Just in case you haven’t realised, Australia has a new prime minister. Very few of us were prepared for this (least of all that bloke called Kevin who’s currently squatting in The Lodge), and it happened so suddenly, Australia still doesn’t know quite what to make of it.

To put it bluntly, by being female, Welsh, and a redhead (or a ranga, if you prefer), Julia Gillard has left us spoilt for choice. So which direction do people take in categorising her?

At this point, many people would venture into Facebook groups or Twitter, but all you’re going to find out is what a few random, vocal people are posting. Like a secret recording device, the true voice of the people is held by Google.

Every term written on the internet, in theory, is picked up by the search giant. And while for the most part it’s quite protective of it’s secrets, it can give us a bit of an insight into what we think about our new PM.

Let’s have a quick look at some Google hit results and see what drifts to the top.

Julia Gillard female - 551,000 hits
Julia Gillard Wales - 193,000 hits
Julia Gillard red - 342,000 hits
Julia Gillard ranga - 9,510 hits
Julia Gillard chick - 54,800 hits
Julia Gillard atheist – 12,700 hits

A startling number of people (including perhaps Kevin Rudd?) were surprised by the fact that Julia Gillard is indeed a female. Just to compare, the general public are much slower to point out (only 195,000 hits) that Kevin Rudd is male (apparently we had that picked).

Many ‘red’ results reveal that most people are resorting to using a hair description as a random adjective. ‘Ranga’ adds an entirely new layer to the mix, and exposes us to the comedy goldmine of Triple M (which gives us a helpful link to ‘More Rangas! Prime Gingerster’s New Cabinet’), Brisbane Times (‘From one carrot top to another: Go ranga’) and even The Punch (simply ‘Return of the ranga’).

It’s worth noting that the last two were written by people who are themselves redheads – yes, maybe we’re starting to enter that kind of society, where it’s only acceptable in publishing for those people to use that word. In fact, if we want to extend it just a bit…

ranga-in-chief Gillard – 4,940 hits

Now there’s something that she should be putting on her business cards.

Wales seems to be quite proud of the fact that Gillard hails from their shores (their vocal pride is understandable – it’s a quiet place, and Doctor Who and Torchwood aren’t currently being filmed). As for the ‘chick’ hits on Google, to be fair, some were just floating detritus from a passing Claire Werbeloff.

Most telling though isn’t what we’re saying, but what we want to read. When you start typing, Google tries to auto-predict what you’re trying to say based on the most popular search terms that people use on it. So if you type in ‘Julia Gillard is’, you’ll get the image above.

So there’s both ends of the spectrum there (although it’s possible for a communist to be hot – Google helped out there as well).

Type in other random letters, just for fun, and let Google show you the most popular terms.

If you actually search for any of those terms, I can’t be held responsible for what you find.

So until Gillard actually makes any kind of splash as PM, reporters, comedians, and indeed the Australian people, will have to rely on a few superficial observations and maybe her past work history to judge her on. Only time will tell. And as Google can show, it could have been much worse…

Old Clive says that there is net censorship already, a brief report on the 7 news in Qld from Morgan polls sais that Julia Gillards honeymoon was over and she was going backwards. There was also a parody of Julia on the internet last week, quite hilarous actually, no amount of searching can resurrect either of these. We must protect the image at all costs even if it means tampering with the freedom of the press and the truth, but if you don’t believe in anything but yourself what is truth anyhow.

Jason Bennett is not living in the 50’s you morons.
He is stating a fact that many of us have principles related to ‘Family ’ Have you heard of that? That is where a person has a partner and they marry and have children so they can educate them to grow up and be good citizens to ensure our country has a promising future. We love the the rewards a family brings to your life, otherwise you could end up a selfish lonely old soul.  I have seen it around me on many occasions.
Some of us still like good values and would like a leader of our country to embrace the same. How does Gillard know about the real struggles of raising a family in 2010.??

Gumboots, you are heading for deep disappointment if you are rooted in outdated “principles”. Julia is single, happily so, works hard and earns her own money, watches over her elderly parents, participates in her sister’s family life, has a (gasp) live-in boyfriend, doesn’t believe in god (double gasp). I bet if she had children, you would be insisting she resign and concentrate on raising them instead of gallivanting around as PM.

Oh, not the “she’s not married and hasn’t got kids so how can she know what it’s like for working families” crap again.  I realise that successive PMs have spent so much time sucking up to families that you now believe the entire Universe revolves around you and your offspring, but there are other people in it too. And believe it or not, they are contributing to society as well, just in a different way.  Please don’t panic, families, I’m sure Julia has no intention of taking away the plasma tv allowance - sorry, I mean Baby Bonus - subsidised child care or the parental leave scheme.  Your cosy little world is still safe even if there is a childless, unmarried woman leading the country.

