There are certain things you can admit to in public life in Australia and recover from. Troy Buswell had a sexual encounter with a chair. He sniffed it, good and hard. He’s the Treasurer of Western Australia.

Oh Sebastian, I wish that ethereal-looking sheila with the parasol would make herself scarce.

If only Queensland Liberal Leader John-Paul Langbroek had suffered a similar lapse of judgment, he could have been the state’s next Premier.

But his admission that he spent his university days ponsing around campus holding a teddy bear after the style of young Lord Sebastian Flyte from the effete period drama Brideshead Revisited is an irrecoverable clanger - especially in a state where haute cuisine means you’ve remembered to put the pineapple ring on top of the ham steak, or a vertical tasting refers to the first 10 Bundys of the evening.

In a startling world exclusive in tomorrow’s edition of QWeekend in The Courier Mail, Langbroek reveals that while studying - you guessed it - law - he was faffing around at UQ with his cuddly bear under his arm.

Probably wearing a cricket jumper too, jauntily knotted over his polo shirt, as he lay back on the lawns outside the refectory listening to Scritti Politti or The Style Council on his Walkman.

Heroically he’s blamed it on his girlfriend, now wife, who he says urged her to carry the bear as his own Brideshead-inspired fashion statement.

Anna Bligh did her best impression of Peter Beattie in a dress yesterday, engaging in a bit of fnarr fnarr about the sexually-charged homoeroticism of the Brideshead set.

She described Lord Sebastian as “a charming but self-destructive and ultimately tragic fictional character’‘, and perhaps a harbinger of Mr Langbroek’s political career.

“As screaming lords might say, it is really rather bothersome,’’ Ms Bligh said.

Smug though she sounded she’s probably right.

Mr Langbroek has no future in Queensland politics and should move to South Australia immediately.

      Langbroek studying law… I think that’s a clanger.

Penbo….Scritti Politti…..lame obscure band reference of the year! Gold! LMAO!

The rest of the article was pretty good too!

penbo…agree with everything, except the fact that you southerners still think qld is a bit backward - “especially in a state where haute cuisine means you’ve remembered to put the pineapple ring on top of the ham steak”.

I think that’s a bit of an insult to the many fine restaurateurs in our fine state!  but langroek is an idiot, presiding over morons - let’s hope he’s not the next leader of our state!

Oh Daniel come to NSW and you will ask yourself- how could anyone with a brain vote Labor?

Actually Chris, I beg to differ, he’d be asking, I have a functional brain and I can’t vote for anyone in this godawful quagmire of a state!

      David, David, David!
I wonder what skeletons lurk in your closet?
The man is a fool, of that there is no doubt, but what I saw in State Parliament yesterday made me sick to the stomach. What Type of message is Ms Bligh sending here? It was just like being back in school when someone found out one of your little secrets or weaknesses. It would be around the playground in no time at all and that’s when the bullying would start. What I saw yesterday was a bully attacking a person over are past indiscretion. A stupid one at that but “he who lives in glass houses”. No wonder our kids are off the rails. We hear endless horror stories of kids being bullied to the point of taking their own lives daily and you wonder why. A bully in a play ground is no different from the bully at work. This bully should be suspended and I can not understand how your story only refers to her as being smug. Play the tape again and have a good look at it. Forget for a minute that this is Government in action. What if this was your office and one of your staff carried on like that. Your inaction would be to condone the act. Does the speaker of the House condone bullying?
Why is it normal practice among politicians. If one of our sportsman carried on like that the media would be all over it but you lot just condone it and make the place just a little more confusing for all the kids out there. I can’t do it but they can! How can politicians be role models with attitudes like that? How many times have you heard Ms Bligh voice her disgust over a sportsman’s indiscretion.  She has no right to open her mouth.
Ms Bligh’s actions didn’t make her look smart! Just like the bully she is that’s all. And by the way! What gives you the right to such an opinion as your headline. Maybe we like our toff’s up this way. Oh hang on, yeah,  your right! Most of the toffs are in Canberra.

Daniel: Actually it should be ‘How can anyone with a brain vote for any of the idiots we have that run in elections?’....thats right, they force us to and don’t provide the option of ‘None of these candidates fufill the requirements I expect in a representative.’

