will never significantly slow down.

Different governments will use different wordplay to make it appear that it is, but it won’t. Not in Australia, not in any Western country where the economic model is tied to endless growth.

There are only two ways immigration would slow down, firstly if we became a fully socialist country, secondly if our GDP reduced dramatically.

The vast majority of (non European) immigrants come here for financial reasons. It isn’t the democracy, lifestyle or a specific want to become ‘Australian’. In return our governments and business want them here for (short term)financial reasons, not because a multicultural society is particulary desirable. The multicultural model only became taught as ‘good’ once we embraced neo-liberalism after Whitlam and Fraser.

If immigration ever becomes a financial strain, you can be sure that all those pro-multiculturalism slogans and curricula would change in a heartbeat back to pre-1970s ones extolling homogeneity as strength.

Government policy is about money. Always.
