Earlier this afternoon President Obama made an official State of the Union address in Washington.

You can watch some highlights of the speech above.  You can also join in the live Facebook chat on The Whitehouse website.

The State of the Union address was put in place by George Washington in 1870 and was shared through newspapers until 1923 when President Calvin Coolidge was broadcast live on radio.

Before the address I mentioned you can find some good background information on what President Obama was expected to address here and here. And for the more adventurous there was the Huffington Post’s State of the Union drinking game.

For some post address analysis head to The Washington Post or the Drudge Report.

And for some local coverage be sure to look at News.com.au ‘State of the Union: Barrack to the future’.

What are your thoughts on the address? Share them here.

Get ready for another epic fail as Obama doubles down on his unpopular policies. I don’t think he’s capable of understanding why Americans are upset, or of changing his course.

P.S. Previous speeches have made it clear that you can’t believe a word this man says. Look at his promise to telecast negotiations on health reform as just one example.

But he’s a Nobel Peace Prize winner?

Yet another example of failure. Obama was handed the Nobel Peace Prize for nothing at all—thus making both himself and the Nobel Committee into laughingstocks.

State of the Union drinking game -

      1 for mention of Al-Qaeda
      1 for Wall St
      1 for Gitmo being “closed”
      1 for “surge”
      2 for noble peace prize
      2 for Osama Bin Laden
2 for playing the race card while saying he isn’t
      2 for mentioning MLK

Wow one and a half hours of spin interceded by clapping sessions and grins from his supporters. No wonder America is in such a mess. You could if you were a cynic believe he was working to a plan to bring down the US. The first twelve months working on a plan for changes to a health system the envy of many whilst the real unemployment rate hits eighteen percent. Amazing stuff and only in America along with Disneyland.

So it appears Obama has not listened to the MA sentate election.

This really does point to Obama living in a bubble.  His ego doesn’t seem to let reality get in the way of his own sense of self.

I think his euphomism to your dyphomism would be to call living in a buble….the audacity of hope

@annie j, you can’t be serious when you describe the American health system “the envy of many”?

Obama has only just started his presidency and to fix the mistakes of the past is going to take time. I believe people need to stop criticizing the guy and let him do his job – he has made some pretty big promises and they won’t be solved over night (something I don’t believe he ever promised). There are many problems in America that have been there for many years due to presidents of the past and will only get worse before they get better – unfortunately, the past has taken its toll on America and yet they have not learnt from mistakes of the past. I believe Obama has lived these mistakes and is a great candidate to implement the lessons and bring America from ruin to power again.
I think everyone needs to give him more of a chance and let it take its course. Thankfully, he only has small shoes to fill!

anniej… you can’t be serious? You can give the US credit for a lot of things but they send their patients to 3rd World countries to get operations because their system is so broken. Unless you are rich the system is THE worst in the developed world.

Keep your criticisms of the dissapointing president grounded in reality. There is no need to make outlandish statements to criticise the Obama administration.

Obama on his soapbox again, and once again it went this way.
      1. Blame Bush his favourite pastime
      2. Not get involved in health system since they lost in MASS last week that is now on death’s door
      3. Put a clamp on spending no increases, but the past 12 months there was something like a 20% increase, so he only capped the 20% not rolled it back.

Obama has done nothing to fix the USA, after the xmas day bungle where the terriost going to detroit was interrogated for all of 50 mins, then given his mandra rights, shows that Obama is not for the people, and will see him turfed out after 1 term