    • Anderson says:

...who the heck cares?  And how did this ‘article’ get considered news-worthy and get published?  Not only that, the way QLD is portrayed here borders on bigoted, and has no basis in reality.

This piece is an embarassment to its author and its publishers.

    • Kris says:

      11:18am | 18/09/09

It’s funny what we’ll accept from our politicians and what we won’t. Sex scandals, abuses of power, attending strip clubs, etc. are things that we’ll apparently let slide. This issue is of far less consequence, but will probably torpedo a political career.

      @Daniel
How could anyone with a brain vote Labor?

    • Weary says:

      11:20am | 18/09/09

To Daniel.  “how could anyone with a brain vote liberal” - go back to highschool, where judging people based on their clothing makes the girlies giggle and you feel manly.  Before you point fingers, remember you live in a state where people think that adjusting their wristwatches for daylight savings will somehow confuse cows.

    • Nick says:

      12:26pm | 18/09/09

The biggest mistake Langbrook made was talking to the rusted on Labor hacks in the media. The whole interview stinks of a setup.

    • Matt says:

      12:41pm | 18/09/09

I think Wayne makes a good point.  Although we would expect such a revelation to be exploited by opponents in politics it is interesting to consider how unacceptable it would be in any other workplace, or the playground for that matter.

    • Peter says:

      12:42pm | 18/09/09

Somehow I don’t think the Style Council and Scritti Politti were the music of choice of Tory Toffs like John Paul Langbroek at the University of Qld. Anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the music of these two bands would realise that.

What was that famous Labor leaders name from S.A., you know the one that knew everything except whether he was a he or a she, like all the misfits now in the ALP, this bloke could really be on the wrong side but then again he did it to please his future wife so he might be just to smart for that party looking at the past leaders of the Aust. Lying Party.

As a Queenslander i resent the lines “especially in a state where haute cuisine means you’ve remembered to put the pineapple ring on top of the ham steak, or a vertical tasting refers to the first 10 Bundys of the evening.”
We are not a state of slack jawed yokels.

    • BB says:

      02:40pm | 18/09/09

So what Anna Bligh was a hard core Marxist-Feminist extremist at university.

BTW JPL is a dentistry graduate not a law graduate.

    • Bob Viney says:

      03:13pm | 18/09/09

BB…JPL has changed, Anna Bligh hasn’t

    • JD says:

      03:19pm | 18/09/09

I dare say all he has to do is hang around and he has quite a bright future in politics here. Bligh is an absolute train wreck. The pompous waving to people who would just as soon spit on her any time she leaves her vehicle. She stinks of self adoration, and she successfully blind-sided a huge number of Queenslanders. Well the state has been checked. We’ve taken our medicine, and taken the hit on the chin.

But for poor old JPL and his teddy bear, he must be clinging to every scrap of truth in the phase, governments don’t get voted in, governments get voted out.

    • Sammy J says:

      03:55pm | 18/09/09

In QLD, ham steak & pineapple rings are normally reserved for special occasions, like weddings and welcoming dad home from prison parties. I went to a Melbourne cafe once but was openly laughed at for ordering a ‘coffee’; the barrister chuffed “oh yes dear, but what kind? Macchiato, breva, espresso con panna, mocha latte chai frappuccino??” I have since become incredibly insecure and carry my teddy around everywhere, scared that I may bump into somebody who is better than me, as in somebody from NSW or Victoria.

    • Daniel says:

      04:08pm | 18/09/09

@Chris, I would have to dragged kicking and screaming to vote for either major political party.

    • anne velu says:

Why would a dentist study law?????  Was there any truth in this article at all?

    • Wayne says:

      05:40pm | 18/09/09

It’s true I checked, John-Paul Langbroek got an honors degree in Dental Science. Come on David! You haven’t even done your home work. You can give an opinion on anything but if your going to hang a man at least get your facts straight. I will give you the benefit of doubt here. Did he study law and wind up a dentist? Sounds strange but not impossible?

Other pretentious 80’s bands listened to by wannabee arty posers:

      The Smiths
      Cabaret Voltaire
      Housemartins

      There must be others!

People who listened to the Style Council in the 80s wouldnt be seen dead carrying a teddy bear around. I think the sort of music you mean is the Thompson Twins. Thats more like it.
