After three months, 7500 applications, a top 50, then a top 20, MasterChef Australia now has a Top Six to duke it out in the final week of this extremely popular TV show.

The eliminations start on Monday, and there will only be two left standing for the Grand Final on Sunday 19th July.

Chris from Masterchef at least has the snarling competition sewn up

Who will win? I rate the finalists:
Chris Badenoch:
The beer merchant from Melbourne has barely put a foot wrong in the competition with strong innovative cooking. However he is starting to look like he could do a Greg Norman, and choke as he gets near the finish line.

His meal of rib eye and bone marrow he served in the legendary cooks challenge was given scathing reviews, and he has faced two elimination challenges in a week.

Rumours have been circulating that he and other finalist Julia Jenkins are exchanging more then just recipes, which may be the reason his focus has slipped.
Verdict:

Chris has the technical ability and determination to give the title a good nudge. However rumours of fraternising with a fellow contestant over 15 years his junior will not have endeared him to the producers,
who will not want negative publicity to impact potential cookbook sales.
Julie Goodwin:

More Donna Hay than Matt Moran, this home style cook has turned into a firm fan favourite. In the beginning it looked like she needed a Xanax to get through challenges due to her nerves and tears, however she has conquered these and has since served up consistent high quality food, even if it is a bit mumsy.
Verdict:

Julie has the ability to put together great flavours, however she willstruggle if she has to cook with the more exotic ingredients. She would not be a popular winner with the foodies, but who sells the most
cookbooks - Donna Hay or Matt Moran? Yes Donna Hay by the proverbial mile.
Poh Ling Yeow
Poh, the Adelaide artist, has been a firm favourite with the judges since the auditions where she was given the chance to cook a second dish which got her through to the top 50.
There's rumour that one of the judges has a crush on Poh, well we can't blame him

The snarkarati on blogs and forums believe judge George Calombaris has a crush on the attractive cheftestant because of his fawning behaviour towards her.
Poh is the only one of the final six who has not been involved in a beat the chef challenge. Her adventurous cooking style has seen her produce some amazing dishes, but also some duds. Her deep fried
meringues were first time around a disaster, however once refined were proclaimed the dish of the night.
Verdict:

Poh’s honesty about not seeing cooking as a fulltime career could potentially hinder her chances of winning. Even though at times she has cracked under pressure in the kitchen, since being put back in the competition she has barely put a foot wrong. She will be hanging in there for as long as possible.

Julia Jenkins:

Julia is an unknown quantity in this final week of competition. The viewer has barely seen her seen since she beat Pete Evans in the early weeks of the show and was fast tracked to the end of the competition.

She has since been working in his kitchen to hone her skills. We have only seen her cook twice since then. Once in a high tea challenge in Hong Kong which she won, and then in a MasterClass where she showcased her pizza making skills which is not exactly haute cuisine.
Verdict:

Having missed out in performing in the high pressure environment of the show with time limitations and weird locations, she may crack under the strain of the final week. Because of her limited screen time her fan base is small, which the producers would know would result in lower cookbook sales.
Lucas Parsons:

The former pro-golfer managed to luck his way into the final week by beating chef Ben O’Donoghue with a sous vide kangaroo. Prior to this he had not been one of the shining stars of the competition. He is currently being mentored by Feidel Manu which has certainly seen an increase in girth, but has it resulted in a improved cooking technique?
Verdict:

As a former professional sports person he definitely has nerves of steel in competitive situations. However I don’t see him as a contender because whereas other fast tracked cook Julia won her challenge in Hong Kong, Lucas did not.

Justine Schofield:

Justine has polished cooking skills and is a favourite with both judges and viewers. My blog‘s [www.realityravings.com] recent poll on whose restaurant the viewer would most like to eat at showed Justine as easily the most popular choice.

She was a shock elimination in Hong Kong because of a below par noodle dish, however once reinstated in the competition she has won all three challenges convincingly.
Even though there has been chatter querying where contestant Chris picked up his technical skills from, no one has questioned whether she worked in the kitchen of her mother’s French restaurant.

Verdict:

Justine is indeed the triple threat, attractive, a talented and committed cook, as well as being popular with the audience. If the producers had their way she would win, and at this stage the only
danger to her not taking out the title is if she psyches herself out, or there is a focus on asian dishes in the final week.

It appears Justine is planning to cook up something from Alien

As I said over on Reality Ravings (if it’s worth saying once, it’s worth saying… etc):

Great roundup of the final contenders.