      Define ‘working family’.
Is it a wife and husband with no kids?
A wife and husband with at least one kid?
A wife and husband with a pet?
Give me a break- most of us work, and my wife and I consider our little home to be that of our family. Even if it is just us and our fish.
I am sick to death of hearing that title- it means absolutely nothing and Labor have just coined it as a nice way of saying ‘battlers’.

    • Roja says:

      03:39pm | 30/06/10

@Ryan - you mean the same support that Tunbull gave Nelson, that Abbott gave Turnbull and that Hockey is currently giving Abbott.  You are a bit naive if you are not aware that in political speak “(insert politician here) has my complete and utter support” means “he’s gone the minute I get my chance”

@gumboot, you’re the moron mate.  Jason was stating “the Australian constitution should forbid any unmarried person from becoming PM”.  So I take that to mean if you are single, gay or childless you cannot become PM.  I know people who had their wife and child killed in a car accident, are you with Jason saying they should be constitutionally banned from being PM? Well, are you?

Then again we shouldn’t be surprised, this is quite normal behavior in communist regimes and we all know that Julia is a commie. I guess Rudd should count himself lucky he didn’t find himself having committed suicide with an AK-47 bullet to the back of the head with the state run newspaper headline being “Rudd commits suicide out of shame for failure to deliver to his comrades - Julia Gillard now our esteemed fearless leader”.

Just a thought but perhaps the real Julia Gillard can be found in the performance of the Labor party over the last 2 years rather than on the internet. Perhaps we should judge people on actions rather than the words that come out of their mouth or that are printed by their adoring media. Gillard and her party has delivered the ETS backflip, a record foreign debt, a burnt surplus, the insulation fiasco, weakening of boarder protection, removal of the tax incentives for retirement savings, the super tax on normal profits, rorting of the school schemes, wasted millions on the grocery choices program, fuelwatch, the national broadband network and the 2020 summit love in, removal of the private health tax rebate, internet censorship, the broken promise of more affordable housing, consecutive budget defecits and a budget which is now under threat from the possibility of yet another backflip. Maybe these facts reflect on the real Gillard better than anything you’d find on the net? Look around Matt, there’s plenty to judge her on.

What is more interesting is what does not get onto the internet - or gets removed from the internet - or, even more interestingly, does not get repeated by the mainstream media after it has been said once.  Where will you find a thoughtful, honest and critical review? Even when her parents spoke about her temper and the way she did not like to be crossed as a child it was quickly removed and not repeated by our uncritical media…talk about a dream stroll to the Lodge!

I think people should have attacked the message instead of the messenger!  I realize that we are living in the 21st century so it doesn’t bother me whether she is Australia’s first red hair, unwed, childless, aethist, not elected but appointed female PM. I hold very strong family values that keeps me grounded and because the Lodge is the “people home” as Kevin Rudd mentioned in his departure I do not like the idea of the nation’s Prime Minister’s boyfriend living in the Lodge.  “Imagine if Abbot was living in the Lodge with his girl friend?

We know she will do anything for the Primeministership so I am keeping my fingers crossed for another Gillard first - a lavish wedding at the Lodge! An invitation to the democratic leaders of the world! Another first, Obama & Michelle’s attendance! Now that will be something for the magazines! It shouldn’t cost the taxpayers anything because the media can pay for the lavish wedding!

Our church (Roman Catholic) forbids people joining them. Mr.Rudd on the other hand is a freemason he left our church hencewhy it is forbidden for any catholic to join the masons. That’s why Mr.Rudd went Anglican to join the freemasons.

      @ joe
Well the straight answer would be no. It doesn’t appear that Julia was ever a member of the communist party.

Julia was a former secretary of something with the dubious name of “socialist forum” back in the 80’s. Check out this article from the sunday herald sun : http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/national/will-julias-past-cause-red-faces/story-e6frf7l6-1111114587478
Some of the policies of the “socialist forum” that she was involved in are disturbing and clearly have an anti american tinge to them for example:
Scrapping the ANZUS treaty (why on earth would they want to weaken our ability to defend ourselves and our allies from any potential communist threat? Perhaps unless you somewhat sympathise with that threat…)
Remove the US spy base at Pine Gap (the nuts probably thought the US was hiding crashed UFO’s there or something)
      Re-introduce death duties (Why?)
Re-distribute wealth from the rich to the poor (well thats standard socialist boloney really)

It is bloody refreshing to have a woman, who is not married and has no children as our Prime Minister.  She has no built in fan club, in the form of a long suffering wife and family,  like all of her predecessors.  I think she impersonates strength, resilience and the confidence to challenge stereotypes.  Julia would not be the first red haired, unmarried and childless woman to have led a country.  For goodness sake, Elizabeth 1 was an extremely successful leader, need I say more!  Just go back a few centuries and you’ll see we are not as progressive as we think!
