Earlier this week, Newcastle Jets coach Branko Culina got hit with a $3000 fine for saying his team still had a chance of making the finals “because all the teams around us are pretty s**t as well.”

But that pain in the wallet won’t be so nasty after the Jets mugged Sydney FC 3-1 yesterday afternoon at Sydney Football Stadium.

The fact that the team in ninth place can hand out such a heavy defeat to the second-placed team illustrates the A-League’s great strength and biggest weakness.

It creates a fantastically competitive environment but also means there is no consistency to any results, giving the competition a random energy. Will your team win on the weekend? Well, that depends… It might come down to the stars being in alignment, a Mayan prophecy, maybe someone’s shorts are too tight, or perhaps a bit of gas from sucking down a footlong Subway before the game.

That’s not to say even an ancient civilization that could predict the end of the world would have any idea how the hell the self-confessed s**tty Jets could beat Sydney 3-1 at home!

What have we learnt from this? 1. Branko Culina shouldn’t have been fined for being honest. 2. Sydney FC aren’t as good as everyone seemed to think they were. 3. Don’t put a $100 accumulator on A-League results unless the only thing you really want to win is a raised eyebrow and patronizing shake of the head from your better half…

Goal of the week: Archie Thompson’s second, Melbourne fourth. Real quality from the champions.

Talking point of the week: It’s Branko again. He was honest, he was funny and he got the game in the papers. Why did FFA feel the need to fine him?

What to say to sound like you know something about the A-League: “If Perth Glory can’t score with a full-strength team, how will they fare when their Socceroo hopefuls take off?”

Game to watch this week: Wellington v Melbourne. The Phoenix are hard to beat at home, Victory are really hitting their stride.

And the EPL in a sentence: Everton in 16th, Liverpool in 7th; a Merseyside derby has rarely looked grimmer onfield.

You gotta wonder about Sydney FC - a form slump right at the time ‘Larry’ says he’s thinking about whether to sign for another year.  Player power again?

The problem with the unpredictable results - entertaining though they are - is that apart from Victory - the crowds are falling away.  No tribal support means we are at the behest of fairweather fans to get any sort of atmosphere at games.

Archie Thompson - the same ‘pundits’ who keep saying how good FC are are calling for his recall to the Socceroos.  He’s a good play at Victory but awful at national level - forget him Pim!

Have not heard anything lately about FC signing vanDijk for next year.  What’s the latest on that?

Sydney were terrible yesterday and while everyone is busy losing, Victory will juts waltz away with it again.

And they’re the only ones who deserve it. That Sydney could lose to the Jets at home is a disgrace and makes the A-League a laughing stock.

I was at the Melbourne - Gold Coast match and the place was abuzz. Fans ALL OVER THE GROUND were chanting and the atmosphere was electric.

Face it Sydney, you’re just not good enough. A fancy European coach can’t change the fact that you’re rubbish and your fans don’t care.

Melbourne is the football capital of Australia - why we didn’t get the FIFA World Cup site is a joke. Sydneysiders will only go if there’s a chance to see lara Bingle and then moan about how “soccer’s boring”.

@ Chief Onetooth something tells me (but I can’t put my finger on it!) that you hail from Melboring or close by. I commend you for your loyalty to the round ball code south of the border and your disdain for FC can only help intercity rivalries. But the Aussie Rules brigade would have something to say about another football code dominating your city for 2 months in 10 to 14 years time. I can see channel 7 and the print media south of the border attempting to ambush a bid at every turn. While in Sydney the NRL will probably be too busy covering up another scandal involving another overpaid meathead. To win a World Cup bid a city has to be photogenic as well as having the facilities to hold it.
The Harbour, The Opera House and the Coathanger for Sydney and for Melbourne Um, Err…...??????? The Hume Highway outa there?

This was the first game in 14 where Perth havent scored at least one goal apparently.  Fittingly, it was against the team with arguably the most solid defence in the league.

Agree with the rest of your article though.  The salary cap has prevented any side from really stepping up for more than one or two seasons.  As the league matures though, the FFA will slowly give more breathing space to each club which will help them differentiate themselves.  At this stage though my A-league tipping is just awful, but then, theres still a chance I could win it, because everyone else’s tips are pretty shit as well!!!

Care soccer is so boring.  Too predictable, soft and a favourite with mums to protect their babies and schools to prevent insurance claims as nothng interesting ever happens.  That is why when kids grow up they look for something that actually keeps them awake and challenges them.  If you want to see “better” soccer you have to go overseas where it belongs.  Noone in my family or friends will ever pay to watch soccer, we have better things to do with our lives like watch grass grow.

How brilliantly original Glen.  A ‘soccer is boring’ argument?  Well….what a revelation!  We haven’t heard that argument before!

So if you find soccer so boring what are you doing here?  Giving us your pearls of wisdom?  Telling us something we ‘football’ supporters have heard at nauseam for the past 40 years?

Don’t like football?  Good.  Off you go.  I am sure there are other sections of ‘The Punch’ that you will like.

Good Glen.  Off you go.  Don’t bother us again.  We don’t need yet another ‘soccer is boring’ argument.