I don’t see Julie as a Masterchef, but – then again – I don’t see any of this lot as having attained the level I’d like to see awarded the title “Masterchef”. On that basis, I go for her on the basis of personability and the fact she has presented a coherent vision of her future restaurant. As has Chris, and I’m glad he’s in Melbourne because I’d be at his beer/food hall in a heartbeat, but I’ve probably been hoodwinked by editing and Julie has “grown” on her Masterchef “journey” while he seems to have gone backwards of late.

Poh? If she seemed to want to be a chef, I’d probably have no qualms about her being crowned, but… she’s said that’s not what she wants, so it will be a hollow coronation if it’s her.

Justine? Has a future, no matter what. She’s young, I’m sure she’ll have offers, she has no job at the moment… so she’ll be out looking regardless of result. Julie, on the other hand, might find it easier to give up the IT career for cooking if she’s got $100K behind her.

      Lucas and Julia… who?

First off, well done Ch 10 for a well timed entertaining show.

My thoughts for who will win? Justine for sure. And not for her cooking skills, thats for sure! Like most things with TV, superficiality is the winner of the day and I’m afraid Justine has all the appearance but little substance. At the end of the day, I wish her well but highly doubt how she would cope in a hot, high pressure environment like a commercial kitchen.

And like the previous commenter, Julia who?

I think Chris has run out of steam, otherwise I’d say he’d be a strong contender.  I think it will be a battle between Justine & Julie at the end.  But then again Julia has been flying under the radar; she just might have the skills to win.  I just hope Channel 10 sticks with the winning formula and brings this show back next year… and the year after…. and the year after…..

      I see it so simply,
I would eat at Chris’ restaurant and buy his books - he is interesting
Julie seems nice but seriously her ideas/recipes etc are BORING
Justine seems like just another cook
Poh is too superficial for me, I mean she doesn’t want to do more than write a recipe book etc.  What a typical arty flake!

      Won’t it be interesting??

ugh, i think they’re all so dull! or maybe channel 10 is just painting them all so dull. heaven knows why.

i wouldn’t buy any of their cookbooks or go to any of their restaurants. some of the episodes have been laughable for the crappy food being plated up. that $10 challenge tonight was appalling - french onion soup?!

my favourite was andre. i think he’ll be the one to make a name for himself even without the ridiculous masterchef crown that they constantly speak of. oh, i wonder if it will be a chef’s hat, or a trophy that looks like a chef’s hat, or ... never mind.

the best thing about masterchef is the dude with the cravat. now, him i could eat with a spoon.

hmmm….so who will win??? hmmm…well, I like Julia and Justine - both young and seemingly passionate, but as noted, this could just be the editing for our purposes.
As for Chris - look it seems he can cook as long as it is a big chunk of meat that would probably go with a beer or two.  But can he seriously cook a dish that would entice any person into his beer bar?  Probably not - I’d like to see him cook a vegetarian dish!  I’m pretty sure he would struggle with that one - whether or not he has had any “professional” training.
And sweet Julie - I would eat in her cafe any day - same for Lucas - but as for the “Masterchef” title, well, I don’t see it happening.
Personally, for what its worth - I’d like to see Julia or Justine win - so finger’s crossed

Julia was my favourite, until I saw the comment that she might be getting it on with that idiot Chris.

Also, is it just me or did it seem like there could have been something between Justine and Sam?

    • Jo says:

      02:44pm | 13/07/09

I think Justine should be crowned the WINNER! She is the complete package and she has showed us this many times over.

I believe there is something going on with Poh and one of the judges and thats why they let her back in. She is the only one that seems to get second chances. She got her 1st on at the auditions, when she is struggling in a challenge Garry and George give her a little pep talk and she comes out on top again. When any of the others are struggling they just shrug it off, so if Poh wins then it will be bias and not a fair decision.

Chris is very arrogent and thinks he is all that, I don’t tink he is a fantasric cook anyway. Remember when he served the judges RAW chicken, gross!

    • Peter says:

      07:36am | 14/07/09

That skank Chris needs to be hosed down and kicked off the show.

He is arrogant and condescending and continually slags off his fellow contestants.

But then this is a “reality” show so they need skanks.

    • Trish says:

      02:57pm | 15/07/09

Is it just me (and my husband) but does Gary have a “thing” for Justine?

    • Jan says:

      09:37am | 16/07/09

Poh gets a second chance at auditions, second chance again after
being eliminated, finals week gets advantage to know what’s cooking, then again next night. She does not finish decorating her cake, yet Justine gets eliminated!  She does not even want to have career as cook, so
‘what is cooking’ with her and a judge? When she wins it will be a disgrace.

    • Lyn says:

      04:20pm | 16/07/09

I agree Poh should have been eliminated last night as her cake was a mess and she had had 24 hours notice on what it was and how it should be done.  Justine has won all of the challenges that weren’t up to the judges by a country mile e.g. cooking for the sailors and the top chefs.  She was also picked 3 times to be in the Chef Challenge and when she was in a pair’s challenges she very generously gave Lucas and Julia a chance (I am sure Poh and Chris would not have done the same).

I have thoroughly enjoyed the show but now, I don’t think I will even watch the final as I don’t believe there is a true contender left.  Chris didn’t even have the decency to take off his dirty hat when he had lunch with 3 top chefs.  I don’t care if it is his trademark, it is just very rude and if I had of been the chef, I would have demanded that he take it off or not bother joining the table.  Julie’s kitchen is a mess and she sweats like there is no tomorrow and Poh is just a pain and had been given many unfair advantages.

    • Brett says:

      08:57pm | 16/07/09

The fact is that I will be extremely disappointed if Poh wins, she should never have got a second chance at audition.

It’s kind of like the Olympian who loses his race and then says, “oh, I wasn’t going to wear these shoes, I was going to wear my other ones”.  And then having the race organizers tell him to go get changed and he can run it again!

Perhaps the rest of the 7000 people auditioned should all get a second chance too?

      Julie as a finalist?????
What a set up!! She did not even present the three dishes correctly when Chris was eliminated. She couldn’t cook a pie without turning it into a puddle when Lucas was sent off- for crying out loud .
A great big con job is being pulled here…......

I agree with “S” SHE IS A TOP CON LADY,  Can not cook a fryed egg!!!!!!
Poh can not win because she is a Malayan -chinese WHO WOULD BUY HER BOOK [NO MOMEY IN HER] CHRIS was the only one who had the potentials to be a fairdinkum aussie master chef ,  Julie again cryed her self into the final, I hope POH win but not likely She is an Aussie but still not a fairdinkum aussie so she can not win , sorry but this is what i think.

apparently julie did not plate the final dish in time, judges geve her 5 extra minutes, didnt see that on the final show, Poh was robbed.

this is a terrible thing if true.

      10:43am | 21/07/09

I agree with tom jones , its a rigged show i had that feeling Julie is the winner since DONNA HAY PRAISED HER COOK BOOK INTENTIONS.
Australia still in kids shoes in cooking , only lamb chops and fish and chips on the menu, The Aussies has no tastebuds for exotic dishes naturally think Julie is a cooking master, not at all , she could be a great home cook but restaurant quality????my God sweating over the dish , not washing her hands , crying like a baby her dishes never ready falling apart , who wants to eat at her place let alone buy her book, no way   Poh is chinese so she can not be AUSTRALIAN MASTER CHEF , To many racist element was in the show , Andre italian Genie greek , Sandra spanis , Justine french non of them could fill the shoes , it had to be Australian , Grow up Australia , Lots of wonderfull dishes around the world go try them get your tastebuds growing, then you go out and scream Julie Julie Julie oy oy oy oy
IT WAS A RIGGED SHOW .

Hi Duncan,I follow your blog reiuigolsly and believe you really know what you are talking about when it comes to macarons. You are very right about the initial crunch. My macarons when bitten into have a very thin egg like shell that leads to a soft slightly chewy interior. This is only achieved when I bake the shells, then transfer them to the fridge for 1 day to achieve the chewiness. I then fill them with ganache or buttercream, then transfer them back in the fridge overnight before I deliver my orders. We make our macarons the french way, and to achieve a signature gloss it is as simple as having the almond meal as fine as possible, tap the tray on the bench top after piping and let the macarons rest for for about 20 mins. However the resting time always depends on the temperature in the room and outside. So I know my macarons are ready to be baked when I touch the top after 20   30 mins and it does not stick to my finger. All ovens are different, and some have hot spots etc. We bake our macarons at 120C for 25 mins. This ensures that they are easy to take of the baking paper but is also perfectly cooked. Another trick on removing macarons from baking paper is slide the macarons on the baking paper along the edge of the tray when placing the macarons on the baking paper on a cooling rack. They come out instantly. I have purchased a long list of macaron books, and have been dissappointed every time. I can not belive that books with shocking photos of what a macarons should look like and be baked are published. I really do think that you should look into writing a macaron book. Have a look at a book called Secrets of Macarons , you should write a book similar to that but I believe you could even make it better!!In regards to Adriano Zumbo’s macarons, it is interesting that although he makes his macarons the Italian way, his shell tops do not come out smooth enough. In saying that, we do need to bare in mind that because he as hired employees, quality control is dramatically decreased and everyone has a bad day. However, when I tasted his macarons, I was extremely impressed. His feet were horizontal and not vertical and his shell was well made.
